Fish of 10000 casts...on a fly.
« on: Sep 08, 2020, 07:49 PM »
Got really lucky today and landed a decent tiger musky on the 10 weight!  Not a giant but this lake doesn't have giants yet, they were stocked a couple years ago.

Congratulations!  You're first musky on a fly rod, I presume?

Tigers are really cool looking fish. I mounted a few back in the days when our state planted them. They stopped planting them citing poor returns.

I bet that was fun on a fly rod! Congrats.

Yes it was the first on the fly rod.  Visual strike too and an odd hook up.  The fish followed all the way in.  My buddy had already nailed a pike with a quick direction change at the boat, so I did the same when the musky followed.  He hit but flossed himself with the steel leader, then when he turned to run I set the hook in the side of his face.  Quite the explosion there after and a couple of leaps but was able to land and safely release.

Later in the evening I played with conventional gear and landed one smaller pike and one decent one.

Great work Jon.  A little redemption must have felt nice after our trip was cut short.

New prop performs better than the last one, the cupping seems to be better.  So between that and watching the tiger eat...I'd say it was great redemption!

That’s sweet! Do the tigers get as big as the natural Muskie?

My personal best is 45" and over 20lb on ice.  I think they get roughly as big as are largest pike in New England.  I dont think they get to 40-50lbs like pure strain musky...but they get big.  The fishery these tigers are in is brand new and will hopefully become a trophy fishery in a few years.

I'm sure you'll get one.  I saw the pike you caught this season.  Respectable beasts.  I only had followers of that size...but didn't throw meat.  I save that for before ice up.
