Need suggestions
« on: Jul 11, 2018, 11:35 AM »
Headed up to NW Indiana southern/MI for a long weekend with wife. Booked a room in La Porte for Friday night the 27th and would like to hear any suggestions for things to do or see in the area that's not on the regular list of attractions like the mall or casino. We'll be there from early morning until early Saturday before moving north up to St Joe for a few hrs then on up north for the evening and Sunday morning. Any good local dinning suggestions besides the chain steak houses. I'll check out the lakes for a possible ice fishing trip this winter.

If you like Mexican , El braceros across from Pine Lake on Pine Lake Ave has excellent food. Also Third Base Bar and Grill right next to it has really good food too with nice outside dining. Other than that it's either fishing or going bowling for things to do LOL

Much Mas is a really good place to eat in LaPorte there on the main drag. If you haven't been to Mt Baldy in Michigan City I would recommend that. You will probably go through New Buffalo which has Redamaks (local legion), a great burger place with lots of tradition. Just a few option...

no trip to NWI is complete with out stopping at Albaneese candy in Merriville, a little out of the way though. Laporte is a very small place so not much to check out. Pine lake is always good fishing. and Kingsbury fish and wildlife area isn't too far out of the way.

Kingsbury can have some nice viewing. Maybe some sandhills at Tamarak Lake. Come off SR 104 for that.  There is a water ski group in LaPorte that puts on free shows. I will check next week when in town for the dates.  A walk around Clear Lake if you just want to take it easy. It is right behind Kroger.

Michigan City: I like walking piers anywhere and the pier there isn't bad. Sit and watch the sun set. Lights of Chicago in the distance. The glow of Portage when they pour the steel.  A little early to watch the fish jump the lamprey barrier.

Have a good time.
