Just a note as everyone runs their derby's different. We have been doing them for over 40+ yrs as an Optimist club and have have tried different things. The last 5 years we have went to a drawing for prizes. The state park lake we use they are all the same size small. There was no contest as some kids catch more than others.. Maybe because of equipment, skill, just in the right place or they have teaching parents that take them out a lot. We started to drawing ticket number system and it has made our life so much easier. The kids seem to have more fun in just catching and there are no questions from the parents on "did you measure right or the scales are off" It's just the luck of the draw. By the way we give every kids a small red/white bobber when we hand out the ticket for the drawing. So everyone gets something so they don't go away empty handed. Just thoughts on an idea that we do.
