whats the pike fishing from shore like this time of year? Looking to camp overnight and catch some pike. Thanks,Chris

The pike are done spawning and should be hungry.  I'd hit the bays/coves on the north side of the lake (warmer) and use either live bait or spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, etc.  Fishing during the warmest parts of the day would probably be best too.

Just a quick update.  The pike are hitting just about anything you care to throw at them, the smallies are hitting white twister tails, and the eyes are very slow, but if your patient, their biting.  not sure if they are still spawning or not, but the males are still milking.  and it seems like they have been for about 2 weeks. The bite is slow, but should pick up some here real soon. Haven't gotten into the pannies or cats since ice out, but i'll get around to them eventually.

Any recent updates on the lake?  Haven't had a chance to get out in several weeks there.  Would imagine things are starting to pick up out there.

Been out a few times since the last posting:
Still haven't found the pannies since ice off, the eyes have become illusive, bass, were up just below the surface, but had a severe case of lock jaw, and the northerns, still hitting just about anything you throw at them.

Thanks for the info, if we could get some consistent, warm weather for a few days things will really take off.

Nice to see you ice shanty guys on here. Seems to be pretty slim pickings on this site.

I will be going to a private lake Sunday morning to try for pike. It is fairly shallow and the moss gets in it later on.

Good luck in the panhandle this weekend.

Fished friday evening and saturday, nothing but pike, 2 Euro's and a male perch.  However the perch was male and milking like there was no tomorrow, so I'm guessing that would be part of the reason.... anybody been catching any walleye or bass on box butte lately?

Fished for a couple hours last night and caught a nice rudd, a bunch of pike and an 11" crappie, all on the north shore in the trees.  We were pulling spinner rigs with crawlers.  They wouldn't touch leeches for some reason.  Headed back tonight, will post another report when we get back.

Waded the flooded trees toward the west end and got into some nice gills.  Caught around 20, all were between 7.75" - 10.5".  Kept 10 for supper tonight!  Water is warming up, and the fish are becoming more active, good time to get out and fish!

10.5" Personal Best Gill

Thanks!

The lake is really warming up now, it was finally pleasant to get my hands wet instead of painfully cold!  Headed there this weekend again.(hopefully)

How was it this weekend? I haven't done a lot of fishing since the ice went out. Did have great luck on pike on Mothers day with my son as we caught about 35 in less than 3 hours on about every kind of lure we threw out.

Going out again on the 17th down by Brady. Guess golf gets in the way of summer fishing.

How about the road between Tryon and Arthur being closed due to the high water between Daiggers and Snyders.

The gills are starting to get a little tight-lipped.  They've got other things on their minds... ;)

The fish are scattered in the trees, mobility is key...I've fished upwards of an hour before finding a pocket of active fish, caught some then had to find another.  The northern seem to be extremely active right now, especially on the west end.  Had several hook ups on good fish, but couldn't bring them in.  Had one straighten the hook on my little beetle spin.

I bet Snyder's pond is looking pretty big right now.  Can Snyders even get in their place?  I fished that pond growing up and there wasn't a lot of room then, in a couple wetter years the lake was up to the road.  I imagine the road is pretty much gone now.

Can you have good Pike fishing from shore pretty consistantly? I really want to head over there and catch my first Pike.  Thanks,Chris

I will be golfing in the early morning and pike fishing later on Saturday. The best of both worlds, will report on the fishing later.

Not sure on Snyders pond but you are probably right, the highway is closed except for local traffic. There is a big pond across the highway just east of their turnoff, you couldn't see the top of the fenceposts on either side. Schick Lake is as full as I have seen it.

Fished at a private lake north of Mullen on Saturday. Got rather breezy with small whitecaps but had pretty good luck. Ended up with our limit of six pike and ten medium sized perch all on artificial lures.

Gills have been somewhat tight-lipped, but should start cooperating soon.  4-6" perch and snot torpedos aplenty.  The occasional smallmouth from the rocks and dam.  A few catfish in the trees.  Saw a nice 9lb cat come out of the trees last week (went back).

Whatever you're targeting, I'd hit the west end in the trees.  Everyone I've talked to who has been catching fish is in the trees.  So much cover right now, it's hard to narrow things down.  The fish are scattered everywhere...  Heading there this weekend and will post a report.

any idea on what the cats are being caught on?
Title: Re: Box Butte

The 9lb one that I saw was caught on a 1/32oz beetle spin.  Probably not a lot of help :)

I would use cut gills or perch for the whiskered ones.  ;)

Fished Sunday at the lake.  Got into some nice gills again, mostly males up to 9.5"

Talked with a few guys who had quite a few white bass, a few nice crappie, and a nice eye.  Not sure where or on what...they weren't talking about that.  Also saw a couple with their limit of northerns.

Bass are starting to hit the topwaters, had one nail my bobber while I was reeling it in.

Randy,

The Bureau of Reclamation web site shows that the water is two feet above the end of the ramp.  I would think you can launch at this level.

Good luck,

Keith

Hey guys I'm heading to box on Saturday, never fished for pike, any pointers, do I need steel leaders or what's a good setup? Any help is appreciated, thanks
Title: Re: Box Butte
Post by: Fishingnerd33 on Apr 07, 2012, 06:30 PM
Spinnerbaits, rapala floaters, husky jerks, big beetle spins, anything flashy will catch northerns up there.  Be prepared to catch a bunch in the 20-24" range.  Green is a good color.  I've had just as much success without a leader as with, I usually have 20-30lb braid and have had maybe two or three bite offs.  Another option to a steel leader is a heavy 20-30 lb fluorocarbon leader.  Good luck, let us know how you do!

It wasn't bad, cat fished all night no luck, that morning hit and between my dad and I we caught about 30 pike and 3 small mouth with biggest was 2.5lb. We waded out in water and just fished with a big red and white daredevil. And also a dozen of carp we snagged. I like that lake. Definately going back for sure! As soon as I figure out this iPhone 4 I'll post some of the pics!

just an update on water conditions,  deepest spot I could find yesterday was 22 ft,  it looks like theres 8-9 ft before the outlet grate will be at the surface level, and they are letting water out like mad right now.   the tree canopy to Hunter's point access is not only out of the water, but theres about 4 foot of land visible in front of the trees, the House that is west of the West is a mud flat now, and the fish dont seem to be biting.......
