Post by: wallin on Jun 10, 2016, 12:15 PM
Going to try the Big Lake for perch tomorrow, may not see a fish but we must fish when we can. lol
Deciding which Port of disappointment will be the worst and then go to the other lol.
Either MC or Portage.

Good luck Tom. Heard Gary light 50-54 fow. Couple weeks old. I am hoping they come into Cal Harbor soon. I like fishing the weed beds throwing spinners with soft shells. Haven't had much luck the past couple years. THIS IS THE YEAR. Remember the pics. Have fun, (remember the fly repellant and sun screen). LOL.

Going to be a scorcher tomorrow.   DNR says 40-50 ft out of Portage is producing a few. Put out a crawler or shrimp on a bobber may get a steelhead to give you a ride.  I'll be out Sunday morning. Good luck

Looked like a nice mess on the table there Tom. What was the magic depth? What was the average 11? How were the flies? NICE JOB, CONGRATS. Hoping to give it a try sometime later next week.

Had a great day with the son and grandson. Black ditch 22 to 28 ft with 24 or 25 ft being the best. Wind was a pretty steady blow this morning pushing us at about 1mph which we thought was bad but actually was doing the trick. Very few pods or schools, had to find the holes and  cracks and continue the drifts over and over.
Lots of gobies and dinks, but them Perch all had gobies in them so thats a great thing and there finding a new food supply. 8 to 12 inch was the size most 10 inch as a guess. Wind laid down and went flat on us and the bite pretty much died with it. Bass Pro Perch rigs with minnows , glow in the dark ones seemed to do best. Fished from 7:30 to 1pm and could take the heat so we headed in, but what a great day with the boys.

We figured who ever was there was on fish, if we wouldn't of found some by the ditch we were coming back your way lol.
Bite was slow but steady when we hit the small holes that were trenchs we got hits. Almost came back your way. Wind died about 11:30 or 12:00 and it got hot. We didn't think we would do that well with no real reports, but wanted to try the new boat on the Big Pond and the Grandsons first of many voyages on the Big lake and he loved it.

Nice boat I'm jealous. Hooker..well worth the hour + drive. Maybe just wait a week or two and it will be on like donkey Kong.  Double jumbo every drift is awesome and perch is 22$ a pound $$$

We have a couple days with north winds but then next week looks like south winds, hot and excellent perch weather. Hopefully some warmer water will be blown in with the north winds. If we get some warmer water the soft shells will be HOT...

for some i guess its the adventure of "the big lake".  from a fishing standpoint its not worth the drive for, what ten perch?  only need to drive a few miles from here for better fishing and no limits.  plenty of 10-12" perch inland.

Never seen a bass sized perch inland indiana. Maybe I don't Fish the right spot. Nothing like a 2 hook rig bending your rod. Yellow lake is 22$ a pound last I checked

That is a brute. I would like to get a few that big so I could make a stringer with 4-5 fish. By the way what does that fish weigh 24 ozs.????

The 15 inchers this year went from 1 lb. 10 1/4 ounces (26 1/4 ounces) to 2 lbs. 2 oz (34 ounces). Weighed on a certified scale. For those of you that don't know I hatch these fish in one of my ponds, bring then inside and train them to feed on artificial feed and keep them inside until the following spring. They are then placed in a holding pond and fed for another year until the following spring when I can easily tell the males from the females. Then only the females go into the trophy perch and bluegill pond, and are harvested when they reach a minimum of 14 inches.

Not the same as fishing public waters and I don't claim it to be. It's a business where I sell them to taxidermists. I have and do allow folks to help me harvest them via hook and line just before they drop their eggs, but also use a large  seine. Some want to have their biggest mounted which is fine too.

Biggest so far was 16 1/4 inches and 2 lbs. 13 ounces. 5 ounces bigger than the state record. Haven't harvested a 16 incher since.

The following were harvested this spring.

Thanks for the kind words. It gets pretty involved but is a nice diversion from the taxidermy that can be very labor intensive at times.

You guys think the bite will slow down with these north winds the next few days and lower temps?

I thought we need south winds so the cooler water filters in north winds blow the warm water back into shore?

That is how I thought as well. The north winds would carry the warmer waters back closer to shore being on the surface (top). Just my 2 cents. Am I right thinking this????

Well if burns harbor was as dead as Michigan city it stands to reason no one was out .the line of storms probably scared some from going out I ventured out about 730 am

Need a few days of good hot south or south west winds.
Hopefully we got a bite for july 23rd Perch Derby, sometimes its rough.

