Made the annual trip to the salmon river. We left Friday evening and arrived at camp around 1030. The owner of the camp informed us that he recently installed a new propane heater but after about an hour of tinkering with it we layered up and slept in the cold. By about 230 I had enough and slept in my truck with the heat running. A couple of space heaters made the rest of the trip manageable but it was all worth it.
Saturday we were up early and ready to fish after getting minimal sleep. We got to the river, which was packed with other anglers, by about 730. I was the first to get on the board with a small, about 15 inch, Atlantic salmon. It had a yellow tag in its dorsal fin so I quickly released it. Come to find out I was supposed to photograph the numbers on the tag and send it in for a potential reward. Live and learn. I followed up that by landing a football of a steelhead which landing was quite the team effort since our net was sitting comfortably in the bed of the truck. In the evening session I was also able to land a coho which was a first for me.
The next two days we explored some tribs to no avail and hooked in a few more fish but never got anymore to hand. It was a fun long weekend but we cut it a day short due to the incoming storm. Always a great time in upstate NY.
