Title: Best Beer?
Post by: slipbob on Apr 07, 2004, 01:57 PM
Okay what's your favorite brewsky.  I don't want to hear anything here less than 5 bucks a 6 pack.  You get what you pay for in beer like wine.  If it's less than 9 bucks a bottle it's most likely not good same with beer.  Yes there may be exceptions but anyway my tops is the products out of Sierra Nevada.  Tops is the stout, followed by the Celebration Ale which is a Christmastime only brew.  Next has got to be their Bigfoot Barleywine a spring only offering and their India Pale Ale which is draft only.  Saranac makes some fine brews as well as Brooklyn and Harpoon.

Too much beer, not enough room to post....

I like Harpoon too.  Their brewery is right across the river from me in Windsor, VT.  I really liked Catamount before they were bought out by Harpoon.  They made an Oktoberfest that was awesome.

I also like Heineken, Guinness, Sam Adams, Long Trail Double Bag (double the alchohol content!!).  I really like dark stout beers that have a lot of body and bite to them.  Killian's Irish Red.  Red Stripe is pretty good.  There are a lot of German beers that I like.  Maisel's Weisse is my favorite.  I really got hooked on the hefeweizens when I was in the service.

I am going to break your rule though...  My all time favorite in-expensive, drink it very cold on the hottest day of the year beer is Budweiser!!!  They go down the best when it is hot out and you have been workin' or fishin' hard all day.  Heineken is pretty good at bbqs with a big fat steak too.

Post by: Somers on Apr 07, 2004, 02:16 PM
I like the Sierras, Saranacs and Brooklyn beers as well.  I also like Magic Hat and some of the seasonal Sam Adams.

Just keep the fruit out of my beer.  I can't stand Cranberry lambs dick, or any other cherry wheat, ginger brew, orange cinnamon crap.  What are we drinking here, beer or herbal tea???

AND I like those $5 sixers slipbob lol.  They're great on a hot summer day when they're ice cold and the fish are cooperating.
Title: Re: Best Beer?
Post by: slipbob on Apr 07, 2004, 02:26 PM
Somers you are so right no fruity flaky beers here.  Yeah okay 5 bucks a six when it's cold and you're real thirsty and have had 2 or 3 or 5 already is fine especially if I drank all my beers already.  I can't think of any right now but I'm sure they are there.

Cider the buds I can't comment on it could start trouble but yeah Hefe's like Paulaner or Hoegarden are sweet.

Now this is a good topic (http://img48.photobucket.com/albums/v146/Bobman2000/GIFS/th_beerchug.gif)

My all time favorite beer is Ayinger Celebrator Dopple Bock from Germany.  Very dark but not as thick as Guinness.  I also like Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout from the UK.  Saranac has some good beers as well, Carmel Porter and Black Forest come to mind.  As you can probably tell, I'm a fan of dark beers!!

For that thirst quencher on a hot summer day, it would have to be Labatt Blue (http://img48.photobucket.com/albums/v146/Bobman2000/GIFS/th_icon_beer.gif)

My only comment about Budweiser ....   (http://img48.photobucket.com/albums/v146/Bobman2000/GIFS/th_throwup.gif)

Bobman I love it.  Absoulutely love it.  I don't know how the heck you did it but that's about one of the best posts ever.  Your bud comment is captivating and worth checking out for it's entertainment value.  Dark beers rule.  Porters, Stouts and such.  So much flavor rolling off the tongue.  Try the Sierra Nevada stout I think you would love it.  Nice complex and hoppy.  Layers and layers of flavor in fact I just put a sixer in fridge today of Sierra stout Porter and some Harpoon IPA's I know what I'll be reaching for in about an hour and a half when I get home.  The first thing I do when I get home from work is grab a coldie out of the fridge,  venture upstairs and change into my playclothes all the while grabbing some frosty sips along the way.  Hmmmmm beer!!!

You guys ever heard of Rogue beers? They're from Newport, OR (I used to live out there) and they kick arse! You can try them at McGregor's, the Mecca of draft beer. Try such selections as Dead Guy Ale and Brutal Bitter. You can take home a growler or two when you find one you like. They're kind of hard to find in the store, but with a little searching...
My favorite cold summer beer is Blue.
I LOVE BEER!!!

i forgot to mention anchor steam too.

