Use it up! Might think about reinforcing corners inside with maybe some 1/2” or 3/4” square stock. May not last forever, but none of them do.

Super kids project. They get to work with Dad and watch the birds move into their creations. There’s a million and one things you can do with bird houses and they’re all fun.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Yes use it up a little glue and Brad nails will work fine. I always use scrap wood for bird houses and other small projects.

Looking forward to the project, thanks for everyone input. I’ll make sure I post some pics once started, likely not until next weekend though

Not really a wood shop project but I did refinish my grandfather's spoon auger. It was just sitting around getting really rusted. Gramp would have never let it get that way

That’s a good wall hanger. Looks good. Gramps would be happy.

Thanks rg. I'll probably take it out early ice next year. Gramp would want it back on the ice atleast a couple times. Do you happen to know an effective method of sharpening? I was thinking a small whetstone. Or maybe a chainsaw file. Tough to follow the curve with a flat file and no way I would use an angle grinder

Well, my sense tells me to never touch the outside of the auger. I can’t say what angle of bevel will work best, but 90 degrees is a good start. Works for scissors.  How to set it up for sharpening would be the next challenge. I’d think the two surfaces would want to be parallel, kind of like a Forstner Wood bit (something I have a good deal of experience with).

In any event, I don’t think they cut all that  great to begin with so don’t set your expectations too high.

Thanks for the input. It cuts ice now I could try to dress up the edge a bit or just leave as is. More a sentimental piece anyway. Just figured gramp would want it used.....

Bet he’d be happy to see it on the wall and respected. I know I would.
