i dodged rain and got where the wind wasn't to bad and got a few bullheads .....
-
Nice, but I haven’t heard any peepers yet so I’m gonna hold tight for another week or two
-
strange i get them as soon as the ice is off and i usually get them in the day
-
That’s a good deal right there. Keep at them yummy fellas!
-
Peepers were going all night here and have been on and off for a couple weeks depending on temps
-
Peepers been out on the warm nights. I know the bullhead are there it's just been crappy weather so I haven't gone. Just got the worm boxes out and ready for the next warm rain hopefully I can collect enough for most the year then I'll get a bucket or 2.
-
No peepers here yet. Gonna be a while…
-
Peepers been out on the warm nights.
WHAT WARM NIGHTS?!?!?!
:rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:
-
No peepers yet at my place they don't like the cold wind. Frost just went out with the monsoon last night so no crawlers yet. I'd like to try frozen clams like you use in the ocean but no luck locating them locally. chicken livers work well but a pain to keep on the hook. tried spawn sacks and ended up fighting with soggy cloth more than fishing so gave up on them. they fry up good with a little corn meal. May try frozen mussels as they look cheaper than night crawlers and easier to get with my old sore back. I wish I could find some bullheads to cooperate during the day like Mr Trap.
-
Use some squid, it will stay on the hook most of the night, but more importantly, put some glow beads on the hook, often you won't even need bait...

Yup - same reason we use leeches
-
How much do leaches go for
-
worms are cheap at walmart and even cheaper if you pick your own......
-
bullhead fishing was canceled last night due to uncontrollable acts of mother nature....... it was arbys 2 for 6 buck fish sandwiches
-
WHAT WARM NIGHTS?!?!?!
:rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:
The nights I've been out when it was 50 and no wind I hear them. I keep my house at 60° all winter. I guess warm to me is different than the old folks who live in Florida half the year. Lol

Yup - 50 or 60 is definitely not a warm night.
Also, I don't (and won't) live in Florida half the year.
But in 6 months I will be living there all year. 8)

Mac Attack, wherein FL are you thinking?

I'll have to try them if I can find them, maybe price chopper ? I looked in Stewarts worms were $3.50 a dozen NOT ME ! I may have to suck it up and pick some with my old tired back. I just wish we could get some decent weather. A nice calm nite in the 50"s and I'll drag the boat out.
-
With the squid don't thaw more than one to cut up as you may find just one strip will last most of the night. Do not forget them in your car or boat or you will be very sorry...

going to give them a try seems like they'll be so much easier than dealing with dirty crawlers
-

Just Mac
SW Florida.
North Port
-
one more deserter from NY eh. lol that state and city are going to be a ghost town before long! mass numbers of people moving away from the failed leadership and policies! unfortunately those people take their thinking to other states/cities and infect them like a cancer! Florida should screen the people they let move there or that freedom will disappear there too.
bullheads will eat anything. best i have found is danny kings punch bait blood flavor. they smell that from a loooooong ways away. chicken skin another tough alternative to worms. and dont forget the chum!
-
Turkey skin brined and scented is another option for bait
Road kill or fish guts in a burlap bag or bucket with holes will also help draw them in ,
-
When I was a kid, they would sink a cow's head...
-
my father would sink a burlap bag of chicken guts with a rope and pull it in when he was fishing. We caught a bunch !
-
Ivory soap wrks as all round fish attractant.
-
Not so sure I'd want to be throwing soap in the water. I guess I'll stick with bait on a hook and hope for the best. Gonna try squid, maybe tomorrow
-

we used to do the same, but with dog food, in the Catt when we fished for kitties.
We used small canvas parts cinch sacks.
Put a few chucks of dog food in one, add a few rocks, tie t up and toss them out.
The canvas rots over time, so no pollution.
We would toss them upstream about 50 yds from where we fished.

