People leaving here.
Going over to "THAT" place.
Wondering which 40 year old technology flasher unit is better for it.
Hand crank, battery, gas, or propane to get thru it.
How small can we make the jigs this year.
Do I need a filter on my Mr. Buddy.
How thick before it's safe
How many vehicles test thier insurance policy to see if covers underwater recovery
Cleats , studs, or screws in the boots
Which float suit for the prom.
wheeler or sled.

i agree. what's with people wanting to discuss ice fishing and related gear during ice fishing season?! insanity i tells ya!!! i'll stay here with the same 5 users discussing thanksgiving, cooking and mushroom hunting...
the cold must be tough to handle when you get old?
-
for 50 years used a 5 gal. bucket, hand lining with 2 jigging rods with plastic spools and 4 # test line to jig up lots of perch using mousies, spikes and minnows, 5 inch hand auger and scoop. You don't need all that other crap.......JUST ICE! Why change now?
-
Could always stay here and talk about boats , baits , rods , reels, line , electric motors , graphs , talk about how rough the lake is , and don’t forget how much fun it is to talk about how much weight we put on while staring out the window waiting for the spring birds to appear 😃 👍

Calm down, Mac! It's early, still only deer season. We won't see safe ice till mid January.Put yer waders on, order some more stuff for yer boat, sip some tequila, and wrap a few rods........only 149 days till May 1.

Yup Greg
;)
Heading out with Jeff Saturday morning on the lower Niagara for some steelhead and browns. We chartered with a friend of his. We have gone with Matt many times over the past 3-4yrs. He works hard and we always catch a buncha fish.
Waiting for my minn Kota and still negotiating with the guy on the lithium iron battery for it. We need to order that next month to insure we have it in time for spring browns in Olcott on Lake O.
So you have me pegged Greg.
You know me pretty well my friend.
Might even drill a few holes with Jeff this winter. We will see how the neuropathy in the feet are however.
I’m off to Phoenix, NY right now for meetings.
Happy Thursday ladies.

No Florida this year? Oh yeah I forgot about the Covid thing.

Still no Ulterra? Want me to hook you up with my guy? LOL

Glad I haven't....and Mac we all have our things...let the ice maniacs be. Besides you wouldn't know what they were chatting about if you didn't peek!

Na!
Thanks Geoff!
Minn Kota has everything out of stock these days because of covid and raw materials, etc
Not earth shattering as I don’t need it till spring so it delays paying for it.

I think I'm jumping ship and switching to the garmin unit next year. Everything I've read or watched about it seems to show its way more accurate.

yup been there! pond was iced over yesterday! boat still ready to go till ramps are froze up to thick to break.
see ya there mac

i have the portable garmin striker setup and I love it. use it all open water long on my boat and kayak and then switch to ice. has waypoint capability, A-scope zoom(which also lets you know how big the circumference of your view is on bottom of lake) for verticle jigging and even has a flasher mode for those who like it. I myself use the traditional on 77hz turned on to high scroll with the A-scope on. gives me temp, time, depth, and everything I need

Garmin only makes one style trolling motor, with a 50" and 57" shaft.
I need at least a 72" shaft.
And the style of the Garmin Force won't fill the bill on my boat at all.

I wanted a Garmin trolling motor so bad it wasn't funny. Mostly because I want the Garmin electronics. They are missing a huge part of the market with only making deck mount, bass boat trolling motors. I mean, yes, the bass guys are the biggest market, I get it, but there are guys in deep V's that would probably buy a Garmin if they made something for them. The good news is I couldn't really be any happier with my Ulterra.

I agree on the Garmin comments Geoff
Really glad you are happy with that Ulterra.
Cause mine came in today and I just picked it up. That this really weighs a ton!!
Now it will sit in my garage till spring when I drag the boat out of storage.

lol
It's an I/O.
It takes way too much to re-winterize it.
Tempting though.
I'll have it back out early for spring browns in Olcott.
All depends on how long winter holds on.
We'll see.
Jeff and I had a charter scheduled for the lower river tomorrow.
The captain called it off due to muddy water.
The recent rains, snow and yhigh winds have made the lower river a real messy chocolate milk.
We will reschedule with him for after the holidays.

I have an extremely accurate depth finder. No batteries, no beeping, no alarms, no flashing lights no wires, compact, portable and its guaranteed for life.....unless I lose it.

Yeah, it's a big box, huh? I thought it would fit in the back of my truck under the toneau, worst case kitty corner, but nope, she had to ride home sticking out the back. The 36v motors are wicked heavy too, easily 3 times as heavy as my 12v Powerdrive.

Yup - same here.
And it was raining so the box got wet.

Yup - one heavy mofo for sure.

Due to covid I'm not trolling with a buddy on Champlain this year, so I'm focused on finding some local steelhead before the creeks freeze which could be by Christmas, but will be in the 40's this weekend.
If I was really ambitious I could cast for lakers from shore in many spots on Lake Champlain right now....but I would have company. I think everyone who would normally travel to NY to fish for steelhead and salmon stuck around this year.

I was going to head east for a couple of weeks this coming summer but I'll probably hold off for another year. Even with the vaccine it's going to take a little longer to get back to normal especially if enough people refuse to get the vaccine. I just hope enough people do so we can get back to normal!

