yup

I know - not the right thread, but I'm lazy today.
At least lazier than normal.

Anyway, Jeff and I are thinking about heading down to this in a couple/few weeks.

If you find any interesting wood blanks, remember you have a friend with a lathe ;)

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Yea, my son has 2.

You need to see some of the work he is doing.
The wood he is using for the reel seats it's crazy.
I'll get some photos and post them here later tonight.

Hay rg have you tried buffing wood ever ?? If not I just picked up a buffer at menards that is on clearence for $65 right now .. just got done polishing my rod holders with it .. polished emt tubing lol's look like chrome lol's tubeing welded to a c clamp now.. also did my buddies too... ended out getting 11%back in rebates on top of the clearence price.. any how just a suggestion to try buffing some wood?? I bet those chess pieces would look even better if buffed to a real high shine.. or even reel seats rod handles etc buffed to a high shine..

by the way the chess board is coming along nicely!!

Thanks Boon. Yeah, I've sanded, finished, polished, buffed, burnished, textured, scraped, planed and done just about everything one could do to wood to make it shine.

The chess pieces are finished the way I want them to look. I like the grain, natural look and textures of wood. They're sanded and finished to expose the hard and soft features of each piece.

Love to see some pics Mac!

For those of you out there that don't know - click on the thumbnail photo and a new window opens with a larger view.
And in that new window you can enlarge it again.
Doing so you will be able to see the grain and dyes in the wood.

Enjoy!

Can't wait for my 2 rods to be done.

Nice looking stuff. He ought to spend $80 and buy a little Harbor Freight bench top wood lathe.

Could most likely get a 20% off coupon for it online. That and a few cheap turning tools would make turning seats and handles a lot easier. Save a lot of mess on his wrapper too.

And....please tell me he's not working on the floor!

I told you.
He already has two lathes.
Look back a few posts.

But thanks Bob.

BTW, he also has a small table router that he uses to carve out the trough for the reel base.
He has quite the setup.

Now..........if I could only get him to move everything into an apartment someplace.
 ;)

I didn't catch that Mac.
Does he dye and stabilize his own blanks or does he buy them  that way?

He buys them dyed
It’s done in a vacuum system so the dye penetrates all the way thru the wood
Really cool

He has a few suppliers

So if anyone out there is interested shoot me a pm.  And I’ll get you in touch with Jeff.  He’s really doing some nice work.  The photos don’t do it any justice.  They look way better than they do in the photos.

Jeff is a member here on MFF but only stops in occasionally.