Perch don't like warm water. The perch I raise are descendants of Lake Erie fish. This time of year the big ones just sulk at the bottom and most won't come up for pellets.

Great, thanks.  I haven't been on the lake in 6 or 7 years and it's been even longer since I have perch fished on LM.  Needless to say my expectations are pretty low, just looking to get out on the big lake.

Good luck. Try fishing the troughs close to shore where it drops off to around 20 feet. Heard they have been pulling a few from this area. There areas could be only 30-100 feet off shore. Good looking lab by the way. mine is 120 pounds and he still thinks he is a lap dog. Got to love them.

Caught a few.  Windy, even with the south winds there was a strong chop. We were struggling to hold, had to use anchor combined with the trolling motor.  I will be bringing different anchor next time.  We only fished 2 hours, thunderstorm pushed us off.  We probably could have had a 2 man limit or real close.  Nothing too big, 1 that hit 12, majority were 9 or 10.  Kept a couple dinks that swallowed the hook.  Had fun, hadn't been on the big lake in a few years.

I got a question for you perch guys. I know on smaller inland lakes perch fishing after dark is never good, but what about on the big lake? Can you get perch after dark?

I went out monday afternoon and started down past beverly shores in about 40' and drifted in up to 15'. Caught 9 down that way all 8"-9". Then moved back to mt baldy and landed 3 more with the biggest going 11 1/2". I moved back down to beverly shores again to see if i could get some better numbers but a fellow fisherman had ignition problems so I towed him back to trail creek marina. It was a long slow pull but the 40hp Merc did just fine. All fish were caught in the 30'-35' range for me.

Didn't do good at all ,caught a bunch of 7 inchers and marked quite a bit still great to be out .just wondering what most people use for bait .i use small shiners and maybe that's the problem ,I've used flatheads before with not much luck ,are shiners better
Title: Re: Big Lake Perching tomorrow
Post by: MC_angler on Jul 21, 2016, 01:50 PM
I was out last night in Michigan and marked a ton of fish, but not that many biters. Kept 20 between 2 guys in 2.5 hours. Had to leave before the evening bite though. Gotta hit the window right, especially during hot days with full moon

I think shiners are better than fatheads.

With cold water in close, that is a great thing for perch fishing - they dont want to be in 48 degree water, so it crams them all into 40 feet and shallower, where it is easy to find them
Title: Re: Big Lake Perching tomorrow

I agree with the baby shiners. Dont get to perch fish big lake much but always take rosies, baby shiners, and fatheads. Shiners alaays did the best!

Had a HOT but great day on the Big Lake for some Perch.
Started off as a HOT day and continued getting HOTTER.
Great time with good friends and Family.
We ended up with 29 keeper Perch, probably 100's of dinks returned and no Gobies for our boat which some of the boats reported
a lot caught. Started off slow then it turned on for about 3 hrs or so and everyone around us was pulling fish, which is a good day of fun and catching. If you've never had a perch outing like this your missing a lot of fun but its hard to get a good perch trip like these
but it really turned out pretty good.My boys and Grandson had a blast and thats the most important part to me of any trip. Fished with
youngest son Andrew(his first Perching trip) but hes fished the lake for Salmon and Trout before and son Tom Jr. and Grandson Thomas III. When it got so hot we couldn't take it we would go for a swim. Jr got our biggest being 12 1/4 I believe but anyway a great day on the water with great memories and bringing the Grandson into this Great sport as a lifer lol.
Water was a beautiful blue and clear all day.

Made it out for a few hours saturday and sunday, just merely missing the storm by minutes saturday. Went out of trail creek marina and probably would have got soaked if i wasn't able to get under turning train bridge. Only kept 5 each day and let go a lot. I only kept anything over 10". Biggest went 11 1/2". Fished west out of the harbor mostly in front of the stone wall in anywhere from 12'-17'. It was fun but was a hot one!

Does anyone now what the big fish was for the perch derby?

I don't know about the perch derby, but Saturday we had 3 over 13, biggest was 14

Kept a 2 man limit of 70 and most were 8-10, a few 10-12, and the 3 jumbos

Not surprising, the lake flipped and there is cold water in close. 62 surface temp on the beach this morning at Michigan City.

I camped at the Dunes last weekend.  I know the water was much warmer Thursday and Friday then it was saturday and sunday.  We launched my kayak off of the beach one day and paddled straight out.  I have never perch fished the big lake before, so didn't really know where to start.  We didn't have any live bait, but did manage a couple of small ones on plastics.  I would guess we were in 15-20' of water.
