Going to try the Big Lake for perch tomorrow, may not see a fish but we must fish when we can. lol
Deciding which Port of disappointment will be the worst and then go to the other lol.
Either MC or Portage.
-
Good luck Tom. Heard Gary light 50-54 fow. Couple weeks old. I am hoping they come into Cal Harbor soon. I like fishing the weed beds throwing spinners with soft shells. Haven't had much luck the past couple years. THIS IS THE YEAR. Remember the pics. Have fun, (remember the fly repellant and sun screen). LOL.
-
Going to be a scorcher tomorrow. DNR says 40-50 ft out of Portage is producing a few. Put out a crawler or shrimp on a bobber may get a steelhead to give you a ride. I'll be out Sunday morning. Good luck
-
Also. Keep an eye on the radar. May be strong storms in the afternoon
-
Thanks guys, were going to try out of M.C., heading out there early and get off early.
Its been a tough one but we want to fish lol
I'll post, there saying 3 to 5 ftrs sunday, north winds.
-
Not the best forecast Sunday but only time off..probably jump in a boat much bigger than mine if my buddy is down to fish. Let us know how today is
-
Looked like a nice mess on the table there Tom. What was the magic depth? What was the average 11? How were the flies? NICE JOB, CONGRATS. Hoping to give it a try sometime later next week.

Had a great day with the son and grandson. Black ditch 22 to 28 ft with 24 or 25 ft being the best. Wind was a pretty steady blow this morning pushing us at about 1mph which we thought was bad but actually was doing the trick. Very few pods or schools, had to find the holes and cracks and continue the drifts over and over.
Lots of gobies and dinks, but them Perch all had gobies in them so thats a great thing and there finding a new food supply. 8 to 12 inch was the size most 10 inch as a guess. Wind laid down and went flat on us and the bite pretty much died with it. Bass Pro Perch rigs with minnows , glow in the dark ones seemed to do best. Fished from 7:30 to 1pm and could take the heat so we headed in, but what a great day with the boys.

We figured who ever was there was on fish, if we wouldn't of found some by the ditch we were coming back your way lol.
Bite was slow but steady when we hit the small holes that were trenchs we got hits. Almost came back your way. Wind died about 11:30 or 12:00 and it got hot. We didn't think we would do that well with no real reports, but wanted to try the new boat on the Big Pond and the Grandsons first of many voyages on the Big lake and he loved it.
Tom

great family fun! over an hour drive for me, so not worth it. keep at it with the kid dad, you doing good. :clapping:
-
Great report, and it looks like the grandson had a nice time.
-
Nice boat I'm jealous. Hooker..well worth the hour + drive. Maybe just wait a week or two and it will be on like donkey Kong. Double jumbo every drift is awesome and perch is 22$ a pound $$$
-

Oh its about an hour drive for me coming from Rensselaer to there, but its always a good time. just need hot nasty days with them south winds.
-
Looking to give it a go on monday after the hot steamy week end if anyone goes over the week end please give a general report its a two hour drive for me I usually try my baldy or blacks ditch
-
I'm on call this weekend but I'm sure someone will report.
-
We have a couple days with north winds but then next week looks like south winds, hot and excellent perch weather. Hopefully some warmer water will be blown in with the north winds. If we get some warmer water the soft shells will be HOT...
-
for some i guess its the adventure of "the big lake". from a fishing standpoint its not worth the drive for, what ten perch? only need to drive a few miles from here for better fishing and no limits. plenty of 10-12" perch inland.
-
Never seen a bass sized perch inland indiana. Maybe I don't Fish the right spot. Nothing like a 2 hook rig bending your rod. Yellow lake is 22$ a pound last I checked
-
13, 14 inch sometimes. More for us is the way I look at it.
Have fun.
-
Who's going Sunday hopefully the winds stay south and storms
-
Hoping the wife doesn't have any plans for tomorrow. I would like to target some perch. Has anyone been out lately? And if so, what depth and where? Anyone heard anything about Cal Park and the weed beds yet?

That is a brute. I would like to get a few that big so I could make a stringer with 4-5 fish. By the way what does that fish weigh 24 ozs.????

