A Local Tune-Up, Then a Road Trip
« on: Nov 16, 2017, 07:59 AM »
I like to fit in a solid local trip before heading out on the road.  If my last local trip was any indication, I'd be firing on all 8 cylinders when I headed to NY.

My tune-up trip was a revisit of several splake spots where I'd hit a PB the week before.  With similar onshore winds, the bite was off the charts.  43 splake blew away my recent PB of 19, and I came up with a few bonus browns.

On to NY.  Unfortunately, my tune-up didn't hold up.  The early Arctic blast didn't help.  I fished for a bite or 2 a day, but was able to keep enough quality fish pinned for a few highlights.  Pictures were tough solo with sketchy footing and deep, swift cold water always a slip away.

The scenery and power of the mighty Niagara are hard to beat.

I often found myself in high water caught between a rock and a cold, swift spot.

Somehow, these guys manage to scrape out a living down here.

When the trail takes me past this spot, I pause.  I fell down this slope after an ice storm in 1990.  Even my cleats couldn't hold me.  I smashed into one of these trees and managed to stay out of the drink.  My shoulder still feels that tumble, but I made it.  2 guys just down river weren't so lucky around the same time-frame.

A selfie of a guy showing wear and tear at the end of a long day ;D

great report Jim! nice maine fish but really like the steelhead? and togue.  Man, that looks like some serious rapids in the Niagara, I'd be a little nervous stepping in there.

Thanks, Randall.  Yes, steelhead.  Wild jumpers.

Not a whole lot of wading going on in there ;)

Always a great report as usual Jim. Nice fish but you're pretty "gutsy" to be fooling around in those swift rapids, a far cry from your usual spots that are barely knee deep. :)

Jim, You keep breaking records! Congratz on the splake and Brown’s. Always nice to do road trips to fish different species. Great post as usual.
