Seen a bunch of crows pecking at something on the lawn and realized it was alive. I went out and it was an owl, it was a little bugger, maybe 6"-8" tall. At first I thought it was a baby owl, couldn't fly or move much, so I grabbed a laundry basket to put over it to protect it. I called the DEC, they said they would be there. While waiting I checked my Peterson Field Guide of Eastern Birds and thought it could be a Screech Owl? When the DEC Officer showed up he checked it out and wasn't sure? The Owl was taken to a Bird Rehabilitation Guy, surprisingly he was fairly nearby. Hope to hear how the little bugger made out. Seeing an Owl during the day is suppose to be an omen... since I rescued the little bugger, I'm hoping it is a good omen!

Good Karma for you bud!
I did that many years ago. Was working up north repairing parking lot lights when I saw a small owl sitting on the hood of my truck. It was very calm and needed some help. I searched around for a bit to try to find its home but to no avail. So I called the DEC and they gave me the name and location of a local wildlife rehab center. I boxed it up and delivered it. Hopefully it's back where it belongs.

Very cool Bart....

Good work Bart crows do not like birds of prey(raptors) and will gang up on them especially if the bird of prey is near a nest with young crows. I'm not sure when crows breed and raise their young but if it is this time of year the crows try and chase off the owl. If the owl had ear turfts and given your height estimate it falls into the height range for the Eastern Screech Owl. Hope it recovers from any injuries and that you are able to be there when the owl is released back into the wild.
I purchased note cards years back with drawings of different owls species and still have a card for the Eastern Screech Owl. taking what info. I posted from the card.
May you be rewarded with good fishing for your act of kindness. Thank you for the photos.

Thanks for sharing Bart. That is really cool!

That's awesome

Good on you for saving it from the thugs. Crows are brutal. Could be a barred owl, very common in this area.

Any update on it yet

I haven't check yet, probably Wednesday or Thursday I give the DEC a call, couldn't find the Bird Rehab Guy?

This owl had small ear tufts, pretty small and I thought it may have had its primary flight feathers? DEC Officer didn't think they were primary flight feathers? So... ? Hope to get an answer when I give him a call.
Crows are brutal, they do put a beaten of the song bird hatchlings for sure.
I did get a picture of a Barred Owl while Turkey hunting a few years back though.

A DEC officer didn't know what kind of owl it was? I would think he should. If I was him I'd bone up on owl identification.

I went through my Bird Book and he did a check with his Bird Book... he was leaning towards it being a young owl, but he wasn't sure? I was leaning towards a Screech Owl, but not sure? We didn't take a lot of time on ID with an injured bird too, so not sure? I can probably count all the owls I have seen in my entire life on one hand and he probably doesn't get a lot of Owl Calls, I wouldn't hold it against him. Hope to get a update soon...

I still think he should be able to identify any wildlife he comes across, but no I'm not being too hard on him.
On a funny note once had a bait store owner ask me to do a turkey tail from a road kill for him. Decided to call a C.O. to find out if it was legal out of season. Instead of answering my question he wanted to know my location. I knew what the jig was and hung up right away. This was before caller I.D. I took the tail back to the bait store told him what had happened and he better get rid of it!

taxid, sounds like you got lucky. DEC Officers may not be Biologists... but they do know the Law!

And some of them are dicks.

I called the DEC Officer, hasn't called back yet... I'll give him a week and call again?
-

I gave up on reporting violations in my state. Typically they don't get back to you for several days which is too late.

I had a trap stolen and wanted to report it, nobody ever contacted me back?
There is a "Report Your Furbearer Sightings!" such as bobcat, otter, fisher, weasel and snowshoe hare to help biologist understanding the distribution and abundance of these elusive or inconspicuous mammals. I did a couple of times, got no acknowledgment or any feed back which soever, don't bother any more...
Sure would like to find out what kind of owl it was or what the prognosis is, we'll see?

Guess I’m lucky I know a few officers that check things out when called about violations
