Title: Stripers some to small and one to Big!
Post by: fish wayniac on Aug 08, 2020, 01:25 PM
I met Sean at the coast this morning fishing the outgoing to low tide. We managed to jig up a few pollack and 3 mackerel that have been hard to find. I landed 3 between 20” to 26” . Sean caught his PB a 44” cow with a guessed weight of 30- 35 LBS . Pretty cool seeing a fish that size up close and then release it.

Skill 🤔
He played it for 10-15 minutes and timed a swell to land it . Lucky it was low tide so we could stand in the surf and get grip from the barnacles.

Nice stripers again, Wayne.  Congrats to Sean on his monster.  Getting it in those precarious drop-off conditions adds to the accomplishment.

Yes the  big one was caught on a Mackerel. I was lucky to catch 3 on one cast. 2 of mine were caught on live pollack .

What a beast! I can’t imagine fighting a fish for that long, then again I don’t venture out of freshwater (until recently).

It’s a little tough sending that hog back when last season it’s a keeper. I get protecting the species so it was ok. That’s the biggest one that I have seen so far. It’s tough not getting our baits smashed by the shorts.

Wayne make no bones about this..the only species that recreational guys are saving (short term) is the commercial striper species.  They lobbied hard to keep their quota high while more pressure to preserve the species was put on recreational anglers.  Big time mechanics at play...also why you'll never get to go to a ASMFC meeting that isn't during the week while everyone is working.

If said this before.. if you go do what you are doing now, at night, you will catch bigger bass.  They big girls will come it a lot closer to shore under the cover of darkness.  Right into really shallow water.

Mass has a slot now as does CT.  1 bass per day between 28-35".  That's brand new for this year.

Yes I think so.

12 stripers is nothing to sneeze at Joe.  I'm going to start chucking large flies for them soon.

I had about 15 minutes this morning after dropping my better half off at work before I needed to head to work myself, so I threw some big topwaters (IMA Big Stik 175, if I would have had more time I would have tied on a Megadog or the big Daddy Mac Bomb for a bit) in the back cove this morning (high tide always treats me decently there). 4 blowups, hooked 1 that was decent but lost him when i slipped on the rock I was standing on and put slack in the line.

I hear they are catching bigger Kings in Ontario.   Kings 34" long are not to laugh at.  to bad to have to play with those small Strippers.

This season I have caught lots of 18”-26” Stripers . Jigging  bait from shore has been tough at times catching . As soon as you put a live Mac or mostly pollack you get bites. Then it’s back to the jig🤦‍♂️👎.

The slot limit is not 28" to 35"]  It's less than 35".   Why didn't they just make it 28-35????

Hi Joe, I went out to a Ledge this morning. I was able to catch 6 pollack for bait but couldn’t reach the mackerel from shore.I  Had 6 bites and landed 4 Stripers. No keepers this outing they were 22”-25”. The view and the sunrise was nice.

Great pictures. I don't have a camera and couldn't figure how to post them if I did. Fish are around but maybe not for long in my area. Saw about a 30 incher caught right by the dock where I launch.

One day you'll eventually use eels....then hopefully eels at night...then you'll be telling us about the 40lbers your landing!

I think you'll really enjoy using them.  Simple fishing cast out, reel in slowly.  If you are patient I'd take some time to rig eels too.  They keep well in kosher salt and can be fished aggressively like a plug.  Its absolutely amazing how hard stripers will smash them.

16 isn't something to scoff at, and the small ones always give me so much more grief (I can't tell you the number of times the 15-20" have got me on my own trebles. Thankfully, and knock on wood, nothing past the barb. Yet). Great job dude. Chunking or Lures (if you don't mind me asking)?

I had 1 this morning in 12 minutes, 2 more blow ups. Got it on "last cast" (my alarm was going off to head home for work). About 18-19 inches, caught on this (in the Trout color): https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Ima_Big_Stik_175_Walking_Bait/descpage-IMABGST.html

That was Thursday am for me.  Fly fishing.  Crazy how fast work time comes when you fish in the am.

Decent last night in South Portland. 10+ in 2 hours on the 140 size husky jerk (which I specifically buy for stripers and pike. If a jerkbait gets destroyed or lost or toothed, I'd rather it be $6 instead of $15-$27). Biggest around 22", most were that 15" class. 1-4' of water, just thick with Silversides. Busting all over the place but couldn't get any on top.

I fished the coast the last 2 mornings at dead low tide. On the first cast with the sabiki I catch a pollack. Put him out and hooked up with a fat 26”. I had my bait mugged a few times then caught a 22”.
I was back at it this AM I time for a beautiful sunrise. The first fish on took my bait and went for a scream run. I could tell this was a hog. I was able to slow him up but it started to go toward the rocks. I tried to turn it but pulled the hook. I jigged up a big pollack so I was back in the game. I got 2 more landed a 24” and a 27”. Not bad for October.