Lot's of good beers posted here.

I stopped w/ Killians and any other Coors made brews years ago when I found out they contribute to anti hunting groups.

Cider, I love Bud as well.  My goto.

Also love that Miller beer.  The high life commercials are funny as $hit.

Anybody like Schlitz or Schmidts?  How about old style for you mid-westerners?

Can't forget about Gennessee either!  Cream Ale is one of my favorites!  Can't find Genny 12 Horse anymore, but that was a good one.

We used to get another one out of PA that was very similar to Genny.  It came in a wax carton case and long neck brown bottles.  The labels were always screwed up.  Bottles either were missing the label, had two or three on one bottle, or they were crooked.  We only paid about four or five bucks for a case of this stuff, but it wasn't swill!  I wish I could remember the name of it!!
Title: Re: Best Beer?
Post by: Somers on Apr 08, 2004, 10:45 AM
I like Shlitz, but not the after effects that sound similar.

I also like Schaefer.  Had a lot of family that worked at the old brewery in Bklyn.

What about Ballentine?

This'll piss a bunch of people off around here I bet.  I hate Genny anything lol.

Also my bro went to school in Maryland and another beer I don't care if I never have again is Natty Bumpo, or nattybo for short.

Now that I think about it, There's not too many I don't like.
Title: Re: Best Beer?
Post by: Cider on Apr 08, 2004, 11:03 AM
I don't think so.  I really need to see a picture of a bottle or the carton.  I remember the carton being red.  I will do some poking and see if I can figure it out.
Title: Re: Best Beer?
Post by: Somers on Apr 08, 2004, 11:07 AM
Schlitz is a red and white can if I remeber correctly.  That's probably the one Cider.
Title: Re: Best Beer?
Post by: Cider on Apr 08, 2004, 11:08 AM
Definitely not Schlitz.  I can still get that and do occasionally.  This was bottled beer.  I want to say it did begin with a B that was why I thought maybe ballantine.  Definitely from PA too.  Schlitz is from Milwaukee.
Title: Re: Best Beer?
Post by: Somers on Apr 08, 2004, 11:27 AM
Right on the schlitz Cider.  I was confusing it w/ Schaeffer.

I think you might be right about the Ballentine.  I've actually only had it once and I don't recall the bottle, but my dad used to sing the jingle all the time.  That's why I was asking about it.
Title: Re: Best Beer?
Post by: Bobman on Apr 08, 2004, 11:53 AM
slipbob  -  I've had the Sierra Porter which was my favorite brew from that brewery.  There are many more dark beers that I haven't mentioned (not enough room for all of them  ;) )that are really good.

foszey  -  That's usually the end result (pun intended) when drinking Bud!  Of course if it was Genny Cream Ale, aka Genny Screamers you wind up sitting on the throne doing this: (http://img48.photobucket.com/albums/v146/Bobman2000/GIFS/bawling.gif)
Title: Re: Best Beer?
Post by: rgfixit on Apr 10, 2004, 06:06 PM
Ballantyne Ale was produced in a green bottle with a green and gold label. Their trademark was a pretzel shaped gold logo.

Could you be thinking of Carling Black Label? It had a red label with black lettering.

Genesee Beer and Ale.....brewed right here in good old Rochester.....Genny Pee and Scream Ale we call it.....never could drink that stuff...too much good Canadian just over the border I guess.

Anyone old enough to remember Standard Dry Ale or Topper Beer? Also Rochester native brews from days gone by.

RG
Title: Re: Best Beer?
Post by: Cider on Apr 10, 2004, 06:08 PM
No, not Carling and pretty sure it wasn't Ballantine either.  I am still thinking on it.  What I remember the most is that the "swill" was dirt cheap.  Maybe $5 for a 24 count wax carton.  The labels were cheap too.

Sure wish I could remember what it was.  I suspect that it was from a brewery in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area.  Probably gone under now.  Maybe Stegmaier?

Cider - wasn't Stegmaiers 1857 was it?  Cheap and really not that bad.  Iron city was about the cheapest local brew from my college days.

I like anything that says Labatts on the label, Moosehead and Molson.  Bud is my standby and will down a few Busch while fishing.  Yuengling and Corona (hold the lime :-X )are both good thirst quenchers when tending to a hot Bar-B-Q.

