rosie red minnows

anyone ever fish with these guys heard of them and that the crappie love them but didnt want to waste my time if they werent as good as i heard and how hard are they to keep alive

I have used them a couple times and I have had mixed results. Last year in Missouri using
rosie red minnow's, we cought 40+ Crappie in a afternoon.

All they are is red fatheads. All fish will hit them.

i heard all u half to do is put red clay in the warer over night or somthing like that

I love using rosies on the ice for perch, caught a few lakers on them too. Just a red fathead, boy they out fish reg. fatheads, must be the color.

well guys used them the first time last nite with mike caught what we are pretty sure are shad gills and some monster crappie lost a few they were really  small and i missed quiet a few i will be using them again

i have read that and noticed it with red hooks to gold but it doesnt always work just like everything else

I Had just posted something about these minnows in the Ontario thread.

I had been down to Cabella's and saw them for the first time.

I have never seen them in Ontario. I am in the process of finding out if we can get them up here. ( or if they are legal) Heard a romour a bait shop close to home had them once.

I Just found them so unusual. I wondered how they might work and with what types of fish.

It is actually quite a strange thing in nature the way color affects a predator's appetite.  For most predators, the color red is a warning that the prey animal is either poisonous or venomous etc. and should be avoided at all costs.

With fish, I think you are correct on this.  The flash of red with the wobble and irregular pattern of your lure darting through the water triggers predatory fish into chasing becuase they think it is wounded and dying prey that they are seeing.  I imagine that the flash of red they see is kind of like a blood trail and really drives them into feeding frenzies!

I have noticed that when trolling for lakers and salmon, using a red hook with live shiners/smelt gets far more attention than a plain bronze hook.  The same goes for streamer pattern flies.  Put a little bit of red yarn for a tail or red hackle in the streamer and you will be guaranteed to hook up!

Did you know that after about 10' of water all the red light is filtered out and it appears greenish black?
