New York's Steelhead Record Falls!!
« on: Aug 19, 2004, 05:12 PM »
While fishing in the Oak Orchard area of Lake Ontario yesterday I heard mention of a new record Steelhead from several of the charter captains.  A little searching turned up a pic.  31.4 lbs. caught out of Olcott, NY is the only info I have.  One heck of a nice fish!!  Congrats to the lucky angler!!

May your doorknobs smell of fish!!

LOL!  I wish!  My best from yesterday was barely half that size.   Still a nice one.  It was really rough water but we managed a few pics.  I'll get them up soon.

Thanks man!!  Here is an article I found in reference to the record catch:

1.    Lake Ontario And Tributaries -It's a new state record steelhead! That's the official
word after the 31 pound, three ounce fish caught by Rob Wilson of Tallmadge, Ohio
was inspected by state DEC Fisheries Biologist Mike Wilkinson. Wilson caught
the new record last Saturday while trolling 12-plus miles north of Olcott. His
father, Robert, was using a new program using small dipsy divers off the
downriggers to get their baits away from the boat. The bait he was using was a
Pirate 55 watermelon spoon with gold fleck, stacked on the rigger 21 feet below
the surface. The initial hit by the fish nearly spooled their Daiwa 47LC,
taking the line out nearly 300 yards. Twenty minutes later, they had the fish to
the boat. At first, they thought it was a salmon. Six hours later, when they
weighed their fish in, it sat at 31 pounds, 4 ounces. It lost an ounce by the
time a DEC witness verified the weight. The fish was 39 inches long and had a
girth of 26 inches. Three distinct areas seemed to hold fish the past week. At
least, when the weather cooperates enough that it allows for a program
presentation to be put together. The first area is for staging fish in close, 90 to
120 feet of water. Either side of Olcott seemed to be one of the better spots we
heard about, especially off the microwave tower. Cutbait, spin doctors and
flies, spoons and j-plugs have all been showing up in angling arsenals for the
near shore fishing. Earlier in the week, the mid-water was producing some nice
fish, too. The 26 to 28 north line of the GPS was holding a mix of steelhead
and salmon with spin doctors and flies working very well in white or green
variations. The most consistent fishing, the area where the big steelhead came
from, was the 32 to the 33 line north of Wilson and Olcott. Spoons and spin
doctors with flies were the top two baits being used. It was a YOB Stinger that won
the Don Johannes Memorial Fishing Tournament out of Wilson last Saturday for
the Hot Line boat of Mark Vogt and Karen Busch of Olcott. Their 26 pound,
eight ounce king was top dog in the event. The LOC Derby starts today, giving
local anglers the option of three different derbies this weekend. In the Orleans
County Derby, which ends on Sunday, the leading fish is a 28 pound, 14 ounce
king reeled in by Bruce Cole and caught off Point Breeze. Top rainbow and brown
are a couple of Olcott fish. Jason Monkelbaan is leading the rainbow division
with a 17 pound five ounce steelhead; Eric Bickel is top brownie with a 16
pound fish. Top lake trout is a 23 pound, four ounce fish caught by Walt Halling
off Point Breeze. The $1,000 A Day Derby continues through August 31st. Don't
forget the Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey is coming up September 18-26.
