Hi all,
Another new season has arrived. I went out last Sunday {May 4th} and fished from 4:15pm until 8:00pm.
My destination was the Whitesand / Theodore Reservoir.
I was happy to see that it was 100% ice free. :)
I fished for an hour without any luck. I tried casting spoons, jigs and tails, crankbaits and spinners.
Finally I figure that the water is just too cold for any movement so I decide to use a single arm pickerel rig with a circle hook and smelt left in one spot.
This would be the ticket, and not long after, I land my first fish of the new season. ;D

This 3.7lb pike.
Throughout the afternoon I get the odd tap from something small, was it a small walleye or perch? I finally I land one of the culprits.

This guy hangs on to his smelt meal all the way in and only lets go when I grab him.
A little while before I go, I get another, not so gentle tap, and the fight is on again.

This one is 2.7lbs.
Fishing was kind of slow for everyone that day.
At one point there were 6 anglers fishing with me.
An older gentlemen to my right landed 1 pike and the group of 5 lost a few fish.
The guys coming in off the water were reporting 0 to only 1 fish per boat. I though they would have had alot better luck than that. We did just as well off shore. :o
The lady who runs the lake store said that there was a 14 lb pike and a few 2 lb walleye caught right off shore on opening day.
For myself, I was happy with my results considering the conditions that day.
I saw some birdlife, got to wet my line, and avoided the skunk. :)

great pics wolf, love the crayfish one, i had one on a jig through the ice this year whilst going for whitefish and lakers, we were amazed it hung on all the way in too.

Those crayfish are funny...if they are like thier cousins the crabs they got some serious grip, as i found out recently on a marine bio field course when one took a hold of me...they don't like to let go!

Those crayfish are tenacious little guys who can deliver a pretty good pinch if you are not careful. :pinch:

In the end I was able to find 6 pike. 8)

They were 1 lb, 2.3lbs, 2.7lbs, 3.8lbs, 3.9lbs and 4.9lbs / 27 inches.
The 1 lb pike would have gone back but the hook went through the roof of his mouth and into it's eye, blinding it.
I couldn't let the fish go in that condition.
They were hitting yellow single tail mr.twisters and white double leg grubs.
I would have stayed a bit longer but it got really windy with some rain. :P

On Wed June 11th my uncle and I decided to try some evening fishing. It was a dark and windy day but we though we would try it any way. :-\
As we arrived we realized we had the entire shoreline to ourselves.
The only other anglers out there were these 3.

They fished around us in the sheltered part of the lake for most of the evening without much luck.
We had one small shower pass over us but the fish didn't hit untill the last 2 hours of the evening.
During the last hour it started to rain again, but, we were determined to find a few fish, so we stayed and fished from the shelter of the trees.
In the end it turned out not bad, the final results were 3 pike and 1 walleye. :)
I also hooked a polished Len Thompson spoon and a small swimming lure of unknown brand.

The pike were 3.4, 3.7 and 4.6 lbs. The walleye was 1.7 lbs.
All the fish were caught on spoons.
We got one more surprise when we filleted the fish. The 3.7 lb pike,{ 2nd from the top}, that my uncle hooked, had an ultrasonic transmitter embedded in it's ventral surface. :o

This is the first fish my uncle caught with a transmitter.
I have hooked two fish so far with this type of ultrasonic transmitter, one last summer and the other in the winter of 07.
My uncle and I may have to try fishing for the tagged pike in Tobin Lake, would be nice to win a new boat or quad with one. ;D

wow look at all the dead pike...do you eat them? cause in like 4-5 years those babies would be alot more fun to catch and easier to fill your plate..

I have found that the smaller fish are usually not as fishy as a larger one, plus they will have less contaminates if present in the lake.

I hope to try the other Esox species some day, like musky and pickerel.
Hi all,
My latest fishing adventure took me, and my fishing partners, on a day and a half trip to the far South East corner of Sask. and Boundary Reservoir, the only place in Sask. where you can angle for largemouth bass.
I have been meaning to angle for largemouth bass for a long time, so I was eagerly anticipating the trip.
Our first stop was at Rafferty Reservoir.

It was really windy and there were white caps.

The most prominent landmark out there is the coal burning thermal power station, just South of the city of Estevan.

It supplies power to 70% of Sask. and parts of the USA.
Coal is used to power the station and can be found in 4 open pit mines around the area.

They use the dragline method to obtain it.
The cranes they are using in that area look like a small house and rise a very long way into the air.
They are so tall that they have lights on them as a precaution for planes flying over. :o
The wildlife abounds in this area of Sask. with gophers being the most common. Here are a few others I was able to snap a shot of.

The lake itself has neat geological features.
As you travel by boat you can clearly see the coal veins in the steep banks.

While checking out these coal veins I found small shells and prints of shells in the shale layers at the base of the coal, a link to it's prehistoric past. 8)
I was told that this is the hot water outlet.
The power plant takes in lake water and expells the hot water back into the lake.

This warm water is the only reason largemouth bass can survive there.
The reservoir was definitely not a quite place on this trip.

There was a bass tournament going on the day we fished from the boat, so, there was lots of activity.
There were tournament anglers, regular anglers and pleasure boaters all mixed together and going every which way. :wacko:
Were any of you in this bass tournament?
What was the heaviest combined weight, and the biggest bass? ???
The fishing was not bad.
We fished both from shore and from the boat.
Shore fishing was a bit tough due to the very thick weed mattes that extended a good way out from shore. :P
During my time fishing I found walleye, this one the biggest at 2.2 lbs.

