Peepers been out on the warm nights. I know the bullhead are there it's just been crappy weather so I haven't gone. Just got the worm boxes out and ready for the next warm rain hopefully I can collect enough for most the year then I'll get a bucket or 2.

No peepers yet at my place they don't like the cold wind. Frost just went out with the monsoon last night so no crawlers yet. I'd like to try frozen clams like you use in the ocean but no luck locating them locally. chicken livers work well but a pain to keep on the hook. tried spawn sacks and ended up fighting with soggy cloth more than fishing so gave up on them. they fry up good with a little corn meal. May try frozen mussels as they look cheaper than night crawlers and easier to get with my old sore back. I wish I could find some bullheads to cooperate during the day like Mr Trap.

Use some squid, it will stay on the hook most of the night, but more importantly, put some glow beads on the hook, often you won't even need bait...

WHAT WARM NIGHTS?!?!?!

 :rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:

The nights I've been out when it was 50 and no wind I hear them. I keep my house at 60° all winter. I guess warm to me is different than the old folks who live in Florida half the year. Lol

Yup - 50 or 60 is definitely not a warm night.

Also, I don't (and won't) live in Florida half the year.

But in 6 months I will be living there all year.   8)

I'll have to try them if I can find them, maybe price chopper ?  I looked in Stewarts worms were $3.50 a dozen  NOT ME !  I may have to suck it up and pick some with my old tired back. I just wish we could get some decent weather.  A nice calm nite in the 50"s and I'll drag the boat out.

With the squid don't thaw more than one to cut up as you may find just one strip will last most of the night. Do not forget them in your car or boat or you will be very sorry...

one more deserter from NY eh. lol  that state and city are going to be a ghost town before long!  mass numbers of people moving away from the failed leadership and policies!  unfortunately those people take their thinking to other states/cities and infect them like a cancer!  Florida should screen the people they let move there or that freedom will disappear there too.

bullheads will eat anything. best i have found is danny kings punch bait blood flavor.  they smell that from a loooooong ways away.  chicken skin another tough alternative to worms.  and dont forget the chum!

Turkey skin brined and scented is another option for bait
Road kill or fish guts in a burlap bag or bucket with holes will also help draw them in ,

we used to do the same, but with dog food, in the Catt when we fished for kitties.
We used small canvas parts cinch sacks.
Put a few chucks of dog food in one, add a few rocks, tie t up and toss them out.
The canvas rots over time, so no pollution.
We would toss them upstream about 50 yds from where we fished.

I was thinking about trying to hit beaver island for some bullhead and perch. I’ve never really fished it before, but have a ton of crawlers Ready to be used. where’s the best place to find fish and minnows? In the marina or in that gully?
Thanks in advance.

From the parking lot go to the docks and head right.
About 1/3-1/2 way down the dock the water runs underneath.  You will find emeralds there.
Guys sit on the ends of the docks and fish off them casting out into the middle.

I love this thread. I always keep up on it. Here in indiana most people consider them trash fish. Hardly anyone targets them.
My local lake is being drained for rehabilitation.  Last time they drained it we caught tons of giant bullhead. You guys would love it!

Your talking about using a cannon to send out a rubber band? I have never seen anyone in this state do it.
Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: stripernut on Apr 05, 2022, 03:36 PM
I know an old lady (94) that would whip around a sock filled with sand and get that sucker out there, no problem... I have never heard of anyone using a cannon, but I bet that would work, set it up like a potato gun. For anyone that does not know what we are talking about;
No bell on hers, she would just sit there until the line would "jiggle" set the hook, pull it in, rebait if needed, and let go of the line, back to the fish...
Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: greensider on Apr 05, 2022, 04:57 PM
Remember trot lines are not legal in NY
Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: skinny40 on Apr 05, 2022, 06:21 PM
Not a trot line. Legal as long as it has 5 hooks or less and you are watching it. And yes the cannon is set up like a potato launcher. Seen both gas and air powered ones that fire off scuba tanks and even seen them launching bottom rigs way out there. Trolly lines they were called in the Detroit area where the target was salmon and trout off the piers. The ocean guys had sinker, leader, and baited hook frozen in an ice missle and we're sending it out 300 yds easy fired out of a 10' potato mortar cannon. They were hooking big fish way out there and had to fight them back in for ever. The trolly lines for trout you don't want out that far since your hand lining but have seen them sent way out there at times with the cannon.
Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: skinny40 on Apr 05, 2022, 06:34 PM
So the pic shows the basic setup. The sinker needs to be good enough to hold but still be light enough that you can bring it back before the rubber band breaks but it happens. The hooks are tied to mainline and sent out. When a fish bites the bell goes off. Hand line it in, unhook, rebait, rubber band will pull the baits back to the same spot they were. It's a pain to set up at times but once set and the bite is on its insanely fast and easy. From a dock or off a pier into a chanel is a good easy setup. The rubber band material was sold on rolls of different weights and lengths at the bait stores. I think about it all the time but haven't done anything like it in a long time.

