This is just to fun to look at your lures. Very creative work.  And very unique too. I do know first hand they work thats for sure. One of our best seasons so far through the ice. But can not wait till spring fishing to try them out too.

Well still working at it and getting a little better. These two are perch skins. Even though they are used more for Icefishing they will get a big workout this summer under the boat.

And if you take fronthook away you can easily use like basicjigs at summer or take backbib away and put rubbertail.

I have under work couple diffrent protoset "cod/bassjigs" to aussie for one skilled competition fisher.  ;)

Sry, but i havent permit to show pictures yet.

Btw, i today got couple of beauties from USA.  You might know Verlon Claudill who makes frogskinned lures.

Kitos

Those are some awsome lures man!
Title: Re: Finnish style lures
Post by: Piatu on Mar 18, 2011, 06:24 AM
Thanks guys.
Catfish  ,you got PM.

I'll put new  pictures at here for time to time...propably quite lot, because at this summer i make temporary work place to our summer cottage.....Whole summer fishing and making lures. ;D

At here is some stores where are little quantities for sell, but because i make all from starting (even bodies too ) i cannot afford large amounts to stores.
And fishskins cannot handle like series. All skins must to choose to fit to lures and these need quite lot more work than painted/foiled ones.

Those frankie fish are so cool.  Maybe adding a small band aid to the bite mark would be funny too.  ;)

Great work as always.

Wow Those would send our Bass fishermen over the edge. Very nice as always! I have nothing new to show yet as I am remodeling dining room so I have been spending all my time on that. Your work just is so incredible I love it. Mother natures paint jobs on the skins are so amazing when you really look at those lures. No way can it be reproduced. You just  added it to lures and make every lure a work of art. Amazing.

Very Impressive. I can see those Zanders waiting in line to eat a few of these lures. Been fishing with a few that I made some of those jigging Raps and stick baits like yours shown here. Had some good luck all the way around. Even landed some nice Trout last time out along with some nice 'Eyes. Something about these lures maybe just because they are unique in color deffinatly gets the fish to bite them.

Awsome job Piatu.  Very neat style of lures, color choices and lure skins. 8)

I have found that fish skin is really tuff stuff so how do fish skin lures hold up to toothy predators like pike? ???

Do you tan the fish skin like a taxidermist does?

I have few suspending prototypes under work right now and i think that these might work quite well :)... but later more about these....

I dont use any tannig.

Varnish what i use is very hard stuff and i put totally 9-14 layers, so there will came some scratchs but nothing bigger ones.

absolutely beautiful work there.

must charge a good price for one of them.

i'd like to start trying to make a few of my own lures myself. What would you recomend
for a beginner to do.
it must take years of practice to get as good as you are.

thanks for any tips.

Check out the do-it-yourself/lure making thread on Ice Shanty.  He goes into detail in a couple posts about some of his techniques.  There a great read and VERY inspirational!

Yep, there is some explanation about my techniques at iceshanty.

At starting, most important is wish to learn and want to try new techniques.
Its hard way but with making will teach and explanations about techniques will find in internet.

There is no any "right way" to make lures and chemicals are diffrent between diffrent countries so i cannot help about these...at here we have possible to buy specialized varnishes and paints for luremaking.

But i remember my first one....
Piece of pine and aluminium, knife ,sandpaper and nailvarnish from my mother :D...over 20years ago.

Start from cheap stuff and try...try and try....you can buy better tools later, its not important at starting.
When you catch first fish from your own lure...you're hooked in luremaking.
Good luck and i dont know better hobby than luremaking and remember there is no any limits with techniques.

Over 95% from my year production are coverd with diffrent fishskins. Mostly perch and roach but i have used pike, zander whitefish, arctic char, strurgeon , ruffe ....many more and some from smoked fishes ...allmost every fishes what i have got my hands.

Not easiest way, but real natural in lures.

Old Wise One

Look under "Jigging" their is a childs board under that topic for lure makeing. Its a new format in Iceshanty to handle the user member load we get. That topic has been hot sense we got Piatu as a member and we hope to keep it hot this up coming season.  We have seen a bigger membership following to that topic. And glad to say a bigger participation too from our talented members.

Piatu again great work Looks to me like you are leaving the pectoral fins attached in thoses latest lures. Great idea.

At now its going ~57 Us$ and few days is left.

I hope that moderators dont delete this , because i cannot even sell any sturgeons outside from EU.
All sturgeon parts need CITES-permit and its cost 170€  (250 Us$)/parcel  >:(

Piatu You never cease to amaze me. I got one of your ice jigs from one of the shanty drawings.
I know you make them for fishing but I'm afraid of loosing it so it may never see water.
I show all the people that look at my old lure collection and they all say "someone made that no way".
keep up the good work.

I got some new colors in the mail last night, and there a hit with the VP (my daughter)!  She's especially excited about the "Ruby Slipper" color.  I can see some red/pink and red/purple jigs coming out soon.

I'll post some pictures once this batch of jigs is finished.