This was the only largemouth bass I landed during this trip, but it was a nice one.

It's weight was 4.6lbs and his length was 19 + inches. I think it qualifies as a Sask. Master Angler largemouth bass. ;D
It was close to the provincial record of 24 inches, but, no cigar. :w00t:

Last Sunday {July 6th} I made it out for 2 hours of evening fishing.
My first session went from 5:00pm until 6:00pm.
Not 5 min into the trip and I hook into the big fish of the evening, this nice sized walleye.

Just before I left for a bite to eat, these two seagulls {Gertrude and Heathcliff} showed up looking for hand outs. :laugh:

I returned later on and found the area was already occupied so I opted for another spot on another lake.
I fished the other spot from 9:00pm untill 10:00pm and in that time had a few strikes and this pike.

The walleye went back but the pike stayed for supper. ;)
The fish were really aggressive that evening with hard strikes and really good jumps.
They hit on rubber frogs, spoons and Storm wildeye shads.
The fish were quite shallow that evening.
I found the walleye in only 3-5 feet of clear water, the reason became apparent as I drove home, I could see a storm approaching.
The fish must have been feeding in preparation for the bad weather that was to come. :blink:

Hi all,
My uncle and I hit our usual lake this past Sunday{July 12th} for 2.5 hours in the evening.
It was sure busy at all the local lakes, due to the free fishing weekend, but, we found a nice spot, all to ourselves, at least for a little while.
We tried in a few spots along the beach but no action, just lots of wood and rock. ::)
Finally we found a sandy area and tried it out. My first cast resulted in a pike.
A few min. later some folks, out for the evening, joined us and then another group.
In the end, there was 12 of us fishing in the now, not so secluded, little spot.
My uncle and I still continued to catch fish much to everyone 's surprise. ;D
In the end, we caught and released one little hammer handle and kept 3 larger pike and a walleye for a meal.

My uncle caught the largest and smallest pike and I caught the rest.

The biggest pike was 5.5 lbs and 29 inches the other two were 3.5lbs, 3lbs and the walleye was 1.5lbs.
Spoons and rubber frogs were the ticket again.
I had one more surprise when I filleted the 3.5 lb pike.
In it's stomach was good sized baby American Coot / mudhen.
This is the first time I have seen that. :blink:
If a 3.5 lb pike can eat a larger coot chick, I wonder how big a meal a 35lb or 40 lb pike or musky could eat? ???

Hi all,
My latest fishing adventures took place last week,{July 20th,21st 24th }.
I started off by exploring a lake I have never been to, Lake Kipabiskau, Kip for short.

I was impressed by the view across the lake. :)

The water was very algae filled and reminded me of green felt, even the line in the water left a trail. ::)
The weed growth was also thick from shore, the only way to fish was from a dock.
I fished for about an hour off the dock by the Regional park's main lodge.
In that time I had 2 strikes and one fish.

Later on I made my way towards Barrier Lake. Along the way I came across these big bull elk. :o

My next stop was Barrier Lake.
I also fished there for an hour but no luck, the fish were jumping all around me but were not interested in the lures.
The water was also algae filled, but, not as thick as at Kip.
The next 2 trips found me retuning to my local fishing areas.

I fished from late afternoon until night fall. During that time I caught 7 pike and 10 walleye.
The pike were mostly 1-2 lbs and the walleye 1lb or so.
I did keep 2 fish.

They are not the best looking young ones, but still likeable. :laugh:
The evening was very windy from the North.
I had to take cover from some nasty lightning a few times, but in the end came up with 5 pike and a walleye.
One poor pike roughly 2 lbs had its body shredded from its pelvic fin to the tail on both sides of its body, the rips were very fresh.
That was one big pike, I wish I would have found. :w00t:
In the end I went home with one 2.5 lb pike who took the hook too deep.

Hi all,
I went fishing for an hour and a half this Sat. {Aug.30th}.
This was my first trip in Aug., oh well, better late then never. ::)
I was lucky to find a sheltered area all to myself, for at least for a little while.

I ended the evening with 4 pike, 2 were released and 2 were kept.
The ones that went back were mere hammer handles. They were good fun none the less. :laugh:

Hi all,
It's been a while since I have been fishing.
Aug. 31 was the last time I was out, so on Sat. Oct. 18th I though it was about time. ::)
It was not the best of days with rain and a strong North wind, but, that's the condition I was dealt so I went with it anyways.
In the end I had a couple nibbles, 1 bite off, and 2 pike were landed.
This one struck in the incomming waves.

It was nice to be out again despite the weather. ;D
During my time not fishing, work kept me busy, but along with that, I also took in a bit of waterfowl hunting. :)
It's been a few years since I have been waterfowl hunting but it was good to try it again.

As I spooked him and he ran through a flock of snow geese feeding in the same field.
I wish I would have got a photo of him running and the geese swirling around him. :w00t:

Hi guys,
My uncle and I went fishing for a few hours yesterday afternoon.
The temps were nice for this time of year {+ 8 deg C} and in the first spot we tried no wind at all.
We fished this calm spot for 2 hours with out a nibble.
We then moved to to another spot on the windy side of the lake and in 1.5 hours landed 5 pike, keeping the last 2 of the evening.

Spoons and rubber grubs were the preferred lures.
A few days earlier I made it out for another waterfowl hunt.
The birds have sure vacated this area I was lucky to find a small flock of Canada geese and down one.

If more birds don't move in this goose may be the last one of the season. :-\
Some of the sloughs and dugouts in my this area have a skim of ice on them.
The hard water season is not far away. :tipup:
