Ours is sitting idle this year Bob.
Way too much going on so Donna and I decided to buy our veggies in bulk in August or so instead.
I'm going to add some manure to it and till it when I get back from the Canada fishing trip.
Then I'm going to close it using heavy gauge black plastic.
This will "cook" it over the summer and through next winter.
This will kill any weed seeds and promote rot to anything left in there.
I killed off all the foliage with the short term roundup that is approved for vegetable gardens.
Did that a month ago.

We talked about the garden over the weekend and how we both miss it.
Too late - the process has started - no turning back now - almost too late to plant.
And planting after the 4th when our time frees up a little is silly.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

I'm learning for sure. The square foot garden takes a lot of management. Just pruned up my tomato plants. I'll be pulling all the radishes later this week and putting in some more carrots. I'll plant more radishes towards fall.

Mac Solarization it better with a  clear plastic.. ;)

Two layers of 2-mil thick clear polyethylene plastic (Maximum soil temp = 128 degrees)

One layer of clear polyethylene (Maximum = 124 degrees)

One layer of black polyethylene (Maximum soil temperature = 118 degrees)

One layer of super-clear 2-mil vinyl (Maximum = 124 degrees)

One layer of black PE under a layer of clear PE (Maximum = 123 degrees)

While the black plastic became much hotter than the clear plastics, it did so by absorbing the sun's energy instead of transmitting it through to the soil.

The reason the super-clear vinyl didn't due any better than the plain polyethylene is that the underside of any plastic touching the soil quickly becomes covered in condensed water droplets, which refract most of the light away from the soil instead of into it. This effect greatly reduces the soil heating capability of these systems.

That's good info.  Learn something every day.  ;D

Your numbers are only good if the plastic is not in contact with the soil.
I use black because I allow it to sag onto the dirt
I also allow the plastic to fill with water
I use black to shut off all photosynthesis.
Also, I get it free from work.

Thanks though.

I'm planted as of last weekend, late but still good. Put a yard of compost, a bail of peet and a yard of screened top soil on her this year. Pics to follow....

I've got to get some pictures of my neighbor's garden to post. It's the most meticulous piece of work I've seen. I thought I was a bit OCD when it comes to is stuff.

Thanks for the info Dom.

I'm going to have some free space in the square foot garden this week when I harvest my radishes. Any suggestions on stuff to plant this time of season? I already have an abundance of tomatoes, cukes, pickles, squash, garlic and beans and carrots.

What could I plant in about 8 squares for fall harvest?

Sounds to me like the only thing missing is cabbage. If you planted them as seed now, they should head out nicely for September.  ;D
