Arrrhg had a nice long reply all typed out and it didn't post :cursing:

So esssentially, these are not hybrids. They are 100% pure strain rainbows. rainbows can take on all kinds of different colour patterns. Just because they are a different colour doesn't mean they are a hybrid.

The camera I am using is a Canon a430 5MP 4X optical. Nothing special. The key to taking great pictures is composition. AS long as you can get the focus on your subject, the fish, and not have nets, rope, dirt, mud, grass, shoes, lures, tackle boxes, bait or anything like that in the background, you will take better shots. Focus on the fish, and how you want the shot to be presented. I still have an issue with getting all my stripped line out of the shot but it's difficult to get them to the reel with the way I fish the flies.

Way to go PG, those are great shots of some very nicely colored rainbows, that last one is very unique in its coloration. 8)

You should submit some of those photos to the BC fish and wildlife branch, they may use them in next years anglers guide. :)

...Here in Montana we have the same type of hybrid rainbows with the cutthroat marks under the chin and we call them Cutbows.  MT FWP says they are a naturally occuring hybrid....
yeah, neptune, i thought the same thing about our cutbows here in wyoming - i asked pgkris about it.  terrygonefishing (TGF) confirmed what kris said, but i'll be danged if those things don't look like they have some cutthroat genes in 'em.  i'd be interested to hear what a biologist had to say.

They exist only on the coast and in the rocky mountains. There are certainly none in the central interior. And also, these fish are from pure breeding strains in the Okanagan region of BC.

Stocking data:

Have a cruise thru that and you'll get a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Kris, how are you taking the shots while reeling in the fish? There is some good (professional) photography going on here - surely this is not your casual snap shot. :)

BTW, the a530 is the 5 megapixel, not the a430 (which is the 4 MP) was that a typo?

Yes, typo. My bad. Canon a430, 4MP, 4X optical.

It's fairly easy to manipluate which way the fish rests in the water. I just *try* to hold them in one spot for a picture. I try to get a side or angling shot. I take a lot of pics that are just blur as the fish flips around
Thanks

Nice tie. Looks like a cross between hares ear and a bead head prince nymph.

Colorful fish. Even that sucker (or whatever that is)  has a rainbow stripe.

Indeed, as far as suckers go, that's a pretty fish...............best we get here in upstate NY is the redhorse, which gets bright red fin margins during the spawn..................sucker or not, bet it gave you a ride on the fly line :)  Nice fish, dude.
We may say of angling, as Dr. Boteler said of strawberries, “Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did;” and so, if I might be judge, God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling.  -Izaak Walton
