A Little Mountain Climbing . . . and then on to Glory Rock
Today, 02:27 PM
I fished the North Hoosic in North Adams from 9 to 10:30 AM this morning.

The sky was overcast and the weather was not terribly warm (maybe 80 degrees) but it was oppressively humid.

I started by the roll dam half way between the Beaver Mill apartments and the Eclipse Mill dam.

The roll dam rises about 6 or 7 feet above the water in a rounded 60 degree angle.

There is a horizontal seam or crack in the concrete that stretches across the length of the dam about 10" above the water, so, when the water is relatively low, you can clamber out to near the middle of the dam where most of the water flows over the top and cast toward the flow. But it's tricky because the concrete is damp, slippery and pitched at an angle, so it's a little bit like working along an edge while mountaineering.

I tried the mountain climbing experience today (pity I didn't have a pick ax) and managed to land a 12" rainbow.

Then I waded downstream toward Glory Rock (which is a cliff on the western shore of the river that currently has 2 American flags hanging from dead trees near the top) and caught another 12" rainbow along the way.

At Glory Rock itself, I reeled in two more rainbows (one 12" and one 13") and on the way back toward the roll dam caught one last 13" rainbow.

Your ability to catch bows throughout the heat if summer is unmatched.

Agreed.  Usually the western mass streams and rivers that I fish are only fishable in the first and last few hours of light during this time of year.  Anything outside of that is a waste of time.  Nice work!
