Lake St. Clair Smallmouth
« on: Jun 25, 2008, 11:45 AM »
Had our club tournament on Lake St. Clair this past weekend.  Didn't do so hot on tournament days but caught numbers.  Was catching them well on a shallow rouge jerk bait in the morning then the bite would slow down for me in the afternoon.  Bronzebacker did well, he had many fish in the mid 4s with one or two hitting 5lbs.  Tubes were his go to lure in a few custom made St. Clair colors.  Other club members did well on jerk baits, spinnerbaits, cranks, and tubes.  Largest one day 5 fish sack of the tournament 18.27 lbs (all smallies).

If you guys want to get into some truly amazing smallmouth fishing (along with walleye, pike, musky and perch) close to northern Indiana Lake St. Clair is your ticket.

3lbs 10 oz

Dad with a small jaws

Aftermath of a storm that dropped some rain just as we motored into the ramp area from the main lake.  Boat carpets clean now and bilge works!!!

Sunrise Sunday morning

Another angle of Sunday's sun rise.  The Mayflies were thick!!!

canada was pretty much closed off with a closed season. alot of fish in the 2-8 ft in the rock piles.

To find st clare just go to detroit then head east.....cant miss it!!!

Lake St Clair is located just northeast of Detroit (3.5 hours from Fort Wayne).  St Clair is fed via Lake Huron through the St. Clair River it then flows into Lake St Clair and out to Lake Erie by the Detroit river.  The lake has current in areas and lots of rock, rock piles & weeds which makes it an awesome smallmouth fishery along with perch, walleyes, pike and musky as previously mentioned.

The Canadian season is closed right now so yes we fished the US side.

Mile roads (west side of the lake) are always producers along with the mouth of the Detroit River.

Two great web sites if you want to do some research before you go:

Bronzebacker - Too bad you didn't have your camera in the boat on Friday, you caught some nice picture fish!!!

Actually the Canadian opener was the same weekend you were there.  It opened that Saturday.  The Canadian opener is always the third Saturday in June, and thus the US side opens to catch and keep fishing for bass that same Saturday.  The US side has a catch and release only season that begins April 29th thru the third Saturday in June.  Mid May to mid June offers tremendous SM fishing and 100+ fish days are the norm.  Once the powerboats and tournaments begin the fish will move deeper and you must find the offshore rockpiles, weedbeds or subtle drops in depth to catch the 4-5 lb fish it takes to win a tournament there.  Local and large tournaments there will require 22-26lbs to win.  If you go, be prepared for big water, big waves and equipement requirements that are different than inland lakes.

Here is a 5 lb 14 oz pig from St. Clair this past May.
