Title: Johnny Appleseed Dam
Post by: Hankfan24 on Mar 15, 2018, 08:12 AM
I fished below the dam Wednesday evening. It was slow there so I moved down to the boat launch, and caught a few suckers. No saugeye to report, but still fun.

Walleye over 21” from there are on the do not eat list, and under 21” 1 meal every 2 months. It in the regulations. Fun place to fish but would never eat anything from it.

Yes, this is a catch and release place. Also, keep an eye on your vehicle, and don't leave anything valuable in the bed of your truck.

A black bucktail jig tipped with a minnow works here sometimes.

Fished Appleseed after work. 1 25 inch northern, 2 saugeyes that were short.. Lots of people there today with the nice weather. One young man caught two beautiful walleyes, and through them back much to the dismay of his neighbors. He told them they shouldn't be eating the fish here anyway. I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.

lol i get that when i toss the catfish back there too.  why people would want to eat an 8# channel cat ill never know. yuk   seen a lot of people down there this weekend so i went on down river a bit farther.  the st marys river is full of saugers.  there are a couple rock dams and several bridge areas, that offer current breaks, to jig around.

Cool. At Appleseed, most everyone who caught fish were floating minnows.

I fished Appleseed today for a couple hours, not even a bite. Didn't see any fish caught by other people either. The water is way way down. I have caught a few saugeyes there this year and have seen them caught too. I think the low water and cold nights shut the run down. Early next week looks promising.

It has been me experience that sauger bite in fast waters. More so than walleye. Just me 2 cents. lol

Fished appleseed after work. Threw everything I had at them with no luck. Hopefully this rain blowing in will pick things up a bit.

Fished Appleseed yesterday, not a saugeye to report. Caught a sick looking bass, and a drum. Speaking of drums, some guy brought a 5 piece drum set, set it up at the boat launch, and was banging away. I've seen people playing a guitar by the river before, but never an entire drum set.

Enjoy reading your posts on the catches you are getting.  I grew up a block south of the river near there.  My brother and I played along the river and fished it for years.  I can tell you that 55+ years ago there were never any fish in there like what you are catching there now.  All we ever caught or speared were catfish, carp, and shad.  Used to take my wife for picnics at City Utilities park when we would visit my mom the last several years.  Lots of memories.  Doubt if I go back much since we sold my mom's house last year due to her death.   Hope you keep catching good ones there.

I'll have to meet you over there sometime, just a couple minutes from the house.  Should be good after this weather straightens out.

Fished the dam, the water conditions have cleared up, but still no saugeyes. Did see a few crappie caught on the sandbar.

Did you try right along the break wall? After dark is best.

No, I was near the sandbar. I was told not to hang around down there after dark, but if that's what it takes I guess. Lol

I don't think you'll have any problem at JA after dark, down on Anthony would be a different story.

Lower water levels means more concentrated fish.

Thanks for posting. That's very interesting. Maybe I can wade down there and get some of my lures back! Lol

I read that too. But with  more than 2” of rain up north, I wonder if they can keep this schedule. I was going to take the boat out today till I saw this wind.

That's wild...Sounds like a shooting fish in a barrel situation...I hear ya Hankfan24.....theres probably a lead sinker lined :clapping: bottom , and a thousand tackle boxes worth of lures down there built up through the years.