Ahh, thanks for this thread.  I've been in a slump since having covid and just haven't had the motivation to go bullhead fishing.  Everyone turns to me for advice when they are biting and I tell them now but I haven't been out cause my mind is in a dark place right now and trying to pull my head out of it.  Kinda scary at times.  I just need to get out perch fishing or bullhead fishing and hope it helps out.  Thanks guys

Thanks guys.  You guys are great.  I'm gonna go hit the atm and go get me a lb of blood suckers and head to fairhaven like I used to tonight and see how I do.  I really hope this dark place leaves me soon.  I think that's what scares me the most.  Can't even describe it.  Wish my boat was going I'd try and get out for perch.  If anyone has a spot in their boat for a perch trip I'll pay for gas and minnows.  Tight lines everyone.

My wife and I have been vigilant throughout this entire pandemic about wearing masks, keeping our distance, as well as constant attention to hand cleanliness. Fortunately, neither of us has been sick with the virus, nor have we had as much as a common cold or sniffle. Quite frankly, I like it that way. Not feeling ill in any way for the past 2 years I feel is a testament to all these precautions. I intend to make this a new way of life no matter how many odd looks I/we get in the market, or any were around crowds. Not picking on anyone or place in particular, but the worst areas are the shopping centers and coffee shops and places like that. Just think of how many hands and or sneezes have been where you contact in any given day during your normal routine. I don't have to be told by any one to keep my distance or wear a mask. I'm just doing it for me.  By the way,  good luck everyone with those bullheads- you can't catch a cold from a hornpout.

Dehead, degut, and rinse.
Peel the skin of you wish.

Mix up some flour with seasoning.
I like S&P, onion and garlic powder, NOT onion and garlic salt!!!!!!!!!
I really love to pan fry them in bacon drippings, but butter, margarine, of a little corn oil works.
The backbones, and all the rest simply peel out.

Awesome!

Tons of trap options for leaches. They all work. My advice is use whatever you want for traps. Bait must be fresh bloody meat. Liver is a common choice. Most important is location. You should look for shallow ponds that don't have any big fish. Like duck marshes with the black mud and floating green algae. Set the trap and check early before the sun comes up completely. Lots of places you will get nothing or only a few small ones. Just keep hitting different ponds or ditches till you find jumbos. Keep them cold and change water daily. Once you let the water get cloudy they will die fast. Even after you change the water so don't let them get cloudy. Change the water every day or you'll lose them before the season ends. Worst part is trying to separate the smalls from the jumbos. In the correct pond or marsh you will get more than you'll ever need. The best area around me is a spot your not allowed to collect bait anymore. If you stir up the dirt you will see tons of them swimming to escape the disturbance. If your not getting them move on to another pond. If there in there they will find the trap wherever it is set. If the small ones are big enough to get a hook into then use them for bluegill or perch. Absolutely killer bait.

I fillet them just like any other fish. Seems so much easier than the gutting, skinning, and dealing with bones. Now I just need to find a place locally that I can get into them good with my 2 boys and not subject them to nighttime April weather up on the St. Lawrence! Any suggestions would be appreciated 🙂.

The bones on a bullhead come out after cooking attached to the spine.  None stay behind (the same with cats too).
My grampa taught me this almost 60 yrs ago.
Been doing it that way since
Most of the rest get filleted.  Unless it a big fish and we are steaking it.

I got out last nite as well -  Very odd bite  I set up about 7:00 in the same place I did well at 5 days ago. Water was very cloudy from the rain as iceman said. At 10:00 I had 2 fish and was ready to throw in the towel on an otherwise nice evening when I got a couple bites. Patience paid off as I quit at 12:30 am with 19   Still not a great bite but 19 is much better than a skunk   Now I just have to catch some of those leeches and give them a try. I found out that beef liver just does not work. Not at all. Should have kept it for the leeches.