I am thinking maybe...  I really need to see a case of it to be able to remember.  The darn labels were falling off the bottles so much that I can't remember what it was called!  Probably consumed too much of it to remember too.   ;D

I have a buddy that drinks that stuff all the time.  Next time I'm there I'll take a pic if there are any labels left.  ;D That's what made me think of it, I always thought he just peeled them off, then I grabbed one out of the fridge one day and most of them weren't labeled properly or at all.  :-\

Molson XXX is their "Super Lager Beer".

At 7.3% it's considered a malt licquor. It is a smooth, full bodied, dark amber beer with a touch of sweetness.

I'm a fan of quality...not quantity....this is one of my all time favorites.

I believe the Canadians make the best beers in the world.

RG - you can't blame a guy for trying to sweet talk you out of your Molson XXX can you!?!?  ;D

Hey, if you really like that, then you should try Long Trail Double Bag.  It is very similar in taste to the XXX and has just as high an alchohol percentage.  Double Bag has a very nutty chocolatey flavor to it and goes down real easy!

The stuff is awesome!  Long Trail is a brewery that is in Woodstock, VT.  You should be able to find there brews easily in NY.  Just look for the beer with a brown label that has a holstein on it with two sets of udders (hence double bag)!!

Here in Sask. the most popular beers are Molsons (Pilsner, Canadian, etc.) though the Great Western Brewery in Saskatoon (formerly Carlings but bought by employees and made independant) has won a couple of awards I think.  If I'm having a domestic, it's usually a Pil or a Boh, eh, but I like British bitter (Websters when I can get it, or Bombardier).  My friends who brew scratch beer tend to shoot for that sort of taste, so that works out fine by me!  That xxx crap is one of several high test malts they sell in the liquor stores here for hopeless alcoholics so I tried it and found that it gave me too little fun and too sore a head.  I call it hospital beer.

There's a "brew-your-own" pub in Shrewsbury, Mass on route 9 called Deja Brew...the head brewer there (Dave) has a beer called "Big Trouble" Not cheap, but you can only drink two of them. Second place would also go to Deja Brew and the "Marathon Gold"
This brewery is also the home of "GoatBoy Beer" although if you buy it there it is called "Stunner" (very limited production and be sure to call and make sure they have some brewed)

Slipbob, if you're going to drink a hefeweizen you might as well go for the real deal imported right from Bavaria...

The beer on the right came from the bottle on the left.  I really really like Maisels Weisse, but cannot get it over here.  I used to drink that religiously when living in Germany.  However, the Julius Echter is a pretty close substitute.  It went really well with tonight's weiner schnitzel, spaetzle, and sauerkraut!  ;D

The beer on the right came from the bottle on the left.  I really really like Maisels Weisse, but cannot get it over here.  I used to drink that religiously when living in Germany.  However, the Julius Echter is a pretty close substitute.  It went really well with tonight's weiner schnitzel, spaetzle, and sauerkraut!  ;D

So right Cider I have had the Julius a few times and it's a sweetie.  My local bevy center has growlers to go and they recently had a keg of Hoegarden which is fine too.  Excellent choice of hefes Cider.

I am lucky because we have a really good beverage center about 500 yards from my office.  They have a quality selection of beer from Europe and a lot of micro brewed domestics.  Most of it sells quickly enough that a fresh stock is usually had.  My brother has a place back in the Binghamton NY area that's called PMP delicatessan and the owner carries some really great German beer.  Lot's of stuff I can't recall but they sell mini kegs.  He's a German importer and specializes in beer that you won't find at any beverage center.  I just don't know enough about German beer to remember the names of some of it but it's way more than your average Dinkel Acker.

Ahh, there are so many "local" breweries in Germany that you would have to be a walking encyclopedia to remember it all anyway!!

500 yds from the office eh?  Takes the stress right out of a bad day at work!!  ;D

It doesn't matter as long as it tastes like beer and its cold!  And keep your funny stuff to your self honey, berries, nut’s, etc are for tea not BEER!  Like Benjamin Franklin once said, “Beer is proof that God loves us.” don’t screw it up by adding these foreign impurities!  I’ve lived all over the Unites States and I have to say the Canadian’s do it right.  When it comes to beer I want the water to come from as far North as possible, you don’t go to Mexico to drink the water do you!!!  Look up, see blue!  Enough said!