I agree.
I don't think we will be out of the woods until mid-late summer or even later.
I think we are looking at bad juju for the next 8-9 months.
Hunker down and stay safe guys.
And protect your family.

still living life free here. you take the scamdemic ill take living life. im allergic to sheep.
No body is telling anyone how to live , just do what you feel is right no more or less
Personally I’m a little cautious for my wife last time she got the H1N1 flu she almost died , as she has a weakened immune system do to rare form of cancer , and I still luv my better half , guess that’s a sin

I'm careful too. My father going on 85 was hospitalized with the common flu a couple of years ago. Covid would probably kill him. My mother two years younger is recovering from a heart attack. She had 95 percent blockage in both arteries to her heart. Thy live in an apartment above garage. We share meals.

Taxid, thoughts are with your Mom.
Lowaccord, good to see you are still getting out for those "brown" fish.
Got the hunting stuff put away yesterday. 2 years in a row not seeing a buck....h2l

temps rising all week! perch will be caught from the boat
I find myself walking on iffy late ice less and less and breaking out the boat by early March and hitting finger lakes.
If I can talk my better half into the garage I need it may turn into a year round deal with the number of warm spells we seem to have more and more.
Self draining cockpits and outboards are really nice.
-
I think your right Cully

Someone said thy weren't trolling due to Covid?
I should have just said he doesn't want to hang out with me because I smell. Or maybe I poked fun at him this summer since he shaved his mustache off to wear a mask. I sent him a fake handlebar one ;D.

Ive been eyeballing the canal below the Macedon Lock. Water is up and there’s some possibilities for ice fishing there. West of the lock the water is down to less than a foot. Doesn’t bode well for next year’s fishing in that section.

Never upgraded to the ice ducer just move it around in the hole until view of jigging is right. doesnt take much.

IS THERE ANY SAFE ICE YET???? Asking for a friend!!!😁

The ice in the cocktail I’m sipping is safe enough for me,

Thanks! I thought about picking up an extra mount, power cable, and ice ducer to use it on the ice but the components cost near as much as the ice bundle. Really like the hydrographic mapping feature with the GPS. Would be handy on the small waters I fish. Will probably just keep using my Vex Fl18 but Mac says it's old technology, need to upgrade......

Winter is coming! At last report a friend has posted pictures of 16 inches of snow in northeastern Michigan. And I don't think that's lake effect as it's barely freezing at 32 F on the east coast of the Michigan.

we have a lake around 9,000 feet here in wyoming that had 18 inches of ice 2 weeks ago. Sadly we have almost no snow.

When the wind is blowing and my hands are wet they feel colder.... 8)

Does wind chill make the lake freeze faster or slower :-\ :-\ :o
Wind that is colder than 32F helps promote conduction and strip the heat from the water.
In reality, water doesn't "technically" get colder.
It gets less warm. :o
Cooling of the water is the process of removing the heat in it.
So yes, wind does help water freeze quicker.
(If the wind is below 32F)
Just like when you blow on your soup to cool it.

It was an example of another useless question asked over and over again on the other site- Which drill works best, which freefall reel is best or do any really freefall with a .000001 gram jig and a single half spike etc..
ice will be thick enough when I'm satisfied it is for me and only me, The drill in my hand ,if it works, will be the best drill that day and if all else fails I'll put the hand auger part back on and sweat a little. One of my reels will work well enough and I can pull line off by hand if need be to catch a fish usually under a pound. Always fun to see the rehashed beat dog post
-
Mac, You weren’t around many many years ago on IS when there was an ongoing blather about wind chill freezing water faster. It was absolutely hilarious. One guy argued incessantly that if the temperature was 35 and the wind chill was 25, water would freeze faster.
It went on for weeks and all the smart asses like me had a ball with it.
We even got into ...if two cars are traveling different directions, one into the wind and one with the wind, which windshield would freeze faster. So much fun!
Just took a walk by the canal.....it thawed and it’s still drained down to a trickle west of Macedon lock.
Rg
-
Wind chill has already came up 😃
Personally doesn’t matter when my comfort zone has been met I’m going , , should be out now but need to catch up a couple things , 🎣🕳
-
If you were to take two dixie cups and fill one with cold water and one with hot water, then put them into the freezer, which one would freeze first?
-
Hit the Other sites NY page and see the new guy just asked "What's the best drill?"
It's all in fun but wow nobody likes to search for anything or gain personal experience by trying something.
Buddy sent me a slob eye through the ice couple days ago so there's ice someplace in NY. I didn't bother asking where or how thick just "nice eye"
-

I prefer the “which shanty should I buy” question over “what’s the best drill”

Archbishop and Friends was awesome
Scott gave us that place and warned us.
(Many times he warned us - lol)
Then, when we witnessed a few things, and even had the proof, everything got a wee bit out of hand.
:w00t: :rotflol:
So we started DSO
A long time ago.
I’m feeling much better now.

Me too, Garmin Striker4 now all I use for ice fishing, old Marcum VX-1P gathers dust as my backup or let someone borrow it when I have others out with me.
Great device. Even purchased to ice transducer with does everything but give water temp the stock 'ducer it comes with does.
Have set it up foe summer use on my boat with a PVC rig to hold the 'ducer in the water off side of boat so we have 1 up front & my fixed one in back.
Works great in my canoe too.
