I'm new to the sport but I believe a double surgeon's knot is what you should use, just make sure to moisten the line.

would you like a spool of 5X flurocarbon tippet? It doesn't work for me!

Nah. If I feel the need I use 4lb fluorocarbon ice line. I've got a spool kicking around. I don't like the stuff much and never really saw a difference.
If I can't make Cortland, Rio or Maxima work, I doubt it's the leader's fault

I tie a very small barrel swivel to my leader, then the fluorocarbon to the swivel
Works great

Kodiak, that's an interesting option. Can you fish dry flies using this approach? I assume the swivel is SMALL!

In the Pacific Northwest we commonly use this approach when fishing chironomids, not dries.