Some new arrivals in my fridge.  I highly, highly reccomend the middle one, the Schneider Weisse.  It's about the best wheat beer you can find unless you go to the motherland  (Germany) and sneak it back from one of the local breweries.  The Saranac wheat is a new offering by them and is so so at best.  The Franziskaner is a great Bavarian offering that stacks up with Hacker-Pschor and Paulaner.  The Scheider Weisse is the mackdaddy though and get it if you want some awesome wheat.  A small wedge of lemon is required to bring out the flavors with these Hefe's.

I'm a huge porter fan and can relate to that.

Here's a fantastic brew I reviewed last night.  I rate it an excellent buy with an "A" for taste and and "A" for packaging.  One of those great microbrewed treasures we are blessed with here in the good ole USA.  It's from New Hampshire and is the home of our esteemed and now very busy moderator "Cider".  I hope things are working out for you Mike with the new job.  Take a break and have a "Smutty".  The olive oil was nearby so I thought it would make a fine companion for the photo.  By the way this olive oil is incredible.  It's about $8 a can but it's really, really good.

I have seen their brewskies for a while but never got around to trying them.  It's something "she the one who must be obeyed" bought.  She got a sixer of it the other night and it was my first try with it.  I have an awesome beverage center here that has more beers than I could get around to trying in a summer.  Tons of microbrewed stuff that all looks good but some of it is just average.  I'll buy this stuff again soon.  Here's a link I found.  My company's filtering software wouldn't let me get into the smuttynose.com site directly but it let me link to this.  They don't want us looking at anything offensive mind you like some brewery's website.  God forbid we looked at that.  Anyway Bobman I don't know how far out they distribute this stuff but maybe go to your local yellow pages and phone some bevy centers and see if they carry it.

I'm 17 and just finsihed high school, I'm not old enough to drink beer.

That said, the beer of choice at all of our keg parties was usually coors.  budweiser is just vile, bitter disgustingness. sometimes my buddies and i will pick up the sam adams variety packs, which taste pretty great after a few warm up beers. at parties we tend to stcik to cheaper beers (high schoolers, what do you expect?) miller, coors, once in a while heineken keg cans. also slipbob, the otter creek beer comes from middlebury vt, where im beginning college in 2 weeks. i might have to convince some of the upperclassmen to buy me a few.  ;)

better hope my mom doesnt read this one, lol.

Oh man i had no idea this thread what here.  I feel like i have been missing out. I am so excited i dont know where to start..... First and formost the best beer has got to be Sam Adams, Majic Hat #9 close behind. As for what i like to drink regularly for being a broke/drunk college student i have to go with a 30 rack of the Highlife. Then theres Yuengling, oh wait theres molson export, oh man then you could get saranac (anyone is great) oh nuts i almost forgot guiness, oh man i love guiness. Oh with guiness you can get some bass and make a black and tan, oh killian's red thats good.  Honey brown love that, heineken(got to be fresh though) Then you have those really hot sunny days where corona just flows down like water(or mexican ****censored word****, but it is still good)

But....i have to say even being beerman and all, my staple has got to be the good old Jack and coke!!

My favorites include Yuengling, molson, labatt's, miller, and a variety of the micro brews from Wagner Winery on the eastern side of Seneca.  I'm an equal apportunity drinker, however, and will give any beer a chance.  Some just don't like me as much as others.

Personally, I do not drink beer while engaged in my serious fishing time, (1/2 hour before daybreak 'til 9AM while persuing my beloved perch.... but I do luv the suds!!!
I drink only the Green Bottled Skunky Stuff like Becks, Molson Golden, Heinekin, Grolsch, St. Paulies Girl, and the only domestic that fits in here Rolling Rock. Also like the stouts- Guiness, Becks and Heinikin dark, etc.
Anyway- ..........    (Oh well...the beer maddde me forget what I was gonna sayyy!!!)

