Summer '04 pics
« on: Feb 20, 2005, 11:21 AM »
Finally found some time to go through my pics from this past summer. Here are a few pics of me and my son catching his first halibut by himself. ;D

He caught a couple of nice eaters, 25-35 lbs

And then Moma's pole took off,  she knew better than to even try picking the rod up the way it was smoking out line!  A little while later we were able to get this one up to the surface for some pics and a quick measurement, somewhere around 7 feet + putting it around 300lbs.  Then we turned her loose. ;D

It's in SE AK.  We let her go for a few reasons, one because those big ones are females full of eggs, and two, the smaller ones are better eating, and three, I  really didn't want to wrestle something that big over the side. ;D

Akdg is right on the money. A big halibut's flesh is not as oily as a smaller one but the biggest difference is the texture. Huge halibut flesh is really tough and rubbery while 20-40 pounder are extremely tender.

I've never been to heaven, but i have fished  in  Alaska.

I just heard something on the radio a few days ago that some guy up North someplace caught a 300# Hally and the only way to get it home was to tow it with his boat. I will try to find it.

Nice fish.  ;)

now those are some giant bluegill ;) I hope they tasted as good as I hear they do. Did you filet them yourself or did you send them to a butcher?

Halibut are a lot easier to fillet than you would think.

300 pounds is a lot more flopping around in the boat than Id like to handle especially when they are 80% muscle, one could easily break your leg.   Anyways it is good to see the big ones go back too.     Nice one for your sons first halibut too.    Think my first one weighed all of one pound.
