trolling rods?

muskyfan51:
for $30 a reel you could get the okuma trolling reel and have it shipped to your local store within a few days then you would be able to hold more line. I think that's pretty much the only difference between the baitcast and maybe the gear ratio. The Shakespeare only holds 160 yards opposed to the okuma that holds 420

UFCreel:
Ugly stix for trolling rods. The Okuma or Daiwa counter reels are good.

Mac Attack:
You can use any rod on a downrigger.
Theoretically, you could even use a short ice fishing rod.

But wouldn't you want to match the rod to what you are trolling for?
My walleye rods can be used for king salmon but they really are a bit light.
I do however use them in the spring for in-shore browns.

Personally, I like an 8.5' rod for rigger fishing.
It allows for a nice bend in the rod when set.
Who's you use is your call.
But I like the mention of the Ugly Stix.
I don't think there's a better built rod on the market for the money.
But that's just me.

Good luck.
