Smelt fishing is very popular in Japan. The Japanese smelt is very small. About 2-4 inches.
We usually use an electric reel using AAA batteries. Terminal tackle is small 5-7 hooks with 4-5g sinker.
Bait is maggot cutting it in half. We enjoy very small bite that’s on rod tip.

Yes it’s similar to sabiki rig and hook is very small. Its length is about 80cm.
