Quabbin Opener 2023
« on: Apr 10, 2023, 01:37 PM »
Looking to be one of the warmest in recent memories!  80 degrees and a fishy wind direction too! Who's fired up to go?

Will see what kind of fun we get into and will report back.  Can remember years where it was sleeting heavily on the opener.  This is better.

8 lakers total.  Nothing picture worthy.  Showed up at 730 and was on the water after maybe 15 minutes in line.  Lakers were scattered like they normally are early season.  Really nice weather.

That's cool! Always great when the weather is nice! Vertical jigging or trolling or both?

All vertical jigging with livescope.  55 fow was the ticket.  Will return once it gets hot out and the lakers are stacked in their summer spots.

Ever catch any up shallow in the cold water? What was the surface water temp?

I've caught them as shallow as 10 FOW in April. I don't have my own boat or fish finder so going deeper wasn't much of an option for me. I've caught them both trolling (aka idling a quabbin rental) spinners/spoons and shore fishing live bait.

49 to 55 where we fished and yes, as shallow as 4-7fow on the opener.  Issue is its hard to het a good bite going shallow vs deeper.  Catch a few in 50 where they are schooled up, some will burp up leftovers and many times a good competitive bite develops.

Cool beans. I mounted a huge one for a former classmate in Indiana that now lives in Alaska. He says on one remote lake (even for Alaska) you can watch 3 or 4 cruise by close to shore in the 40 pound range and cast for them. I forget how big his was, but I think it was in the 40 lb. range. I seen to remember the head was about 12 inches long.

Every fall they shock one on quabbin between 24-27 lbs.  Bailed from work tomorrow to go again.  73 and 6mph winds. Perfect.  Maybe I wont be lazy and take pics.
