Guy in my card league's son makes custom plugs. I play with the guys father who is 93 and is still sharp as ever and makes a few lures here and there. Mike's Custom Plugs is the company for the son. They look pretty impressive. I don't own any but curious if you guys have ever used any of his lures.
Used to fish with him frequently. His dad is the man! The plugs work fine indeed. However the jointed eel is legendary in its own right based of sheer poundage...it took a while to get confident with such a large plug but after time it became a top contender on every trip. I had one that Joe's friend made (to Joe's spec) that caught stripers from Montauk to Maine before we parted ways!
I had both the olive and brown colors. Love the reverse bottle plug. I miss the plug game. I got good at jigging and stuck with it for years...then eels in the surf. I got back to swinging darters last year. That was highly successful. Perhaps I ought to plug again...
Its an easy habit to get into. Back years ago I was skipping the crappy tides and taking 3 hr rides to winchendon to turn plugs with Jimmy. Funny you mention those colors. Ive done surprisingly well with the parrot at night. Granted I'm just tossing super strikes nothing special but they do work.
Ha I just had that done last week. 285-45-22's. Not cheap...I did fish tonight...but it was nymphing for trout followed by a few swings of some big sculpin steamers. Educated a few on the nymphs. Streamers went untouched....water temp a tad cold where I was. Memorial day weekend I kick off the season. Last year was a bust year before I landed a 37lber. Its gone back and forth for years in big fish that weekend. If it gets busy Ill go to cowtown. The internet doesn't know where cowtown is Joe!!!
Jon, what color was yours...I make a jointed bottle plug as well..I only have 2 of those left...Ill post some plug pictures latter, I don't sell because it would cost more than most people are willing to pay ...Liz at surf land asks me every time I see her if I'll sell her plugs to sell.
I think you'd be surprised at how much people would pay for a high quality plug. Mike's father was saying that the more he charges the faster the plugs seem to sell. It is however a huge time investment to produce them at that quality and for retail purposes.