I was thinking about trying to hit beaver island for some bullhead and perch. I’ve never really fished it before, but have a ton of crawlers Ready to be used. where’s the best place to find fish and minnows? In the marina or in that gully?
Thanks in advance.

i trout fished and i was a little tired this evening

From the parking lot go to the docks and head right.
About 1/3-1/2 way down the dock the water runs underneath. You will find emeralds there.
Guys sit on the ends of the docks and fish off them casting out into the middle.
-
Thank you Mack. Can’t wait to go give it a try

Does anyone still use a Power Line for their hornpout fishing?
-
I love this thread. I always keep up on it. Here in indiana most people consider them trash fish. Hardly anyone targets them.
My local lake is being drained for rehabilitation. Last time they drained it we caught tons of giant bullhead. You guys would love it!
-
Does anyone still use a Power Line for their hornpout fishing?
Your talking about using a cannon to send out a rubber band? I have never seen anyone in this state do it.
-
I know an old lady (94) that would whip around a sock filled with sand and get that sucker out there, no problem... I have never heard of anyone using a cannon, but I bet that would work, set it up like a potato gun. For anyone that does not know what we are talking about;
No bell on hers, she would just sit there until the line would "jiggle" set the hook, pull it in, rebait if needed, and let go of the line, back to the fish...
-
Remember trot lines are not legal in NY
-
Not a trot line. Legal as long as it has 5 hooks or less and you are watching it. And yes the cannon is set up like a potato launcher. Seen both gas and air powered ones that fire off scuba tanks and even seen them launching bottom rigs way out there. Trolly lines they were called in the Detroit area where the target was salmon and trout off the piers. The ocean guys had sinker, leader, and baited hook frozen in an ice missle and we're sending it out 300 yds easy fired out of a 10' potato mortar cannon. They were hooking big fish way out there and had to fight them back in for ever. The trolly lines for trout you don't want out that far since your hand lining but have seen them sent way out there at times with the cannon.
-
So the pic shows the basic setup. The sinker needs to be good enough to hold but still be light enough that you can bring it back before the rubber band breaks but it happens. The hooks are tied to mainline and sent out. When a fish bites the bell goes off. Hand line it in, unhook, rebait, rubber band will pull the baits back to the same spot they were. It's a pain to set up at times but once set and the bite is on its insanely fast and easy. From a dock or off a pier into a chanel is a good easy setup. The rubber band material was sold on rolls of different weights and lengths at the bait stores. I think about it all the time but haven't done anything like it in a long time.
-
Interesting….never heard of this. Would be fun to do!
-
Lol I was referring to the diagram it has more than 5 lolol
-
looks like too much work to me. I'll stick to rod & reel. Hopefully I can round up some crawlers tonite and give them whisker fish a go tomorrow

Ahh, thanks for this thread. I've been in a slump since having covid and just haven't had the motivation to go bullhead fishing. Everyone turns to me for advice when they are biting and I tell them now but I haven't been out cause my mind is in a dark place right now and trying to pull my head out of it. Kinda scary at times. I just need to get out perch fishing or bullhead fishing and hope it helps out. Thanks guys
-
Keep your head up iceman! Hope you get through this alright. Get out there and hook a few!
-
Got out at the local gravel pit. No bullheads but the shiner bite was good.

i had covid in the beginning of the pandemic and i understand the "dark place" the sooner you push yourself out and doing the things you love the better you will feel......
-
Peepers were going like hell last night in 3 mile bay swamp, should be groovy for some bullheads.
-
Iceman ...
I've had the Chinese flu twice now!!
Super easy to let it get you mentally along with physically...
HOWEVER.....
Get yourself out fishing... itll be the best medicine any doctor could prescribe for ya
-
Iceman
Don't let crap get ya down , believe me I know what it's like not to be in the game ! I'm there myself for along time now but just keep reading theses pages and commenting ,guys on here will keep spirits up for sure !!!!
Ben ,
Send PM if ya want!!
-
Iceman if you go mud guzzler fishing you will realize what your missing
I was down for a few months a few years back from an arterial dissection which caused 2 strokes , , what ever time I have left it will be with a rod and reel in hand enjoying the outdoors, alone or with friends
So get out there
My PM box always has room 👍
-
Thanks guys. You guys are great. I'm gonna go hit the atm and go get me a lb of blood suckers and head to fairhaven like I used to tonight and see how I do. I really hope this dark place leaves me soon. I think that's what scares me the most. Can't even describe it. Wish my boat was going I'd try and get out for perch. If anyone has a spot in their boat for a perch trip I'll pay for gas and minnows. Tight lines everyone.
-
Well guys. I did it. Went out last night and filled 1 6 gal bucket and put about 15 more in a 2nd 1.

