Title: Orman
Post by: tehwarrior50 on Mar 20, 2012, 03:55 AM
Anyone having any luck at Orman yet?
I went out tonight in the channel just past the bridge (toward the resavoir). I think I got one light bite but it was too windy by the dam to fish anything but jigs.

Fished for a couple hours today. Wind kicked up just after launching. Caught a 17" eye second cast on a swim bait. About half hour later another one same size, same bait. Then broke the bait off and could not find another one in the boat. LOL 1000's of plastic and nope. Water was 45 when I launched and after about an hour was 44 the rest of the day. Fish came in 10' of water.

Fished the face of the dam on sunday and caught 7. Six slots and one over. All males and they were leaking everywhere.

Nice work Wy-Joe. The last couple times I went out to the dam it was windy as heck. I fished the channel right on the spill way and it was good lot of bites but hard to hook with jigs. Can't wait for a calm evening on the dam.

I'm heading to the channel this evening for a couple hours. Will be in a white silverado if anyone else is there. Stop and say hi.

12 eyes yesterday. 4 overs. pitching jigs at the face of the dam.

Went to Orman this afternoon...tried both sides of the dam face but just too much wind blowing directly into the dam.  Moved over to the canal with everyone else but no one seemed to be catching any fish.  Didn't even SEE a fish get caught today...should have gone catfishing on the Belle Fourche river instead.

Post by: KingCat on Apr 02, 2012, 03:22 PM
cynjon - have you had any luck on the Belle this spring? I haven't tried, but didn't look to be running too high/fast this weekend. I'll be out there somewhere this weekend I"m sure.

Post by: cynjon on Apr 02, 2012, 10:04 PM
Haven't been out catfishing yet this spring, but a guy I work with went out 2 weekends ago and caught a 4 1/2 pounder.  Might give it a try this weekend...

Crazy idea.
Any one think that noodling (hand fishing)  the belle fourche river would be possible?
Title: Re: Orman
Post by: KingCat on Apr 04, 2012, 02:54 PM
oh i think a guy could noodle on the belle river, there's enough gaps and holes in the banks to allow it. I for one won't do it, but i'd sure like to watch.

At least there's no water moccasins to worry about!  Still, no noodling for me, thanks...

I'm hoping to get out there tomorrow or saturday, sure there will be a big crowd but will see what happens. probably need to restock my jig supply. may try some cranks if not too windy, but hate losiing them expensive SOBs.

The dam on Orman hot from both shore and boat? What are you guys using, was out last saturday and tried everything in my tackle box, and had no luck at all, the boats going by infront of us were catching walleye, but was really slow! Just looking to catch fish, not looking for your so called "secret" spots!
Title: Re: Orman
Post by: KingCat on Apr 06, 2012, 02:14 PM
i'm guessing hot for both shore and boat. i usually pitch jigs and minnows or gulp/plastic, and cast crankbaits parallel to the shore if possible. this time of year, the time of day plays a big role in catching. I think dark has been good lately.

Fished the dam yesterday afternoon and evening  only caught one eye in the slot and two smallmouth bass.  Lots of ppl started to come out at 5 for the evening bite and everyone around us was cachting walleye but us.  guy to our right caught atleast 6 and the group to the left caught atleast 4 four.  Also heard of walleye being caught in cannel right before dark and catfish after dark.  both groups around us casting jigs and my only eye came on a crappie rig.  also seen a guy in a boat pick up a eye right infront of me when i first got there.

So has the water out there been really churned up the last three days. Its been high seas at night. Managed to catch one in the slot and one at 18 tonight. Also they seem to biting really light lately.

Went out fri morning and got schooled by my wife and the kids. They caught 3 slot eyes in an hour. Even my 3.5 year old had a walleye on his spiderman rod. Either it just wasn't my day or else I was too busy trying to control the boat in the waves. Tried to get out of the wind but I had enough of the high seas and left way to early.

Fished the cannel for 2 1/2 hours tonight(sat in the rain!) with my dad and got a 18 1/4 and 22.  also got a 22in drum which put up a really nice fight both eyes were males.

Fished the cannel again today had 5 or 6 really light bites then at 630 a 23in cat bent my pole almost in half.  Kinda sad no eyes but the cat will eat good too.

haven't been up to orman for a while, but heading out there maybe Fri nite and Saturday. Broke down and upgraded to an older used (but newer than my older older one) boat so will be out seeing what needs to be fixed, and hopefully being able to fish. haven't been out on a boat on Orman this early, i guess i will try jigging and lindy rigs, see what happens.

battled some awful conditions last week on orman. had decent luck pulling plugs, caught three in the slot, as that was about all i could do in the rain and wind (which is why i say decent luck!). tried bottom bouncing but didn't pan out. fished the south side of the lake. anyone else been out?

