Title: Tuna/Cod trip
Post by: SHaRPS on Nov 07, 2018, 10:48 AM
Anyone interested in getting a few guys together and hit a charter up for some Tuna or Cod this fall/winter? There are a bunch of options here in RI and a cod trip would be the cheaper of the two. I did a trip on the Seven B's two years ago in January and though the conditions were rough, the cod were everywhere. Saw someone drop one that was at least 25 lbs but thats what they get for dropping the rig down before the captain gave the go ahead.

If there is still time for tuna I might be interested depending on how they are being fished for.

Let me see what I can find. Would you be interested in popping for them?

Yup that's what I'd prefer...poppers or jigs.  I'm sure catching a gbt on bait is awesome but I want to feel a jig or popper get destroyed.

My days are limited (Sundays Mondays) but it is a good time getting a tuna on a popper;

I would not stick my nose up at a Cod trip either....

The head boats out of RI crushed the cod last winter. From talking to one of the captains they are hoping for more of the same this year. I’ve got some money put aside for a couple trips in Jan.

Yep, this was my thought. We should put a date on the calendar.

Sounds like we may have 3 or 4 takers for a cod trip. January was definitely great last year.

Toss out some dates.

I'd go with a bunch of guys from here for cod.  Really need to get a tuna!  Allan that video is awesome. I have a 20k stella for that.  Need a rod.

How many guys can go on the boat? I used to go to Glauster on Yankee fleet for years but have not gone in a while...must get cold in jan.

weekends would be better for me but i could possibly make a weekday work. the only key with the cod fishing is weather windows so it may be hard to set a date this early.

If we were to do a large charter it can hold around 70 people i believe but about 40 is what i topically see. Google frances fleet or the seven Bs. The other option is to get a 6 person charter.

Divided 6 ways, a 6 pack may not be too bad cost wise...

I rather do a 6 pack as well.

I'm fine with a 6 pack. Idk if there are many 6 pack boats that sail for cod then. It can get pretty rough for the small boats

weather permitting and its not been to good lately a 6 pack would work for me

I did a quick look (not very complete) and a 6 pack like Big Fish II will run about $2500 (with tip), that is a little over $400 each... Too much for cod for me. I hope someone can find a better deal or it will be a party boat for me... Maybe there is a mid-size boat that we can take over?

I'm with that.  I could spare 400 but not for cod.

I am itching to get some cod for the freezer and sound like it will be a party boat at this rate... I would rather a charter, but for that range of price, it is tuna time...
