Title: PERCH
Post by: abishop on Jun 04, 2022, 09:21 AM
Heard a story yesterday that someone was getting perch towards Illinois. I know that they should be moving towards our waters. Has anyone heard any stories? I see the doc next week. I sure hope he says, I can go fishing.

I can't wait. Looks like the warm weather will be right. Just hope that we get some south winds for a week. ,Yes, next week I will be putting the mufflers on the boat. IT IS TIME. Haven't been out since September. Keeping my fingers crossed. Been way too long.

Go get 'em Al!
I haven't had the boat out yet either. Taking it a little slow since my heart surgery.  Got her all cleaned up and ready to go. Heading up to the UP July 2nd for two weeks. Everybody has something going on so going by myself. The resort will have the regulars there so will be like homecoming. Going to try E-85 in my truck to ease the pain at the pump. Never used it but is a Flex-fuel GMC and suppose to be able to use it. Knocks the mileage down a couple of mpg but going to give it a go. Going to Ohio on the 22nd for a couple of days  so will give it a trial run.
Have tied up a ton of flies, (like I need more) but never can have too many. ;D

E-85 works great in my silverado, don't use it in the boat they say. Truck will start alittle harder but it'll save money
8 months on 2nd knee replacement so haven't been out since Patoka in May so I'm going to get out, need some perch for the freezer but it'll be nice to get out n stretch lol.

Post by: wallin on Jun 16, 2022, 09:21 AM
I've heard there all good and when the perch are on fire I've caught them with a bare hook as fast as you can get them back in the water, I prefer minnows, flatheads or shinners, shinners are harder to keep alive but many prefer them over the fatheads. This time of year I'm cheap lol. When they get picky and I know there feeding ill do a mixture of different minnows and different size also. Often it will just matter on where you sit your boat down at and following that pod if it's feasting. Hoping for a great year, we or I need it lol. A repaired shoulder, 2 new knees so I need a good year of fishing. So fish on.

Post by: abishop on Jun 26, 2022, 10:31 AM
Caught 2 small ones and picked up a line and found 2 spoons attached, (the catch of the day). We finally located a bite in 22 feet, but the oncoming storms sent me packing. Was nice to get out and a beautiful morning on the water. Started to rain just as soon as we got boat trailered. Not a pod in sight. Fished 28 to 46 feet. Moved and tried closer to shore and found a few. Saw a guy closest to me scoring quite well. Not sure of the size but they were FISH...

Tough day for me today. Seen some people with limits. All I can say is that I WILL NOT be buying fathead minnows again. I do believe if I would have bought shiners we would have caught many more. Something about them black minnows that the perch don't care for. Unless they are in big pods, then it may not make any difference. Just my 2 cents.
Title: Re: PERCH
Post by: wallin on Jul 04, 2022, 03:41 PM

I usually mix the minnows AL, so it's not so expensive, but it's also what your using.

Title: Re: PERCH
Post by: abishop on Jul 18, 2022, 11:38 AM
Still trying to figure that out for myself. Looking at the thermocline, it is all messed up. I was hoping to get out when the waves were at their calmest. But, judging the forecast and winds I fear the perch will be very hard to find. In the past it appeared that 4 days with a good south wind would congregate them in shallower water. But??????? I am hoping August will be golden. It is quite discouraging when they are gone for weeks at a time. Makes the season much shorter. I need to take advantage of my launching pass. LOL (I am looking at Tuesday as well). MAYBE Wish someone would add a current report. Don't think I could handle 2 goose eggs in a row.
Title: Re: PERCH
Post by: Spooled85 on Jul 19, 2022, 06:22 PM
They are there to be had . You just gotta knoe what they like and the temps to look for. You would be suprused how far put theybgo after a blow. Myself i like them 30' or less. And in my experience 3 days of consitant good winds brind them in that range

I would agree on having a decent perch year so far.  I only went out 4 times from Portage but had limits of very nice size perch each time.  Had been fishing just west of the state park beach in about 30' of water.  Inland perch fishing has been excellent at Koontz lake.  Dragging the bottom with perch rigs with red wiggles or small crawlers produces perch up to 12" and a variety of different sized bluegills.  Plenty of fish out there, just finding the time to chase them is another story...  The garden is really starting to produce zucchini and cukes and the tomatoes are right around the corner...  Life is good...

I haven't heard much. Hoping that the winds stay south for a while bringing in the cooler water. This should also bring the gold closer to shore making them easier to get a mess. You can get out and pick up a few here and there but I think they are 50 fow+. I am hoping to get out mid week???????

Nice to get out today. Came home with 9 nice ones with 2 doubles. Fish came in 18 to 22 fow. Talked to a bunch of guys. No one was doing all that. Last night the surface temp was 73, this morning it was 68. Things are looking better. Won't be long now (I hope).

S L O W. only 1 fish. Talked to 3 other boats 2 had 0 and 1 had 1. Fished from 12 to 34 fow. Never marked a perch. Fished the Black Dith mount Baldy area. Maybe the condos did better. Still a nice day to get out.

I do believe that the perch aren't finished for the season. Looking like favorable winds for the next few days. Hoping it is long enough to bring back a few. Got to try on Thursday.
