Hopefully it's now illegal as VHS has been found in Pacific Herring and freezing doesn't necessarily kill the virus according to an expert on VHS at a recent fish pathology workshop I attended at Purdue University.
Although the VHS in the Pacific is a different isolate it would seem prudent to stop using Pacific Herring as after all VHS started in Europe by feeding trout herring products from the ocean. My state of Indiana is not doing anything about it and continues to allow wild untested fish to be planted into private waters which ultimately connect to other public waters. I guess the thinking down here is they won't do anything until it shows up. Not prudent IMHO.
