Title: wny anglers 05 pics (5-15 erie walleye fishing pg4)
Post by: wny angler on Apr 16, 2005, 04:42 PM
finally got out to do some fishing for the first time in a few weeks.tough choices to make-do i go for crappies, jumbo perch or steelhead.  ::)

ended up doing a little rainbow/steelheading with my son and a friend who rarely fishes-had to put the blindfold on  him before taking him to my secret fishing hole  ;).
the water wasn't in the best shape high and murky and the fish were spread out .had to really work for the fish today  -but we all hooked -caught and lost enough fish to make for good time on the stream this morning

heres a few we landed this morning

Nice steelhead! That clarity of water is a good clarity, about 1 ft. more of visibility and then it would be perfect river fishing clarity. I like a bit of stain in the water because you can catch multiple fish out of the same hole then. Definitely good to get out and catch a steelhead in a river, running line. Much better than that icefishing thing ;)

went out this morning with my brother on lake Erie to see if we could catch a few jumbo perch. the perch weren't very hungry today but the smallmouth bass were-caught 9 smallies out in the 55 ft perch depths. didn't fill the bucket with perch but i came home with enough for lunch.

i landed 2 bass on 2 rods at the same time without tangling and still managed to snap a quick photo

I don't mean its clear, just ALMOST the best clarity to river fish in. I prefer to be able to get more than about 3-4 a piece in a big hole, thats the biggest reason I prefer stained. I also catch bigger fish in stained water too. I believe the really big ones are less spooky, during the summer especially they get the kitchen sink thrown at them with I-70 being literally right next to the river with ample access. IMO the best river fishing clarity is appx. 3 fov (feet of visibility). Sorry to tangent your beautiful pics WNY but had to answer this...keep the fish coming!

the fishing is best here when the creek clears to a nice green color about 3.5 ft of vis or a little better- when its high and murky the fish are spread out and its tough finding them ,they can be anywhere-when it clears up they drop back into the big pools and runs and you can catch sometimes 30 out of one hole -they do get spooky after ya hook a bunch but they settle down and get back to bitin in no time at all.

went out to Chautauqua lake and fished the canals for crappie, was gonna go out in the boat and track down the big slab crappies but it was to windy to be out on the open water  today.

fishing was slow when we got there late morning ,most guys were already giving up
all we caught at first was a bunch of 6-8 inch sublegal dinks

Again, nice catch. You seem to be near docks and I am guessing the water is  shallow.... I was wondering if I could find similar crappie action around the docks on Lake Champlain, is it typical for crappies to be in shallow water right now, or are they there for the structure? I know a few marinas around here that have plenty of docks, what do u think?

you made the right choice goin for trout -the fishings been terrible at chautauqua and it wasnt pleasant out there with the gusty chilly winds.only seen 2 other guys with keepers -they each had 1 fish.we were lucky to find a small school of  keepers

i don't know about other lakes but the crappies in the lakes round here school up and move into the canals and shallow bays at ice out to forage on the baitfish moving into the warmer water-they stay till spawning time then move out.
might be worth checking out the shallow bays and marinas
Nice fish man. You going out for walleyes this weekend?
thanks man       I'd definitely be going for walleyes if i had a shore fishing spot like yours ;)  -not too much good shore fishing access left round here and the walleye fishings usually slow the first week or 2 of the season in this area- hoping for one more steelhead trip if the waters clean enough before the fish leave the streams.

See if you can schedule an overnight delivery to the Albany area and bring the big rig on out and we'll load her up with some fresh filets for ya to take back out west.  ;)   ;D

went out with the boy for a few hours this morning for some last chance steelhead fishing before the water warms and the fish vacate the streams till next fall.
the water was in perfect green condition and although they  were all post spawn fish ,they've had a month to recover and were putting on an acrobatic show and making drag sizzling runs. i ended up landing 9 and the kid got 3 but as usual he got the big fish of the day- a mean 30 inch buck.
we kept enough this year already so we released em all unharmed today  ;)

the steelhead around here start moving into the streams early september and stay till april /may depending on the weather and flows then head back out into the great lakes (erie/ontario) to get fat feeding on smelt and other baitfish

right on the money tfb.  i mainly drift sacs (brown trout eggs) -  the fly guys do good on sucker spawn imitations and some of the spinning guys do good casting spinners(vibrax-panther martins) but all the casting and reeling is too much like work fer me -i prefer slow drifting spawn

went out for some night time walleye fishing on lake Erie but couldn't get out in the open lake -my fishing partner was scared to head out in 3-5 ft waves so we stayed inside the harbor walls and tried there. didn't see any walleyes and the kid got the only bite and hooked into something huge and got spooled after a 20 minute battle-probably a monster catfish but we'll never know  :-\
the fishing was slow all night but at first light fish were jumping and feeding all over the place in the current from the thermal discharge from the power plant.
for the next few hours we caught one fish after another and ended up landing and releasing close to 100 smallmouth bass between the 3 of us.
by the time we left i could barely raise my arm-the fish put a real hurt-in on me  :P

Nice Smallies!  Is that Dunkirk Harbor that you were fishing?  I fished there many years ago and the small mouth action was unreal.

first time i fished dunkirk in years myself- tons of 2 to 4lb bass with a couple close to 5 - -all the guys in the bass boats dont even bother fishing the harbor-they all head out to the deeper water out in the lake after the 6-7lb bass- lots of fish out there-big ones too

I can remember one time we were fishing the harbor we got walleyes, smallies, sheeps, and a 42" flathead.  Do the browns still come in there good in the winter?  We used to get a few real footballs in there.

the last fish you caught I believe is a silver bass. We used to hammer that particular species in the upper Niagara when I was growing up. They can get pretty large. I am sure some one on here will be able to prove me right or wrong.

That's what it is dwayne.  I catch them fairly regularly in the upper Niagara.  I've gotten the in the lake too up to about 20" and 2-3# or so.  They are actually pretty tasty fillets.
