Well Zooker, at least you guys were in the money!  I know exactly how it feels.  I was in a tourney several years ago on the Lower Potomac, 46 boats and only 8 brought back fish.  My buddy and me were one fish short of a limit and lost by two ounces to a team that had a full limit.  I lost a big bass that dove under the boat and got leverage against the hull and pulled free.  That fish may have been big fish of the tournament, bigger than any fish that we weighed in.  We won some money, but it cost us $500 cash and $500 in prize value.  We had a blast that day though.  There was a 15" size limit and we caught 14 3/4" fish all friggin day long on Rat-L-Traps anchored up while we saw other teams zipping back and forth up the river!  Our homework the day before paid off and almost paid off big for us ;D
