You hit that nail square Red. Fly tying is a progression. Start with the tried and true and then it just naturally seems to lead to innovation. Tried and True will teach the fundamentals needed to experiment. Then it's "Katie Bar The Door!"

Jay,
The UV stuff has a bunch of possibilities. The Loon UV light is pretty weak for the price. I just ordered a more powerful light. First thing I did was top off some Copper John nymphs. Worked perfectly. The drop on top cured in about 5 seconds to a hard clear finish. So far so good!

Yeah...an old fart over the edge ;D

Pretty cool though...aren't they? I've got some tied with mono loops fore and aft to use as indicators with nymphs. They attach with a loop to loop at the head and then run the tag end through the back loop and attach the nymph. The move up and down to change the depth by loosening the front loop.

Can't wait to really test them.

RG, what size are they? I think they're cool!

The hoppers are on a TMC 100 #10.

I've also been playing around with the Loon UV  cure Acrylic.

I'm liking the UV stuff. Time to go a little crazy with it.

Yeah, They're a fun tie. Lots of stuff going on there. That's a "Thunder Thighs" pattern I found online.

When I think back to when I first started tying, some 30 years ago, the only references I had were store bought flies and the Orvis "Guide to tying flies". The patterns that I can find online are ridiculous.

Those ants will not work as a dropper under them hoppers....

It is pretty amazing the resources available on-line these days. A guy can learn how to do just about anything...
It was exactly 30 years ago I bugged a gentleman into showing me how he tied bucktails.
Turns out Tank had all his uncles flytying tools - vice and bobbin. Im still useing that old DH Thompson vice today. Was kinda neat when I saw one on display at the FF Museum a few years ago...
Anyways, alot of trial, error, and ugly flies later...  8)