No, I didn't fish this year. From what I hear the fish cooperated a little. The weather, well it hardly ever cooperates. If I find out the results, I will post.

Well went out for the last time in the canoe and did pretty good  hit four between 18 and 19 ,  one really nice 24in  just shy of six pounds, one slot and one 14.75 all in about three hours in the canoe so really looking forward to the boat coming soon.  We were plugging off fruitdale pt.  lots of boats seemed to be out fishing the area.

Fished this weekend with decent luck eyes from shore in the evening and plugging in the canoe for a couple hours each day. best part was my brother in law found a dead walleye 31in. long.  no marks or anything on it and pretty fresh still had some red in the gills so that was pretty cool.   Walleyes seemed to be deeper then the last couple weeks caught them as deep as 24 with plugs

Post by: KingCat on Jun 04, 2012, 11:55 AM
the fish did move a little deeper i think. fished sunday and had to move deeper, and only action was on crawlers. did have a couple hits on cranks but we were too slow in getting to the rods. oh well. fished mid-day, bite seemed to improve quite a bit around 3 p.m., right when we had to get off the water. jgouldin, i think i saw your canoe last weekend, i'll have to drop by.

Ya the canoe was out last weekend but we should be done taking that out i will be in a new 16 blue crestliner.  I think i will be out sun. Dont know where we will fish though.  What kinda cranks were you pulling if you dont mind me asking we have had good luck with cranks so far this year.

i tried a Salmo hornet, Flicker Shad and Firetiger Rapala. The Rapala had the hits. I"m stocking up on some new ones this weekend. Had a nice size collection of cranks but had them stolen when i was in Devils Lake last year, and haven't built up the collection again yet.

Post by: jgouldin on Jun 05, 2012, 07:51 PM
I would suggest some reef runner  deep divers (800 series) I have good luck with them and they are not as spendy as Rapala.  I also use the flicker shad and rapala also.  Ormans best colors for me have been black&silver, perch, white, or purple tiger (purple tiger was a favorite when i was a kid too.  Everyone has their own favorites though.

Went to Orman this morning. We trolled up and down the channel in my canoe dragging jigs with minnows, worms, and curly tails. No bites. It got really windy and made it quite a hassle to control the canoe so we went to the dam and hiked down to the water and threw jigs and a few different kinds of crank baits until the rain and wind wore us out. No bites. The water temperature at the channel was 46 degrees and the water at the face was 40 degrees. Get out there and POST REPORTS PEOPLE!

Fished the tourney last weekend.  weighed both overs both days but lots off ppl catching fish most teams were weighing fish from what i seen we didnt stay for the offical placings so cant tell you anything about that.  Sat we fished the dam and the reef infront of the cedars and caught two overs and one slot mostly pulling jigs with grub tails (lots of people were catching fish)  Sun we started at the dam then the cedars and no fish so went off fruitdale point pulling plugs and caught 4 overs and a striped bass(or white bass i think) in about 4 hours.  All fish sat were milking and only one sun was milking.  Water is warming up finally after this horrible april so good luck everyone(go get them holetender!! ;D)

Made it to orman again to talked the lovely wife and kids to go out with me (1 and 4 years old).  We pulled plugs from 1pm to 4pm off fruitdale point in 11 to 15 feet of water and caught 3 slots and 9 over the 18in mark with the biggest being around 22in.  Red has been the best color this spring and i only have to so going to go and stock up never had much luck with red before.

Killed em at stormin orman this morning.  Me dad and tanner (my 4 yr old who caught most the fish) boated 28 eyes today pulling flicker shad 20 of which were in the fruitdale bay.  Biggest was 21 and we only kept our three over and all the rest where slot or overs besides the one 10iner we caught.  We targeted 11fow but caught fish from 8 to 15. fished from 7 to 12 when we got rained and hailed off the lake.

Fished Friday afternoon, first walleye was around 25" and pouring eggs so got her back right away. Landed several males that were milting as well. Water was 41 to 42 degrees. All fish were caught in about 10' of water. Nothing on live bait, plastic and crankbaits.

Not going to lie have been to angostura a lot more than orman but  fishing is still good.  The couple times I have been to orman the overs this year are bigger.....pretty easy to get the 20-23in.  As always lots of slot fish and a huge amount of unders(most are 8-10in but you can still pick up some 13-15 for your limits.)  I have caught lots and lots of little baby white bass up there this year too(every once in a while a 14-17in one will come out too.
