carp fishing
« on: Mar 11, 2014, 10:15 PM »
I have a pond here that has a lot of carp in it and some pretty nice sized carp in it, my biggest is around 12 pounds but have seen some pushing 20 pounds. I have found that bread works very well a lot of times since people love to feed the ducks that live there. I have started trying dried corn that I have boiled to soften it up a bit and have tried adding color and scent to it but am not sure how to do it right. Also if I should try different boilie flavors or whatnot. After a while the carp get used to the bread having a hook in it and they don't bite it as well. I'm looking for any suggestions to maybe get some of the bigger carp to bite and any other bait options. Thanks  :)
God bless and tight lines!

take a look at the carp fishing section, it's got answers to all of your questions!

for a suggestion though, use a smaller hook. i do well with a size 6 or 8 egg hook and a hair rig.

I've had luck carp fishing by putting a whole night crawler on a #2 hook and casting it out with no sinker.

hair rig and fermented corn. i boil the dry stuff with a chocolate bar and some anise, then let it ripen in a bucket a few days and then use it for a week or so. i also put a small piece of Styrofoam on the hair rig so that the hook hangs down and the corn lifts but stays on the lake bottom. corn in lakes, oatmeal in rivers

I live near the Erie Canal and have trained my 5 kids fishing there for carp. Pizza dough is absolutely the best. Bell sinker on bottom and 2 hooks above have always guaranteed success. We also caught catfish. It is always a lot of fun coaching and watching the kids fight a fish that can test the drag. I am now doing the same with grand children.
I am pointing to a home run for you on my first post.

We let the fish go and my Dad said I had a wish. I wished the fish would live.

as far as bait goes, it helps to know that carp have a bit of a sweet tooth, meaning they're much more likely to go after a sweet, fresh food than a rotten one. rotten baits work, but in my experience nowhere near as well as corn or bread sweetened with vanilla extract.

When it's warmer out, grasshoppers make a good carp snack as well.