Iceman, I had Covid back in January and I totally understand this dark place it leaves us with. I’ve never experienced anything like it from being sick. I’m still fighting it. Awesome to see you pushed thru it and got out for a successful bullhead night!! 😁
-
long term studies have just started so far it appears about half the survivors have covid depression and the severity of the illness seems to make the depression more severe....keep in mind it's a new day and new adventures await ..... keep swinging guys it will pass and don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about it
-
Had it 2x.. this last time (jan) was rough.. not AS SICK as the first time but it lasted ALMOST 4 full weeks...
Glad its behind me now
Keep your chin up iceman!!!!!!

My wife and I have been vigilant throughout this entire pandemic about wearing masks, keeping our distance, as well as constant attention to hand cleanliness. Fortunately, neither of us has been sick with the virus, nor have we had as much as a common cold or sniffle. Quite frankly, I like it that way. Not feeling ill in any way for the past 2 years I feel is a testament to all these precautions. I intend to make this a new way of life no matter how many odd looks I/we get in the market, or any were around crowds. Not picking on anyone or place in particular, but the worst areas are the shopping centers and coffee shops and places like that. Just think of how many hands and or sneezes have been where you contact in any given day during your normal routine. I don't have to be told by any one to keep my distance or wear a mask. I'm just doing it for me. By the way, good luck everyone with those bullheads- you can't catch a cold from a hornpout.
-
I out fished all others around me. Difference was I was using leeches all others were using worms. Leeches lost a heafty penny this year $65/lb but I swear by them.

Way to go IceMan! That must have been fun!
Those leeches really are bullhead candy.
I tried trapping them last year with not much success.
I'll try in front of my place (mid-lake south shore Oneida) tonight or tomorrow night...

Yeah I've been looking for a good place to trap them myself. $65/lb is getting crazy but they work so I pay it.
-
how do you trap them????
-
how do you trap them????
Google i t. Easy with aluminum pie pans. You must know of a pond someplace ..
-
A burlap sack with chicken liver tied shut and throw in pond leeches can squeeze though sack fibers to get to liver
-
Lots of videos on trapping them
-
What is your favorite way of cooking them? The bullhead, not the leaches.
-
What is your favorite way of cooking them? The bullhead, not the leaches.
Dehead, degut, and rinse.
Peel the skin of you wish.
Mix up some flour with seasoning.
I like S&P, onion and garlic powder, NOT onion and garlic salt!!!!!!!!!
I really love to pan fry them in bacon drippings, but butter, margarine, of a little corn oil works.
The backbones, and all the rest simply peel out.
Awesome!
-

I tried the folded over disposable pie pans with chicken livers. Tried 3 different spots that looked "leechy" but only caught 2.
-
To clean them try this technique (pretty slick!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RjEUSkdks4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RjEUSkdks4)
-
That is a great way to clean them
-
i like bullheads pan fried or deep fried but i did some in the air fryer that came our good! i also like them on the BBQ
-
I like them the next day cold on a white bread sammich with ketchup
-
Smaller ones Pan fried here
-
throw them in the grease
-
Got another 38 last night. But getting home at 1am and alarm goes off at 5am I'm not a spring chicken like I used to be
-
you get to take a break lol

Tons of trap options for leaches. They all work. My advice is use whatever you want for traps. Bait must be fresh bloody meat. Liver is a common choice. Most important is location. You should look for shallow ponds that don't have any big fish. Like duck marshes with the black mud and floating green algae. Set the trap and check early before the sun comes up completely. Lots of places you will get nothing or only a few small ones. Just keep hitting different ponds or ditches till you find jumbos. Keep them cold and change water daily. Once you let the water get cloudy they will die fast. Even after you change the water so don't let them get cloudy. Change the water every day or you'll lose them before the season ends. Worst part is trying to separate the smalls from the jumbos. In the correct pond or marsh you will get more than you'll ever need. The best area around me is a spot your not allowed to collect bait anymore. If you stir up the dirt you will see tons of them swimming to escape the disturbance. If your not getting them move on to another pond. If there in there they will find the trap wherever it is set. If the small ones are big enough to get a hook into then use them for bluegill or perch. Absolutely killer bait.
-
I fillet them just like any other fish. Seems so much easier than the gutting, skinning, and dealing with bones. Now I just need to find a place locally that I can get into them good with my 2 boys and not subject them to nighttime April weather up on the St. Lawrence! Any suggestions would be appreciated 🙂.
-
i fillet them also. pan fry as you would perch or other panfish
-

