Title: tautog
Post by: Williesnag on Apr 03, 2013, 06:36 PM
Hi all just wondering if any one here has ever fished for or caught tautog/blackfish up here in maine.  They are said to be found as far north as nova scotia.  Ive cought them in Conn., NY, DEL., MD>., VA., NC., but caint find any info on them being up here.  Our coast line is perfect habitat (cold water and rocky cover).  They are fun to catch and very good eating.

I have asked around as well because I have friends in RI and MA that fish for them all the time and do pretty well seems like they have most of the same species of fish as we do but I have never heard of anyone fishing for them or catching them in Maine, seems like Southern ME at least should have them..

i would not suggest this is the reason or the answer but ocean water south of cape cod and north of cape cod are two different beasts.  I wouldn't try to use any saltwater skills I gained south of the cape up here.  the water is always 10 degrees colder and when talking about the difference between 60 and 70 it is a huge difference. I dont see any trends the same here as there

They are on the north shore of MA so I would assume they would be around. I also think I saw a diving video where they showed a picture of what looked like one at Nubble light in York. Don't know if there are any numbers or not.

Never fished for them with rod and reel but have caught them in my lobster traps. Usually late July and August. Last summer we were catching some kind of a fish that was flat as a pancake and had teeth like a piranha. I can't remember it's name but it's not native to ME. Stripers, they are all but extinct up on this end of the state. It seems to me when we started catching cunners in our traps we would pick up a blackfish or two.

I have seen one or two caught near rocky ledges in the wells beach area while searching for Macs. All incidental though and not very common.

I think I have a few tautog rigs in my tackle box from growing up.  I have never used them but they are a three way swivel with a snap to add a sinker and two 1.5' leaders with an orange bead then a hook around size 1 or so on each.
I would post a pic but they are rusted and not worth looking at but if you google "tautog rig" you will find some variations.

that sounds like a summer flounder or fluke as they are called cought lots of them down south but also found as far north as Maine

I did not have a rod with me (isn't that always the way!) but years ago I watch for a while a huge Tautog working the rocks on the East side of Hermit Island, so yes they are in Maine... I would talk with any divers that you know, they can tell you were they have been seeing them.
As to Fluke, I have catch them on the Maine / NH line...
Good Luck!

i fish for tautog all the time. mostly ri and mass but when we get unusually warm ocean temps you see them alot up in nh maine. they hang around rocky shore eating mussels and crustaceans. if you are planning on going for them the fall would be the best time to try when the maine water temps are at there highest. hope this helps.

We use to catch Cunners off the rocks at two lights state park in the forties and fifties every week end. used clams for bait . seems they were all eight to twelve inches long .