The 15 inchers this year went from 1 lb. 10 1/4 ounces (26 1/4 ounces) to 2 lbs. 2 oz (34 ounces). Weighed on a certified scale. For those of you that don't know I hatch these fish in one of my ponds, bring then inside and train them to feed on artificial feed and keep them inside until the following spring. They are then placed in a holding pond and fed for another year until the following spring when I can easily tell the males from the females. Then only the females go into the trophy perch and bluegill pond, and are harvested when they reach a minimum of 14 inches.
Not the same as fishing public waters and I don't claim it to be. It's a business where I sell them to taxidermists. I have and do allow folks to help me harvest them via hook and line just before they drop their eggs, but also use a large seine. Some want to have their biggest mounted which is fine too.
Biggest so far was 16 1/4 inches and 2 lbs. 13 ounces. 5 ounces bigger than the state record. Haven't harvested a 16 incher since.
The following were harvested this spring.

Sorry messed first post up. That is just mind blowing! Must feel good to raise perch that size!
-
Just want to say my apologies if I hijacked this thread. ::)
It was not my intention.
-

Thanks for the kind words. It gets pretty involved but is a nice diversion from the taxidermy that can be very labor intensive at times.
-
Couldn't get away just wondering if anyone went out and how the bite was
-
I wonder myself? Id like to get out there this week, good or spotty. Dont really care. Just wanna be out without the weekend traffic.
-
Our best depth for size was 38-40' but that was 3 weeks ago. A little west of the MC pier is on fire!! ;)
-
Fished Mi. Cty on 6/25 we went to Mt.Baldy / Black Ditch area marked many fish but not many biters. But did get 1- 13-1/4 ended up with 6 total. Caught the 13" in 28 ft.
-
Gonna try weds. heard same thing about west of mich city. Also heard from 20'-40'.
-
You guys think the bite will slow down with these north winds the next few days and lower temps?
-
I thought we need south winds so the cooler water filters in north winds blow the warm water back into shore?
-
Thats why i ask. Far from a successful perch fisherman.
-
Anyone know the water temp??? I always thought they got closer to shore when the surface temps got close to 70 degrees.
-
67-68 degrees
-
Saw Michigan city area was 71 yesterday. That's probably gonna change after today.
-
http://greatlakesbuoys.org/
look at the water temp from top to bottom whenever you want
-

That is how I thought as well. The north winds would carry the warmer waters back closer to shore being on the surface (top). Just my 2 cents. Am I right thinking this????
-
Definitely going tomorrow hopefully they will be roaming around if not blue chip casino Any one else trying tomorrow?
-
I have this thing called work that always gets in my way lol.
-
The perch beat me down today also the storms marked a lot of schools no takers caught 5 all small
-
Was working at arcelor mittal in burns harbor today and I didn't see 1 boat out perching. Cant get a report on cal park from Mclurch anymore. I MISS THOSE REPORTS.
-
Well if burns harbor was as dead as Michigan city it stands to reason no one was out .the line of storms probably scared some from going out I ventured out about 730 am
-
Forgot to mention there was only one other boat out in Michigan city harbor waves 3ft some close to 4 which didn't help
-
Weather like we've been having does not make for Perch fishing lol.
Need a few days of good hot south or south west winds.
Hopefully we got a bite for july 23rd Perch Derby, sometimes its rough.
-

Al is it Burns Harbor where you can get a pass to fish the lake from the Harbor there? I've heard theres good fishing from there?
Check it out.
-
I DONT THINK SO. I KNOW YOU CAN FISH OFF THE ROCKS AT PASTRICK MARINA.
-
Perch don't like warm water. The perch I raise are descendants of Lake Erie fish. This time of year the big ones just sulk at the bottom and most won't come up for pellets.

My buddy gets his jumbos early spring out from New Buffalo ;)
-
The fish are around, usually deeper waters.
Never give up the chase lol.
Soon guys soon.

Mine come from my front yard. ;D
-
Thought about making a trip up to MC this weekend to search for some perch. Where is the best location to pick up some minnows early in the morning near MC?
-
at chiefs bait shop, on rt 12 half mile west of prime outlets mall (lighthouse mall). good luck its been tough fishing lately
-
Great, thanks. I haven't been on the lake in 6 or 7 years and it's been even longer since I have perch fished on LM. Needless to say my expectations are pretty low, just looking to get out on the big lake.
-
Good luck. Try fishing the troughs close to shore where it drops off to around 20 feet. Heard they have been pulling a few from this area. There areas could be only 30-100 feet off shore. Good looking lab by the way. mine is 120 pounds and he still thinks he is a lap dog. Got to love them.
-
Thanks for the tip.
That picture was from 2005, he is now 11. His body is failing, but his heart is still there. First two years were a little rough, but he has been a great dog.
-
Caught a few. Windy, even with the south winds there was a strong chop. We were struggling to hold, had to use anchor combined with the trolling motor. I will be bringing different anchor next time. We only fished 2 hours, thunderstorm pushed us off. We probably could have had a 2 man limit or real close. Nothing too big, 1 that hit 12, majority were 9 or 10. Kept a couple dinks that swallowed the hook. Had fun, hadn't been on the big lake in a few years.

