Maine Crappie Waters
« on: Jul 09, 2006, 09:14 AM »
Crappie Anglers,
Over the past 3 years I have been involved in trying to get Crappie USA to come to the northeast and host a few crappie tourneys. They have given me every excuse in the world and I am now in touch with the proper authorities to host a few crappie tournaments here in Maine. I'll be doing the leg work to get sponsors and also have input from fellow anglers on set rules for this type of tournament. What I would like is to be able to compell a list of waters that host a decent population of crappie. If you could come up with some waters, I would greatly appreciate it.

John, that's going to be a hard sell for southern Maine. We do have plenty of crappie, but you find the kids love to catch them. After all, a good fishing hole is kept secret for a reason, even with kids. In southern Maine, Sebago has the lagest crappie in the state. You should speak with the towns involved and the state first. My back yard is open to those who pick up after themselves. paul   ;)

Thank you all for your time and help. In do time, I believe that you will see a Crappie tournament here in Maine. Hopefully with help from the state, we can have a whole trail of tournaments.

Bringing this thread back for reference. How many more waters now have them in the past ten years?

Glad they see after ten years there's still no tourneys . Over gratifying invasive pan fish is just encouragement for the state to keep planting them.  8)

I didn't not bring this back up for wanting a tournament. I was wondering how much the bucket bios have spread these, a while back saltyshores brought up the stats of the spreading of bass in Maine, and I was wondering about the same info for this invasion.

The Fish and Wildlife Dept's species plan for Black Crappie notes the following:

     1985 crappie lakes = 13
     2002 crappie lakes = 64
     2017 crappie lakes = ??    ^^^^
Contact Joe Overlock, Fisheries Mgt. Supervisor in Augusta 287-5022 to see if they have a more recent number of crappie lakes and ponds.

A retired Deputy Chief Game Warden reported catching one at Crawford about 15 years ago, but never heard of any others since then
