To catch, native brook trout. Not the smartest or biggest fish but just 'cause I've been catching them since I was a kid in mostly remote out of the way places.

To eat, yellow perch.

I love to fish for anything that is willing to bite. ;D But I think my favorate would have to be the good old Northern Pike {Water Wolf}.
Those toothy critters are usually the most active fish of the year, almost always ready for a good fight, widely distributed, and the ultimate predator in most lakes they swim. :flex:  :w00t:

Have to say after hooking into a few Silver Salmon that I am definitely hooked on them.     If I go back up to AK I want to catch some in their native environment.    Never had anything pull quite like that before, or send a large reels drag screaming.
I'm a big fan of light tackle panfish, you hook a good one and they give ya a run for your money.
Bass and pickerel are a blast on top waters
Pike are fun catching on daredevils.

I cant choose.   SO I love catching them all

I am on the eternal search for elusive Slab Crappie. I have been hooked on them since I was a kid. We used to go up to Black Lake, NY every year in the 1980's for two weeks in early June. I think I must have caught 10,000 crappies in that lake over the duration of my life. Great memories :) :) :) :) :) :)

I like fishing for Brooktrout mostly. I ice fish more than open water fish - which still isn't often enough. A big togue thru the ice is hard to beat though.

I usually enjoy catching fresh chums more because fresh kodiak chums are hard to come by but there is no denying that for brute power no north american salmonid can come close to a big fresh king. Notice the fresh from the saltchuck part of the above quote. This is important because the difference between a fresh king and a rotten one is night and day. Although catching a turned king is impressive you have not truly experienced a king salmon until you have caught a chromer!
I've never been to heaven, but i have fished  in  Alaska.