I suppose it could work, but I wouldn't lay odds on it. Many say bullheads will eat anything. Nothing could be further from the truth. I find them to be fussy critters. Worms all ways work but they're not the best. Chicken livers are the best I have found if you can keep them on a hook. My next effort will be leeches when I can get some. I've found a lot of bait fish and perch inside bullheads but fishing with them has not produced for me other than an occasional bite. I don't like those nasty commercial catfish baits-Too Stinky

Title: Re: bullheads

Ive thought about shrimp as well, Worms by the pound is very expensive if you do the numbers.  3.50 / dozen divided by 12 = $.29 each  I tried squid   much cheaper but no bites just like the beef liver.  Maybe those pickled mussels would work. some say they like garlic and they have garlic flavered mussels in the store for about $5 a package probably 50 or more in package. Again cheaper than worms. Hate to say it but I'm always looking for a deal.  And if the mussels don't work I can eat the rest just like the squid.  Calamari    MMM

I also have used minnows after raising a bullhead in a fish tank once.  I came home from perch fishing and dumped the left over bait in the tank with the bullhead and he went on a feeding frenzy.  Little Ba$tard ate minnows until he was about to pop.  It was after that I tried minnows and was pleasantly surprised how well I did catching bullhead on minnows as well.

Wish I could do that, sounds so much easier than trailering the boat to and from.  where I fish I can't get near the water on foot or tire, got to use the boat. It's worth the trouble though, bullheads are great eating and come in descent size.

Post by: 62 & Done on Apr 25, 2022, 08:47 AM
Very strange night. Conditions were great with no bugs, no wind, no rain which was a first for this season.  It was a very fussy bite with several fish just picking up the bait and sitting there with no indication that there was a bite. If they felt any resistance, they just dropped it. I fished till 1 am when the wind came up and quit.
   Results were :   Worms 9 bullheads & 2 perch
Chicken liver 5 bullheads but they would not touch one with an egg sack on it
                          Mussels zero
                          Fish scraps zero
I wonder if the cold snowmelt had anything to do with the slow bite.  This is an area where I usually have a 30 fish night with nice conditions like last night. The water is still very cloudy and it seemed that any baits in front of the lantern light got ignored. Baits off the bow and stern in the dark got the most bites.  I also set a leech trap last night with a tough venison stake an got zero.
Any ideas  any one ?       got some cleaning to do now and some fryin later
Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: Mac Attack on Apr 25, 2022, 05:35 PM
You might be right with the snow melt thing.  Cools the water and shuts down their metabolism, and need for fuel.

Have you tried shrimp for bait?
We used to use cheap canned salad shrimp.  Used to toss the leftover “junk” in as chum.  (Not the can of course)

Bullhead are very active under the ice, at night I will often have large schools of them swim through and readily hit a jig... I don't think a little cold water will slow them down much, maybe they feed somewhere else when the temp drops?
Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: Mac Attack on Apr 25, 2022, 08:51 PM
Fish are cold blooded.
They all experience a slowdown in their metabolism when their environment gets colder.  Read this as a decrease in temp!!
Walleye bite thru the ice really well.
However, we have all been out when a front comes thru changing air pressures, and dropping water temps causing them to go deep and get tight lipped.
Not saying you are not right here.
Just trying to rationalize 62’s situation the other night.
Hell, we could both be wrong.
Maybe he has caught all the bullies in that water!!!

of course  water temp.  plays a  big part of how  active  any fish is ... many things  can turn a  fish bite  on or off including changing water temp., run off, barometric pressure , light ,tides ,and the  list  goes on and on......you  may catch a  few  bullheads  in march threw the  ice  as the  water starts to warm i have  myself  but  i ain't never seen anyone  fill a  bucket   threw the  ice

Well, this is actually possible.  Water has the unusual property that it is most dense at a temperature of 39 degrees F.  (I know, it seems counter intuitive that water at 39 degrees is denser than colder water at 33 degrees.)  So, if undisturbed by current it can easily happen that the warmest water in a shallow body of water is at the bottom.  For this reason ice forms from the top down, a darn good thing else plant life would die.  If current or anything else causes an upwelling this band of water can be pushed to the top.  From my SCUBA diving experience this band of water can occur with a sharp divide.  In Lake O, the divide is shimmering and well defined with the cold, dense water usually crystal clear with great visibility.

Jperch thank you!!!
I do realize that water in lower parts of the water column is warmer than the top..
Just seems like 40° water ONLY a foot under the ice isnt realistic..

You Definitely have some good information there for sure!!!!

True!

This is why ice floats in (unfrozen) water.
Because in its liquid form it is denser than in its frozen form.

It worked great! Landed 17 bulls and a bonus 14" spawned out perch. Two of the guys got a skunk and one other guy landed 2. I really like the new setup! Zero tangles too. From shore, using shrimp.
