Yeah I've never really fished the fall run.  I might have to give it a go this year.  I usually start focusing my efforts on trout and steelhead until the ice starts to form.  Maybe this is the year I make it happen.

Fall run is what you make of it.  It used to be pretty good in the canal, fairly consistant, but now with less fish that's changed.  Been thinking about Montauk this year as there's plenty of time left.  Have to know how to swim there.  Jersey in December is good too for those of you interested in extending your surf season.

I fished at a Montauk State Park in Missouri (obviously a different Montauk) about 20 years ago.

Pretty good fishing for stocked rainbows as I recall. :)

Pick a weekend for Montauk.  I'll be up in Pulaski middle of November but I'm game for a road trip this month (coming from the guy who just drove back from Cleveland on Sunday ::)).  Oak Orchard fishing the days prior to the wedding in Cleveland was uneventful, foul hooked salmon that we couldn't land, landed a decent smallie and then broke my TFO TiCRX at first light on the second day.  Luckily I brought the spinning gear which my girlfriend was overjoyed to use (8wt with overhanging trees and shrubs was a disaster).  We drifted egg sacks and flies after that without much luck.  Would have loved to see how the Saragusa would hold up to a salmon.  I also explored some smaller tribs, but even with the rain they received the prior night and morning, the water seemed too low for any fish to be moving up.  I will def be back at a later date.  The area is much less crowded than Pulaski and seemed a little easier to get a decent drift with the size of the river and flow.

Heading up to the salmon river for the 10-14th hopefully the mother load that is currently at the mouth moves in.

You are in for it. The canal is a walk in the park comparatively.  I have the drytop I used when I first visited "the end".  You can use it.  My new stormr came in today.

Use to do the Outer Banks trip every year to Hatteras. Stayed in Avon. That was always fun to extend the surf season. Been about 5 or 6 years now since Iv'e been.

9pm Saturday to 1pm Sunday...Garufi and I fished the canal and Rhode Island.  Caught a couple shorts at the canal.  Missed 2 large bass.  Quiet as far as crowds go.  Very limited surface activity so we went to Westerly.

Tired...we arrived to outgoing tide...which is favorable.  The breach was too busy to fish effectively for bass. Too many albie chasers.  We went to the rocks and got got a few shorts.  I missed an albie.

Reminded me I love the surf.  Cant crowd there!  Your rock is your rock until you cough it up.  I tend to get the best rocks!

Nice work Jon.  I stayed local to pike and trout fish.  Saturday I got skunked pike fishing but missed a ton that just couldn't connect on the frog.  My buddy landed 3 smaller pike and had one break him off.  Sunday evening I picked up a fat 15 inch rainbow in the east branch of the westfield and another smaller one in the main branch while we were driving home.

Pat I was going to start on that fall run myself but the boat had other ideas.  I replaced all the fuel lines to the carbs and must have them gummed up good.  Primes up and hold prime but not getting fuel.  Can hear the bowls fill though.  I like to start chasing pike now until ice up so I need to resolve the carb issues.

Nice.  I haven't eaten one in quite a while. Once I started eating blackfish never turned back.

I harvested my first one this year in a long while, even had to go buy a fillet knife because I mostly catch and release.  I think the last time that I did I had chartered a boat so I had kind of paid for the rewards.

Post by: lowaccord66 on Oct 09, 2018, 10:18 AM
For me it's usually logistics that prevents me from harvesting.  I dont keep them unless it's right before I am finished fishing.  Not to mention the collapse of that fishery is going to happen again.

If you are looking for blackfish action, this is the best year I have ever seen. I went through 5 gallons of crabs bite after bite, fish after fish. Ended up culling a few and took our limit again. Then followed up with over 100lbs of hen of the woods which a buddy and I split. Time to lean my focus on those flying and walking critters in the woods.

How far out do you need to go to get to them?  Are there grounds that I could get to in my yak?

You could get them from shore if you wanted and yes, a kayak would also get you to other locations. You would need a anchor

What depth are we talking?  I don't know if I've got an anchor rope that long.  I can pedal in place too so i can hold my position but would like to know the general depth to target.  PM me if you prefer.  I'm strongly debating getting up early Saturday and hitting the CT/RI shore to see if I can find some.

Nothing worse.  There's been a bunch of bass out that way, size varies.  I'm excited for the weekend. Hopefully the canal is kind so Sharps and I can murder a few bass Sunday am.

I never did end up fishing the Canal Jon. I know you had to take off early so I ended up hitting a patch of forest and found golden chanterelles and hedgehog mushrooms. However, as I mentioned I had a great experience out on the cape. Trout, Bass, sea run white perch, bluefish, striped bass and even lost a albie. cannot complain.

I didnt either.  I left the hotel at 430 and made it to westerly by 630am.  Tim and I grabbed a critical rock point and hammered over 30 bass in a couple hours.  All on poppers!

...and I got 1 bass over 40" sat am at a spot we know and love.

I got one decent fish last Saturday....from there all shorts.  Aggressive ones though.  Right in the wash.

It's been nice to get back into the surf.  While there's been people fishing crowding isnt an issue like the canal.