I'd have to say that other than the Blue all of Zach's beers would be at the bottom of my list.  Basically I drink Blue (usually lite) as a cheap beer for fishing or working around the house.  I can't believe the bigred doesn't like any Utica brews!  I would agree that the Matt's beers and Utica Club are pretty bad.  Having gone to college there (my apartment was a couple of blocks from the brewery) and consumed vast quantities of Matt's beer, I don't think I could ever drink it again.  The Saranac line though is very good and is some of my favorite reasonable priced beers.  A couple of my favorites from there are the Black Forest and the Pale Ale.  Basically all the domestic mass produced beers suck.  I usually drink nothing but craft and micro brews and home brews.  I think I posted my all time favorite last year in this thread but I'll give it to you again.  The best is Ayinger Celebrator Dopple Bock from near Munich,Germany

GAB isn't that bad for what it is.  At least it's not Bud (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v146/Bobman2000/GIFS/throwup.gif), one drink of that and I have a headache that won't quit!

The worst beer I ever had in college was definitely Piels.  It was like $4 for a case and it was the only beer that lasted more than a couple days in the fridge.  Unfortunately it was all we could afford with the money we got returning empties!

Any one remember, or will admit to, drinking the generic beer.  It had a yellow label and in big black block letters just said BEER.  Used to get it in high school because it was cheap.  If fact I think they paid you to take it away  ;D!

German beer is pretty darn good, I am neighbors right now with a colony of folks who get there german beer in kegs right from germany, and they dont mind sharing when we go to give them a hand.
If you like Pale Ale's check out Homer Brewing companies from Homer Alaska it is real good stuff, goes down real smooth.
I like Labat Blue a lot, just tastes good to me.
Although I tend not to be too too picky in what I drink most of the time it is medium priced stuff (bud light) occasionally it is keystone, but MGD isnt too bad either.

Thats the worst part about crap beer, the first sip when your completely sober  I remember we used to pre-game at my buddies place, and the go back to my place for a kegger we were throwing, we were getting genny light dirt cheap in kegs dirt cheap at the time, and making a killing at $5 a head...one morning i figured i would try the genny light before i started drinking... i couldnt even barely drink that crap! keystone light though, i think might be even worse

I hear you there Lance....normally, it doens't matter if I've had 5, 10 or 15 beers, I can't drink crap beer. My friends always say "Give me 5 or 6 good beers and I can drink Genny the rest of the night..." well, not me...I absolutely cannot drink any Genny...Well, the other night at a party the first one I had was a Mich Light.... Wiped it right off my list, that's for sure...I don't know how I left Miller Light off, it's starting to become one of my fav's... I'll admit though, we mainly drink Old Mill, because yeah, it's cheap...

Chucker- tell me, how are the parties up at PSC? I've heard they have some huge ones...  :whistling: :thumbup_smilie:

Im willing to bet there are parties up there....   Any college you go to now-a-days always have some big parties, and plenty of them.     Afterall alcohol consumption is the favorite way to pass the time for college students.

You think the MG's the best one?   hmmmm, I'm into my second big Dortmunder now and I think I'd be reaching for the Bass first.   Of course I haven't had a Golden for quite a few years, not even sure if they still sell it here. Where did I read that..... Canadians didn't invent beer drinking, but we've nearly perfected it?   Could of been here.  You're right about not getting tanked fishing..bad form, but I'll take a few cans if I'm doing an all-nighter carp fishing on the bank cause nobody goes there.  cheers, Richard

Title: THE BEST BEER
Post by: bigredfishing on Nov 14, 2005, 09:17 AM
While up in Plattsburgh this weekend, I made a run across the border for the finest brew in the land, appropriately named "LA FIN DU MONDE" which means 'the end of the world'...Very much a belgian taste, it is not strong, and does not taste like it has 9% alcohol content.  There is no other beer that compares.   It is a wee bit expensive...they cost 13.95 canuck a 6 pack at the duty free, they were sold in 4 packs last time I got some, maybe that explains the price increase?  Fantastic stuff.

That is good beer.... a friend of mine makes home-made scratch beer that really resembles it.   It's cheap in the liquor stores around here if you buy the big (I think 750 ml) bottles.  They make a couple of others with a lesser alcohol content too and they are good as well. Maudit is the one with a picture on the label of some guys in a canoe going over a falls into a burning hell. That brewery is owned (so I've heard) by Robert Charlebois, who was a big star in Quebec as well as a seperatist activist in the '70s.

If you've ever been to Europe, Which I have twice, you'd probably never drink American beer again.

