Bottom depth was 30 - 50'. They were all within 4' of bottom around deep weed structure. Is fun catching those big sunnies in 50'. Light biters though.

Good job RG!! Holding off on putting the boat away another week. Maybe go run some streamers quick and shallow for fish moving up with the water cooling off.

Actually, I think his question related to a misconception that the fish were scattered through the water column from 30 - 50 fow. To clarify, I use a perch rig consisting of a barrel swivel, 4-6' leader, 2 - Bob's super secret perch flies, and a sinker heavy enough to drift on bottom. The sinker type will vary from a crimped on bullet nose to a "slinky" to a "bass sinker" to pencil lead.......even the old coat hanger trick if there's too many weeds and a slow drift.

The weight is the key ;D.....and the flies ;)

I don't remember ever catching a sunny in that deep of water. Pretty cool stuff, always thought they were more of a shallow water fish. Do they tend to be larger in the depths?

What a great day! :thumbup_smilie:

25 perch, 30 big sunfish...my perch flies did their job :clapping:

All were in the 30 - 50 fow range. Looks like they're stoking up on shrimp.

Game on!

Thanks a bunch Rg!
They've got to be deadly 6" above a Hali through the ice!
There are scud flies right?  ???

A couple new practice fly's I tied tonight, playing around with learning how to spread the "hairs" out with multiple colorations, and using less thread, and also utilizing a thread tieing technigue learned from U-tube. I forget the name of the tie though! :-\

Looking good FM. A hint for you, A good rule of thumb is to keep the length of the tail about equal to the gap of the hook.

Thanks for the tip RG, makes sense when I consider the presentation of the offering, and making sure the fish takes the hook as well.
I've yet to try any of my fly's, as my fishing time has been spent on the Salmon river, and Shore fishing for walleys lately.
Last year, Walleye1 and I put alot of hours in my jon boat on Pleasent Lake (the lake I grew up on) by now. Which is perfect to fish with the fly rod on for a beginner. Not quite sure why we haven't got back there this summer? Sure was a ton of fun last year. Non stop action with the gills. seeds, crappie, perch and bass. Super easy to limit out daily. Shame on us. :-\