X2 No bones on my plate unless they are smelt If a fish is too small to fillet let him grow up. Pan fry in hot oil covered with your favorite seasoned flour or crumbs and serve with frys
-
Hushpuppies too as long as the oil is hot.
-
The bones on a bullhead come out after cooking attached to the spine. None stay behind (the same with cats too).
My grampa taught me this almost 60 yrs ago.
Been doing it that way since
Most of the rest get filleted. Unless it a big fish and we are steaking it.
-
Cook bullheads on a tire in a real hot fire throw bullheads away and eat tire !!!! 😂

you live next to oneida lake ...follow the gas lanterns

Got out again last night. Kinda slow after all the rain but still managed about 15-20. Fairhaven State Park Pond using Leeches. Tight lines guys
-
I got out last nite as well - Very odd bite I set up about 7:00 in the same place I did well at 5 days ago. Water was very cloudy from the rain as iceman said. At 10:00 I had 2 fish and was ready to throw in the towel on an otherwise nice evening when I got a couple bites. Patience paid off as I quit at 12:30 am with 19 Still not a great bite but 19 is much better than a skunk Now I just have to catch some of those leeches and give them a try. I found out that beef liver just does not work. Not at all. Should have kept it for the leeches.
-
I've tryed the beef liver also , absolutely not a bite ,just chicken liver worked for me , my brother and some others who don't fish want some, so I'll probably go out next week and get them some ,don't eat them but it's good layed back fishing from lawn chair !!!😁
-
Had an old timer tell me to soak some sponges in the juice from a sardine can. Any thoughts?
-
I suppose it could work, but I wouldn't lay odds on it. Many say bullheads will eat anything. Nothing could be further from the truth. I find them to be fussy critters. Worms all ways work but they're not the best. Chicken livers are the best I have found if you can keep them on a hook. My next effort will be leeches when I can get some. I've found a lot of bait fish and perch inside bullheads but fishing with them has not produced for me other than an occasional bite. I don't like those nasty commercial catfish baits-Too Stinky
-
Shrimp has always worked well for me, and actually cheaper than buying worms if you can believe it!
-
Ive thought about shrimp as well, Worms by the pound is very expensive if you do the numbers. 3.50 / dozen divided by 12 = $.29 each I tried squid much cheaper but no bites just like the beef liver. Maybe those pickled mussels would work. some say they like garlic and they have garlic flavered mussels in the store for about $5 a package probably 50 or more in package. Again cheaper than worms. Hate to say it but I'm always looking for a deal. And if the mussels don't work I can eat the rest just like the squid. Calamari MMM
-
Going to give it a go tomorrow after work, on a small local lake mud flats.
-
The netting material, we use to tie egg sacs for steelhead, works great for chicken livers. Thread the hook through the sac.
-
easy and less messy on your hands to do chicken livers is cut them roll them in floor and put in a dehydrator...dry them like beef jerky but leave plyable ...it will stay on the hook your hands will stay cleaner and the bullheads love it...cheap hotdogs and raspberry jello .... i have caught them on minnows too.....hard to beat walmart for night crawlers 18 for 3.50
-
I bought a large bag of the original worm bedding on Amazon it's the cleanest bedding there is so no dirt on your hands
-
X2 on Buss bedding
-
I also have used minnows after raising a bullhead in a fish tank once. I came home from perch fishing and dumped the left over bait in the tank with the bullhead and he went on a feeding frenzy. Little Ba$tard ate minnows until he was about to pop. It was after that I tried minnows and was pleasantly surprised how well I did catching bullhead on minnows as well.
-
Skunked out on my spot tonight but shared some good stories with a couple of old buds. The fish just were not there today. Sitting on a bucket never felt better! Maybe try again next chance.