In Germany, the micro brews are the bomb! People in the states try to reproduce the micro's and are getting better at it but they still have a long way to go.
Amsterdam is the home of Heinekin as we all know, I would classify "fresh" Heinekin as the best tasting beer I've ever had. Can't stand it here in the states! Once it's about a month old due to shipping and handling, it becomes skunky and tastes nothing like the fresh stuff over there.
Here in NY, Bud's okay, but the canadians have my market! Like someone else said, "they put alcohol in it" :D

LOL i was just thinking zach, that if you think you've had beer...just wait, college takes beer drinking to new and uncharted levels

You know Lance, I was reading this thread today (while drinking a nice, cold Canadian  ;) ) and just laughed and nodded my head in agreement with you.  College certainly does take beer drinking to a whole new level!  And I must say, I certainly love the view!  :D  Here is my updated Top 5/Bottom 5:

Top 5

1) Molson Canadian--it's so good, and at $14 for a 28 rack of bottles, a good deal too!
2) Yuengling Black and Tan
3) Rolling Rock (especially from a keg, like we had at the I.S. Get-Together on Simon Pond)
4) Labatt Blue
5) Magic Hat #9

Bottom 5

1) ANY Keystone product (especially Keystone Light!  ...this stuff is vile, and not fit for human consumption IMHO!
2) Again, any Genny is terrible
3) IceHouse
4) Pabst Blue Ribbon
5) Magic Hat Saint-Gootz...it may have just been the batch I had, but it tasted like I was drinking from an ashtray, and had a ton of sediment of some sort at the bottom (I think it was yeast maybe?)...crappy to say the least...  :-\

I also really love Butternuts Heinnieweisse Weissebier (along with Butternuts Porkslap Pale Ale)...this is actually from a micro-brewery that a friend from back home works at...they just started brewing in December, and man it that stuff good!!!

Can't wait for Friday!

Growing up in the Oswego/Sterling area of New York you are predestined to become a drinking machine, gennycream ale,Utica club, then when miller was still strong in Fulton everyones parents who worked there had cases of the stuff in their basement! it wasn't until the days of mispent youth following the Greatful Dead around this beautiful country  that i discovered Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout and their Taddy Porter .Talk about porkchop in a bottle you dont need supper after a few of those!! My all time favorite beer is Pilsner Urquell from the Czech Republic.  It's the oldest Pilsner in the world ( that's still produced).  It's pricy, but worth it for special occasions.  For everyday consumption, you can't beat Molson Lager.  On a hot summer day, when I just know I'm going to have more than a few, it's Bud all the way!  Tight Lines, Mike

I cannot believe I have not posted to this thread yet. I do homebrewing- I've taken it to the point that I basically have my own microbrewery. I have three fermentors which are computer monitored and heat controlled that are brewing pretty much non-stop. Of course, any of my favorites are going to be my own beers. My sampling list includes:

Hombre (Corona clone)
Beergut Brew (Irish Stout)
American Liger #4 (see pic of label below, only funny if you saw the movie)
Last Year Weizenbier, AKA Not so Wise n beehr (dedicated to the departure of g-dubs-bush from the oval office)
Cleveland Steamer Ale
American Pale

And many, many more!

Red stripe, especially when bought from the cold cooler of shoreless acres on conesus, just before launching the boat.  Also like the corona's with a lime.

I can't afford to drink Red Stripe and corona all the time, so I've been known to tip back some blues!!

Magic Hat Number 9  Draft beer Is the best special occasion beer.  but only as a draft beer it tastes totally different from a bottle.  It is really hard to find anywhere on draft though.  One place near me has it every so often but they rotate it out with another hard to find beer.

When im not able to get that or fishing I drink just plain old Bud.  I love those new 10 oz cans..... they stay cold for for the entire can and they are a better bargain.

Chucker-  I figured everyone up at school would be buying Old Mill and The Beast too....but it's not the case.  Personally, I usually always bought Canadian, because it's my favorite...and at $15 a 28 rack, it's a good price too.  Once in a while I'll change things up and buy a 12 rack of XXX (which usually lasts me an entire weekend!) or a couple 12's of Honey Brown or Blue, but typically it's Canadian.  Most people buy cheaper beer though...right now the favorites seem to be Pabst Blue Ribbon or Keystone (Light and Ice)...personally, I think both are on the same level as Genny ANYTHING...    But hey, that's just me...when I'm really strapped for cash, I just buy 3 40's of O.E. (Hey, it's not like I'm buyin' Colt .45, although it still isn't much better  ::) ).  The way I see it, if I'm going to be drinkin... I might as well LIKE what I'm drinkin...