Nothing beats a fresh fried perch dinner. Where did you end up fishing? How deep and where did u launch from?
-
Heard a few good reports from sat myself. Tuff fishing but they got 8 before being pushed off the lake but at least they got out.
Al all I can say is go west young man go west.
This weekend may be great.
-
Nice mess edge congrats.
-
Would like to hit Cal Park area. This is about as far west as you can go. Have you heard about anything from this area.
-
I was fishing just east of the lighthouse in Michigan City. 25-35ft.
-
sounded like both east and west of MC was producing this weekend. Heard of a handful of limits both days, and if the storms didn't chase folks off on Sunday, there would have been a lot more limits taken I think
-
Looks like some great weather for those doing the perch derby this coming weekend good luck to all who venture out I may try Friday it will be hot and hopefully the perch will be Hungery I wish I could repeat my trip from a couple years ago the perch were on fire from my baldy and to the west limits were being taken every where I had several that almost were 15 inches! They are an elusive but so addicting fish to cstch
-
Friends got 63 today out of New Buffalo and Cheifs in M. C. said their on fire.
South ends shaping up great for weekend guys.

Hoping to be off Thursday so I can get after some.

I got a question for you perch guys. I know on smaller inland lakes perch fishing after dark is never good, but what about on the big lake? Can you get perch after dark?
I went out monday afternoon and started down past beverly shores in about 40' and drifted in up to 15'. Caught 9 down that way all 8"-9". Then moved back to mt baldy and landed 3 more with the biggest going 11 1/2". I moved back down to beverly shores again to see if i could get some better numbers but a fellow fisherman had ignition problems so I towed him back to trail creek marina. It was a long slow pull but the 40hp Merc did just fine. All fish were caught in the 30'-35' range for me.
-
Anyone go today just curious to see if it was any good ,I'm going in the morning regardless hope to get a limit
-

No they don't seem to want to bite after dark. Was catching them good till the sunset and they stopped like someone turned a light switch off
-
Good luck out there today. Make sure you bring plenty of water. They say could hit 115 with heat index. I have to work. One of these days.....
-
Friends got 63 again yesterday, its a good bite hope it last till the Perch Derby sat.
-
The only time I've ever caught perch at night was if I illuminated the water really well with a lantern. And that was in less than 10 feet of water.
-
Didn't do good at all ,caught a bunch of 7 inchers and marked quite a bit still great to be out .just wondering what most people use for bait .i use small shiners and maybe that's the problem ,I've used flatheads before with not much luck ,are shiners better
-
I was out last night in Michigan and marked a ton of fish, but not that many biters. Kept 20 between 2 guys in 2.5 hours. Had to leave before the evening bite though. Gotta hit the window right, especially during hot days with full moon
I think shiners are better than fatheads.
With cold water in close, that is a great thing for perch fishing - they dont want to be in 48 degree water, so it crams them all into 40 feet and shallower, where it is easy to find them
-
Go with the baby golden roach. Always better than a fathead. Never let me down
-
I agree with the baby shiners. Dont get to perch fish big lake much but always take rosies, baby shiners, and fatheads. Shiners alaays did the best!
-
I always try to take each kind, some days they like them big, some days they like them small, always LOVE the Roses when you can find them.
Sat looking good.
-
Just need some fresh reports from the perch derby to see if I should venture up that way the weather was ideal
-
So no one went to perch derby today hope to hear from some one
-
perching has been on fire, go fishing!
-
Had a HOT but great day on the Big Lake for some Perch.
Started off as a HOT day and continued getting HOTTER.
Great time with good friends and Family.
We ended up with 29 keeper Perch, probably 100's of dinks returned and no Gobies for our boat which some of the boats reported
a lot caught. Started off slow then it turned on for about 3 hrs or so and everyone around us was pulling fish, which is a good day of fun and catching. If you've never had a perch outing like this your missing a lot of fun but its hard to get a good perch trip like these
but it really turned out pretty good.My boys and Grandson had a blast and thats the most important part to me of any trip. Fished with
youngest son Andrew(his first Perching trip) but hes fished the lake for Salmon and Trout before and son Tom Jr. and Grandson Thomas III. When it got so hot we couldn't take it we would go for a swim. Jr got our biggest being 12 1/4 I believe but anyway a great day on the water with great memories and bringing the Grandson into this Great sport as a lifer lol.