Too bad you got the skunk. Wouldn't you think they would be in the same general area most nites? I've done that too and tried to figure out what I was doing wrong. I guess maybe it's not always me.
On another subject, we just found out this morning that my Mrs. has the covid. Yep, it finally hit home so now I suppose it is just a matter of time and I'll have it too. Oh joy.

That stinks! Sorry to hear that. And to think how careful you and the Mrs. were being and she still caught it somehow. Stay well! You may not get it. My son and I both had it and the wife never got it. And we were not isolating whatsoever from each other. Weird Virus for sure!
-
I feel for you guys. I have had it twice and I'm double vacinated
-
I must be one of the lucky ones. I'm not vaccinated due to problems with previous vaccines. Wife and both daughters have had it and I have been in close contact with multiple people who later tested positive. I was doing shots with one guy who tested positive the next day. Still haven't got it. Weird for sure

My whole family has gotten it and I have yet to get it. I have to Buffalo Bills tailgates smoking blunts bowls joints ECT and drinking off jars of shine with anyone who walked by and wanted hit or a swig and I knock on wood haven't had it and all 5 people in my house have had it. I have tested Everytime and negative everytime

i want a nice night for a family bullhead outing ;D

Went out last night, Only person on the whole pond. Caught 9 big yellow bellies but froze my fingers. Due to frostbite as a kid my fingers can't take the cold so left after couple hours

I'm with you Trapp Would like a nice warm, calm evening I don't think that has happened yet. Frozen fingers and steady sprinkles with occasional wind gusts of 20 plus is not inviting to most. Including myself
-
Went out Friday and Saturday nights in front of my place fishing with worms. Only thing I caught was a buzz. Not one bite!
-
Rest of the week looks crappy, gonna try this weekend.

Maybe take the ice house and the heater bullhead fishing!

I have taken the polar pal and sat in it with heater fishing perch from shore right after ice out

The big buddy heater will go with me next time along with an easy up 10x10 for the rain lol Waiting on the bigger leeches to arrive. If anyone traps them let me know I'll buy them
-
I know it’s not mud guzzler fishing but
We were in goons boat a few days ago in 2-3s perch fishing and had the buddy heater cranked , but we were fishing , catching was slow lol
-
big deck umbrella and the my buddy hand warmers and hot tea or coffee we stand a chance lol

I'm trying to rig up an umbrella in the boat. Haven't got it figured out yet. It just seems to be in the way, falls down, pain in the wind, etc.

I put 1 in my boat , pvc with couplers on each fits umbrella pole perfect , and goes right in my pedestal base
Sorry no pics , when I get the ol gal out I’ll get a couple

The big buddy heater will go with me next time along with an easy up 10x10 for the rain lol Waiting on the bigger leeches to arrive. If anyone traps them let me know I'll buy them
I know Davenports had some nice ones in last week or week before when I was there

Wish I could do that, sounds so much easier than trailering the boat to and from. where I fish I can't get near the water on foot or tire, got to use the boat. It's worth the trouble though, bullheads are great eating and come in descent size.
-
toss the heater in the boat and a umbrella on top ...i do a lot of bullhead fishing in the day too this year has been crazy but usually i'm killing them in the day by now .last year i don't think roy or i fired up the gas lanterns more then a couple times and we both had plenty in the freezer
-
Going after them tonight. I'm loaded up with all kinds of bait and will experiment with chicken liver, fish parts, fresh mussels, and crawlers. we'll see what they like. On the way I'll set a couple leech traps and they'll be for next time. Will keep y'all posted.