I don't know what the best beer is since I have not tried them all.  I really don't like the mass produced imitation beers such as Bud, etc.  I have had some wonderful beers in the Pacific Northwest such as Alaskan Amber but it's impossible to find here in NJ.  I had a terrific Red Ale in Sedona at a restaurant/microbrewery last year.  Of all the major beers, I like Sam Adams Octoberfest the best.

Jim Cook, the owner of Sam Adams said, the big brews like Bud, Miller, and Coors are some of the best technical beers out there. What it takes to make a beer that consistant is impressive. I was at a speech he was giving; what a really cool multi-millionaire.

My new favorite is Honey Moon. This is a beer that is made by Coors, but it's a small scale brew. Their Flagship of this is Blue Moon, but they have done seasonals with it. Winter Moon is really good as well, but the signature Orange flavor is really good IMO. I would suggest everyone give it a go.

Lemme know what you think TA. Don't tell anyone, but I think it's better than Blue Moon. I am not a fruit in my beer type of guy, but I do squeeze the orange in my Blue Moon. With this Honey Moon, it's stand alone. It has a smooth texture with a nice easy drinking feel to it. I only have 6 pack left of the case that buddy brought down and it's being saved for special occasion, or this upcoming weekend.

Cheers,
Mike

Try pouring some Smithwicks (pronounced smiddicks) in a pint, then pouring the guinness over the top. Of course you must have the proper spoon to pour the guinness right. It really takes the bite out of the Guinness. You can also try it with Harp, it's called a half and half.

Beer is definately an aquired taste. I started working for a wholesaler as a MGD guy, didn't like much else. After 4 years, I definately broadened my horizons. I know what I don't like, hoppy beers. IPA's are definately not my style. I lean towards easy drinking, but I keep trying new things. Here's a strange one for you guys: If you like chocolate cookies, buy a 6 pack of Yuengling Porter and have a beer with your cookies. It's a great beer by itself, but I have heard they make a great pair. ;)

A Black and Tan is Guinness and Bass. ;)

Mike

Actually a black/tan is traditionally made with guiness/harp (both made in Ireland).  We Americanized it with guiness/bass...since bass is much tastier than harp.  Harp to me tastes like a old glass of keg-drawn old swilwaukee.

I'd rather drink Old Milwaukee than Yingling.  That is the worst beer I have ever had, and I've had some doozies!  I even tried it a couple times at different bars and couldn't finish a bottle.  The way everyone talks about it, you'd think it was great.  NOT!!!

If you like Yingling, you'd love Genesee Cream Ale!!!

My all time favorite is a beer called TKO out of wind river brewing company in pinedale wyoming. It is technically a barley wine because it has an alcohol content of 16%. It's a dark beer similar to a stout but smoother in my opinion. The only problem is they will only serve you two glasses in one sitting because they only brew one batch a year. The reason for that they said is it costs to much to make and they barely break even with it. So I usually just go fill up the growler and take it home.

I also like land shark a lot easier to find and goes well with fish!

If any of you ny'ers havnt had Ommegang yet you're missing out! The most flavorful beer I've ever had. Often companies list the flavor they tried to capture with their beer, but I can never taste them. Ommegang is the first brewery where I can taste the subtle difference between ingrediants. It's truly wonderful. Out of staters...not sure how you could get some. But the brewery is in Cooperstown, ny. They have concerts occasionaly. Make the trip!

No, the stuff I brew! ;D

 :clapping:

The stuff I brew is always good (to me anyway).
Like anything you do or make from scratch, it's typically always good.
But I could never nail it down to only one beer.
A long time ago, maybe 25 years or so, I would have answered "McCardles".
You can only get it in Ireland the last time I looked.
But again, that was 25 years ago.
These days there are literally 1000's of craft beers out there.
And most of them are d**n good.
So for me, again, the stuff I brew is always my favorite, and then most any craft beer will do just fine.
Followed of course very closely by free beer.

Cheers!
