Title: First trout on the fly
Post by: zwiggles on Oct 16, 2018, 12:30 PM
So I started to try and learn how to fly fish this year. I hadn’t picked up a fly rod to do anything but trolling in probably 15 years. I have been out a bunch, and learned a lot, but the trout had eluded me. I lost a few earlier in the year following the stocking trucks, but all summer I caught tons of chubs, panfish, and a few small mouth.

I got out recently for the close of general law fishing on streams, and a friend and I decided to go exploring by his house on a stretch of river rather than try spots we had heard about. It was a great success. We found some awesome looking water within walking distance of his place:

And we also caught some trout!

It’s been a fun year of learning. I think by far my favorite part of this type of fishing is going out and exploring the local streams. I have been skunked plenty of times this year, but each time I’ve learned a bit more about fly fishing, and eventually even found some trout!

The biggest benefit to me this year in learning was watching Chris Myers YouTube videos for casting, and pretty much everything fly fishing related. I’d highly recommend checking him out if you’re interested in fly fishing.

Great report Z.   Wish I could still wade the streams and fly fish for brookies?

Congratulations!  You can't beat a spot convenient to a friend's property during the learning phase.

I'm also relatively new to the fly game as well.  Gaining knowledge and experiencing some success is quite rewarding.  Way to get after them.

Housie? Caught some big browns there in the late 70's & early 80's.

I got a nice brown there earlier in the year.  Most of my fly fishing is done on the farmington river.  It's in my back yard.

Congrats, the first season with a fly rod is always interesting lol. There’s always more to learn, and bad habits to unlearn as we go. I’ve been at it for three years now, and still have times I’m just looking blankly into my fly boxes with no idea what to tie on and how to fish it lol.

There isn't much to be confused about when it comes to fly selection. It all comes with experience. Personally, I tie on a big black woolly bugger and that usually does the trick for most places. Pocket water nymphing is different but still, there should only be a handful of flies you are tying on and as long as you are fishing the nymphs/streamers correctly, you will catch stuff.

I should of said what I want to tie on. I usually fish streamers and mini buggers, just I’ve tied so many in so many sizes and colors lol. There are times that doesn’t work, and I’m stubborn and prefer not to nymph when I can avoid it.

true on a black wollybugger  and a handful of flies  but  it isn't experience   that tells you what fly to use  it's  taking a few minutes  first  strange water  I  tip a few rocks and see whats in that stream brown stones ? yellow? black?  walk the banks  are there grasshoppers?   bees flying  ? beetles?  have a rise  look at  color and size mayflies or caddis ....  take your time .... look......be  aware  and it  will all work

nothing more productive than nymphing fast pocket water for trout.  i went in the other direction and only took nymphs for the whole year, i never went back

I was going to say it's one thing to have a preferance on fly choice and or fly fishing style but it's another thing to not fish they way that catches most of the trout.

I used to be in the same camp though.  Didn't like nymphing at all but stuck with it.  Eventually, once I learned how to keep my nymphs near the bottom, I caught a lot more trout.  Now I'm working on learning which hatches and when.  Lots of bugs to remember.  Seamonkey you would probably enjoy a good iso hatch.  You can fish those nymphs fast, stripping line like you would a streamer.

its all in the learning game with nymphs, at first you think was that a strike...and dont react. then its i believe that could have been a strike and dont react. then its that was a strike and you hesitate but then lift the rod.  then the magic comes when everything is a strike and theres no thinking, just setting the hook. i still carry steamers and dries. you can dead drift streamers in fast pocket water ;D

the one thing about nymph fishing is you get zoned out from your surroundings, your world is now the size of a 4 x 6 inch post card with a strike indicator on it

No indicator for this guy....the rest I agree completely.  Best medicine after work.  Daylight savings is messing it all up!

Funny thing about the set the hook part of that parody...one day I was doing that routine jokingly with a friend...I hooked a rainbow...made me laugh.  Never felt the hit.

I call those fish freebies lol. Had that happen once when I was just picking up to do a water haul back upstream. The indictor rig was in slack water and I never saw the take, I lifted the line and a fish started pulling back.  Lately, When I do nymph, it’s usually tight lined with a weighted fly or drop shot style. If I can get away with sight fishing it, all the better, with a bright fly like a egg pattern or small bugger ahead of a nymph. The buggers I tie are usually sz 10-14 and I drift them like nymphs anyway, and swing at the end.
