Title: BASS LAKE
Post by: abishop on Jul 27, 2022, 12:02 PM
I know that this topic is like beating a dead dog. The question I have is: has anybody been there lately? Was wondering if the lake is still as shallow as it was last year. With lake Michigan on hold I am thinking about giving it a try. Got walleye???

I also will be curious to know especially with Koontz lake launch shut down for now. I'll be curious if there is enough depth to launch at Bass.  I drove around the south shore of Bass today, coming home from Culver and was surprised at the number of houses for sale and also the old marina commercial parcel is for sale.  Things are and will forever be changing...

Did you make it to Bass AL and how was the water level and the fishing?

Not yet. Not sure what plans are for tomorrow yet. Might just wait till after Labor Day. I know with all the people trying for I more day before summer season is over. Next week 4 sure. Bait shop said she measured a 27-inch walleye last Sunday. I did see a pic of 3 nice limits of perch taken out in 50 fow. Took 3 hrs. Big north winds coming Sunday so that will be out of the question for a bit longer. Give me a little time to check out the dead sea. lol

Have to see for myself, if the sea is dead. Let you know after, providing there is a report to share.

Got 3 white bass, 3 crappie one 13 incher and a flathead cat. Nice day to be out on water. No wind. Have to fix my trolling motor. Propeller won't turn will spin side to side, no forward. Guessing the rain is the culprit. Glad there is a Minn Kota repair shop only a few miles away. No walleye. NEXT TIME. At least enough for a meal, GOOD DAY.

Not a lot to trolling motors. If you want to save some cash just youtube it. I'd start with the brushes. Minnkota's are notorious for the prop seal going bad and letting water corrode the brushes.
I'd also use caution with that " authorized " Minnkota repairman. My buddy had his there multiple times for a short.  Several parts were thrown at it with no fix. Tore into it himself and found the wires running through the shaft were worn through.

My motor isn't only 1 1/2 yrs. old with less than 20 of run time. Have taken my Minn Kota products too Rich for the past 25 years. Very reliable and reasonable. Taking boat over there in an hour. He will fix the issue on spot. Can't beat that with a stick?

Another bad battery. Glad it was a simple fix and not a motor issue. No charge.

Lead acid batteries suck. No matter how good I take care of them, I get 3 to 5 years tops.  And I have 3. About to make the switch to lithium.

Optima, I own 3. This 1 was bought about 3 years ago. I had 1 last 10 yrs. Buddy of mine has 1 for 12 years and still holding a charge. Wish I held on to the receipt because I think they have a 36-month guarantee. I am going to unhook it in the morning and put the charger directly on it, instead of using the trickle charge on boat. Then, taking it to get a true bench check before I go out and put another 300 into another one. Not something that needs to be addressed right away. I had 2 hooked up in parallel to get more reserve minutes. All I need to do is change a few wires around. Quick, cheap fix.

Wasn't bad where I went. Stayed away from the shallow areas. Next time I will be able to slow troll and I will strike gold. I truly miss Shirley. They even took down the sign.

2 feet all the way past marina. Only got a bit tricky by the buoys just before the beach area, Sand bar touched bottom for a second 1 foot.

I have fished it the last two nights , with one fish to show out of two nights ! Water is super staind . About 3 inches of visabilty. Alot of weeds floating as well . From gull point to the ramp 90 percent of what i found was 1.5 to 1.2 .motor touched quite a few times coming in both nights. Ypu can stay towards marina and go around in a lil deeper water bit the ski bouys at night can make a mess of a motor so i do the strait shot back after dark.

One thing is for certain, THE WEATHERMEN ARE NEVER RIGHT. There was supposed to be light winds this morning less than 10 mph. When we arrived just after 7 the winds were probably 20 mph. Tough day. I did score a keeper eye on a crawler harness and a couple crappies. We were the only boat on the water. After 3 hours we were frozen and called uncle.
