I just started tying this spring.  I'll never forget the first fish on a fly I tied.  It was a small 10" brown on a size 14 bead head prince nymph.  I was out in the rain fishing alone.  Just a great feeling!

Thanks Lance,
It's what we humans do.......evolve.

Well......most of us anyway ;D

My first fish on a fly was a rock bass.

Mine was a brookie up by the sportsmans club in Highmarket . Pops used to belong to a hunting club up there , and we used to go up there in the fall before the season opened to do wood . I got it on a san juan worm , Dad kept the pic in his wallet for years ....... I'd love to see that memory again  :'( .... i seem to remember a res. up that way with a big dam , below the dam used to produce rainbows as memory serves I'm gonna have to take a lil trip down memory lane sometime .

My first on fly I tied myself happened the first week of December. We had just had a 4" snowfall that was fast melting dropping the river to about 33 degrees.  At least it felt that way to my wader clad legs.  This was before neoprene waders.   I cast my Hornberg next a line of bushes on the river's edge and a 10" brown trout took the fly off the surface before it had a chance to break the surface tension.

That was 31 years ago.  I'm still tieing and still enjoying fly fishing.  I'm now volunteering at a local VA hospital teaching veterans how to tie flies.

Everyone believes in something.  I believe I'll go fishing.

What a first class way to pay it forward Moertrout. To me, it's a fly fisher's imperative to pass along the joys of tying and fly fishing.

I like the "first fish on a fly" theme.

tying  your  own  flies   adds a  new   side  to fishing  ,  nothing  better  then a  good  take  on your  own  fly!  it  becomes a  extension  of  your  fishing ,you seem the  type  that will truely enjoy  it  ...  good  luck  and  if  you need any help  with anything  let us  know   ;D

Here's some pics of some recent work. My first fish on a fly was a small native colorful  Brookie in early Spring on a tiny midge and then a bead head caddis puppa. Both flies landed me about 9 trout that day all under 14". Some Rainbows were mixed in and a creek chubb too!

Tied up a couple more tube flies tonight.  I have limit supplies with me at work so I am using a lot of the same colors. First one is an olive & black intruder with peacock herl instead of ostrich. I'm not sure how this will swim yet. The 2nd one is using some purple bait fish emulator with a collar of ostrich the one of marabou with a sonic cone to finish it off. The sonic cone is not weighted but has holes in it to let water thru it to work the marabou.  It swims very nice.  I can't wait to try this one out.  ;D
