Title: RAIN AND STRONG NORTH WINDS
Post by: abishop on Mar 27, 2018, 11:49 AM
With April showers and high winds, picking a favorable day 2 fish is tough. Looks like tomorrow it is.

Appleseed. Caught nothing. There were two other people fishing with me in the rain. 0 fish.

MC pier was slow. A few fish were caught. Seems those who caught were there awhile. Brown trout, coho, steelhead and whitefish were all seen - not in any numbers. One whitefish was at least 4 lbs. Nice fish.

With all that being said - I guess I will be back out tomorrow morning. Skein; small shrimp; crawlers; redworms; squid; beemoths. What a list of bait.

Back when i used to coho fish a lot out at Dean Mitchell, Lake Street Pier (heck of a walk) and the port of Indiana I liked using strips of squid.  I ran into a guy out at Lake Street Pier that was doing better than anyone out there so I asked what he was doing different.  Didn't look to me he was doing anything different (slip bobber and squid).  He showed me that above his hook he would overhand tie a piece of 3" fluorescent orange yarn so the tag was equal on both sides and then slide it down to the top of his hook.  From that day I used that technique and when the coho were hitting it would out perform a hook without the yarn.  I was wondering if any has heard or tried this.

It would be a good day to hit Bass Lake at the bait shop for some walleye action.

Went by the pier at MC. Spray was above the catwalk! It will calm down and I will be back out.

Personally, I'd C&R there.  People do eat fish from there.

Here is the fish consumption advisory list.

http://in.gov/isdh/files/General_population_Statewide_Report(2).pdf

For the Maumee (in Allen County), Carp 20"+, river redhorse 14"+ , rock bass 8"+ , shorthead redhorse 16"+ , and walleye under 21" are 1 meal every 2 months.  Walleye over 21" are do not eat.

For the sensitive population:

For the Maumee, the above listed fish are all do not eat.

For all other fish, one meal per month.

I fish Appleseed pretty frequent, I picked up a half bag of trash there  yesterday evening. There are people who eat the fish that come out of appleseed, and say they taste ok. I personally dont after reading the advisories. Most of the fish look ok, but the ones I fried up once didn't smell right.

You can't smell or taste mercury, pcb, lead or any of the other contaminants in fish.

tailout depth yesterday.

The saugeyes we tried from appleseed made the house smell like rotten fish. We had to open the windows up that evening.

Several years back numerous rusted out drums were found in the Maumee in Ft. Wayne. They once contained DDT.  :w00t:

Ground was white in Fort Wayne when the sun went down tonight also, winter just doesn't want to give up.  It's a good thing though, if it was nice out I would have to file for an extension to get my taxes done!!!