Good luck, tight lines!

i want to see how 62 did last night and which baits worked good for him
-
Very strange night. Conditions were great with no bugs, no wind, no rain which was a first for this season. It was a very fussy bite with several fish just picking up the bait and sitting there with no indication that there was a bite. If they felt any resistance, they just dropped it. I fished till 1 am when the wind came up and quit.
Results were : Worms 9 bullheads & 2 perch
Chicken liver 5 bullheads but they would not touch one with an egg sack on it
Mussels zero
Fish scraps zero
I wonder if the cold snowmelt had anything to do with the slow bite. This is an area where I usually have a 30 fish night with nice conditions like last night. The water is still very cloudy and it seemed that any baits in front of the lantern light got ignored. Baits off the bow and stern in the dark got the most bites. I also set a leech trap last night with a tough venison stake an got zero.
Any ideas any one ? got some cleaning to do now and some fryin later
-
You might be right with the snow melt thing. Cools the water and shuts down their metabolism, and need for fuel.
Have you tried shrimp for bait?
We used to use cheap canned salad shrimp. Used to toss the leftover “junk” in as chum. (Not the can of course)

Bullhead are very active under the ice, at night I will often have large schools of them swim through and readily hit a jig... I don't think a little cold water will slow them down much, maybe they feed somewhere else when the temp drops?
-
Fish are cold blooded.
They all experience a slowdown in their metabolism when their environment gets colder. Read this as a decrease in temp!!
Walleye bite thru the ice really well.
However, we have all been out when a front comes thru changing air pressures, and dropping water temps causing them to go deep and get tight lipped.
Not saying you are not right here.
Just trying to rationalize 62’s situation the other night.
Hell, we could both be wrong.
Maybe he has caught all the bullies in that water!!!
😉

Have caught a ton of them under the ice in late March. Water temps 37-40 about a foot under the ice.
-
of course water temp. plays a big part of how active any fish is ... many things can turn a fish bite on or off including changing water temp., run off, barometric pressure , light ,tides ,and the list goes on and on......you may catch a few bullheads in march threw the ice as the water starts to warm i have myself but i ain't never seen anyone fill a bucket threw the ice

How is there ice with a water temp of 37-40?!!?? Pretty sure that's not happening
But hey.. MAYBE IM WRONG ::)

Well, this is actually possible. Water has the unusual property that it is most dense at a temperature of 39 degrees F. (I know, it seems counter intuitive that water at 39 degrees is denser than colder water at 33 degrees.) So, if undisturbed by current it can easily happen that the warmest water in a shallow body of water is at the bottom. For this reason ice forms from the top down, a darn good thing else plant life would die. If current or anything else causes an upwelling this band of water can be pushed to the top. From my SCUBA diving experience this band of water can occur with a sharp divide. In Lake O, the divide is shimmering and well defined with the cold, dense water usually crystal clear with great visibility.

Jperch thank you!!!
I do realize that water in lower parts of the water column is warmer than the top..
Just seems like 40° water ONLY a foot under the ice isnt realistic..
You Definitely have some good information there for sure!!!!

True!
This is why ice floats in (unfrozen) water.
Because in its liquid form it is denser than in its frozen form.

i don't care what anyone says i ain't never seen anyone catch a bucket of bullheads threw the ice ......3 or 4 absolutely a bucket then hell would be colder then that frozen lake

Me too trap' I've caught a few but that's about it. In fact this last season in march we caught a couple each time we went out but I would love to learn how to catch a mess thru the ice. I'm just a bullhead kinda guy. I love em almost as much as a big gill.
-
Jigging at night I move around a bunch and they come thru in schools. No bait is needed just something that glows, if I wanted a bucket all I would need to do is chase the school as I do with yellow perch. Happy to take anyone that wants next season, I don't care I rather eat perch and crappy...
-
Sry been away so long. Covid grabbed me again but I'm still here. While I was sick my leeches died and haven't found a bait shop with any since.

Got out Friday night with 3 friends for some bullhead fishing. I tied a mini version of an inline trot line with the weight on the bottom and a couple of floating jig heads above on dropper loops. It worked great! Landed 17 bulls and a bonus 14" spawned out perch. Two of the guys got a skunk and one other guy landed 2. I really like the new setup! Zero tangles too. From shore, using shrimp.

Congrats Rugburn.
Using floating jig heads is a great idea!
-
Great job, what time do we eat?
-
I did share :P. Cleaned all the fish the next morning, then took half to the other guys. The wife and I had a fish fry last night, then fish sandwiches for lunch today. She's making a fish chowder for tonight with some ramps we picked Sunday. I'd say that went a long way for a few hours fishing. Got some bonus thank you's from the guys today! Fun outing for sure. I've been stuck machining since ice fishing.