Nice mess.....Looks like a blast, and great family memeories.
-
Always wanted to take my crappie rig and chase some perch with it. I'm jealous of all those tasty perch. Good job fellows.
-
We use Perch and Crappie rig from Bass Pro as our favorites. Get some of all colors, sometimes its just one color that produces. We make our own also.
-
Great report wallin .I had to work otherwise I would of been there ,looked like a blast ,I'm so addicted to those perch!
-
Made it out for a few hours saturday and sunday, just merely missing the storm by minutes saturday. Went out of trail creek marina and probably would have got soaked if i wasn't able to get under turning train bridge. Only kept 5 each day and let go a lot. I only kept anything over 10". Biggest went 11 1/2". Fished west out of the harbor mostly in front of the stone wall in anywhere from 12'-17'. It was fun but was a hot one!
Does anyone now what the big fish was for the perch derby?
-
I don't know about the perch derby, but Saturday we had 3 over 13, biggest was 14
Kept a 2 man limit of 70 and most were 8-10, a few 10-12, and the 3 jumbos
-
14 1/4 or 14 1/2 won the Derby.
Nice reports guys.
Had a friend go out of MC sunday and hammered 30 nice ones.
-
This bum knee of mine is keeping me out of my boat and Im really missing perchin this year. nice to see all the good reports fellas
-
Thanks Wallin! 14 1/4" or 14 1/2" are both dandy perch! I would love to get into some that size this year. This is my first year of actually having a little time to get out there and having tons of fun doing it.
High Flags, don't let that bummed knee get you behind on fishin'. That's just a good excuse to skip out on work for a day and get out there!
-
MC where were you fishing to get a2 man limit of 70 , hope that was a miss print.

I was thinkin the same thing.
I'll be out in the kayak in the morning (tuesday) fishing MC around the lighthouse and break walls, say hi or wave on your way in/out everyone

Michigan 35 limit daily, and Wisconsin I believe is 25. Indiana is only 15
-
Not a misprint, the limit is 35 in Michigan
-
Wisconsin is only 5 Al.
35 in Michigan guys.
That's why we go to New Buffalo ;D

Ahh okay, I was thinking it was 30

A buddy and I bass fished MC in the kayaks from 1030 to 330 and it was slow. I got the only bass, a largemouth of about 15 inches. Saw a few perch boats coming in, only talked to one. It was 3 guys and they said they had 20 to 25
-
Good report, might be some friends that were suppose to go out today.
Nice job on the Bass
-
Sorry MC, Did not no where you were fishing. Thought you were in Indiana waters.
-
Anyone heading out tomorrow? If I don't have to work, I am making the first excursion on the big lake this year in the morning. Need to find some yellow gold...
-
Not heard a word or seen anything about perching.
Good Luck.
-
Not surprising, the lake flipped and there is cold water in close. 62 surface temp on the beach this morning at Michigan City.
Flips tend to scatter the perch. I'd go trolling for skamania or kings myself, if I was fishing on the big lake

Be careful out there. Might be a little foggy. What time are you heading out?
Also, remember that the races are this weekend. The ramp at the park will be closed. Also, it looks like the course come close to the perching grounds.
-
Cant make it, have 2 work.
-
Been hearing good reports the last few days of jumbo limits east of MC. Softshell craw tails has been working best.
-
When are they suppose to close the ramp for the races? Probably not til Wednesday or Thursday right? I was gonna kayak there in the morning
-
I camped at the Dunes last weekend. I know the water was much warmer Thursday and Friday then it was saturday and sunday. We launched my kayak off of the beach one day and paddled straight out. I have never perch fished the big lake before, so didn't really know where to start. We didn't have any live bait, but did manage a couple of small ones on plastics. I would guess we were in 15-20' of water.
-
I think the closure is for Fri;Sat;Sun.
-
trail creek will be open, but expect a lot of traffic. heard of some steelhead caught off pier this morning. races will be east, may want to try west. good luck
