I caught my first carp today and it weighed in just under 18lbs ;D im gonna go crazy making new bait now that i found them and know they are in my lake. rumor has it that 30+lbs carp are swimming in those waters :o pictures will be here later this week because i dont have a digital camera and have to get them on a disc :-X
also can you eat these and how do you clean and cook them ???

I've never tried one and until there is good to eat on this earth I never will. By the way, congrats on the first one.

Congrats to a fellow carp chaser! Some say you can smoke them, but I wouldn't go through the hassel unless I were forced.

In the field in stream magazine this month- its good beer battered and if you slice out the dark meat you still get two fillets after taking out the mudline like in wallyes
it said he took an 8pounder and after cleaning out everything got 4 pounds of meat that was perfect and a half pound + of dark crap

Congrats on your first carp Big Berk, that's a dandy one. :thumbup_smilie:
I heard one time by another angler that a carp was shot by bow and arrow out of Long Lake weighing in at 50 lbs, so a few that big could be in your area to. :)
Did you find your carp in the river or lake?

i got the pictures! i didnt catch it don a doughball the first time i caught it on a five-of-dimonds and didnt snag it, this fish bit it while it was on the bottem and i was adjusting my drag. the second time i caught it was on a oatmeal doughball. there was a few more but i ran outta bait :'( this weekend i will be fishing with a friend at the spot. i caught it at a secret spot on echo lake, sk. if you fish here you might reconize the spot but i just found it that morning and its one of my favorite spots now. im gonna go carping by Craven on Long Lake and try to find a 40lbs carp. ;D im hooked on carping ;D

You got it on the stringer and then start asking if they're good to eat? ???
What did you do with it? If you want to learn how to do proper c+r carp fishing let me know, but if you don't you're better off taking them out of Echo Lake.

oh ya the stringer my parents didnt believe and it was already injured befor i caught it, it was swimming sidways. :( i was gonna keep it for cutbait but changed my mind after thinking it over :-X it made a full recovery ;D didnt take long to revive it after pictures. i am getting an unhooking mat soon so it will be better i wasnt even thinking that day because i was looking for pike and walleye. this weekend im trying that spot again but i gotta find a better bait my bolies were of short supply and im out and they dont like pineapple. :-\

Burk, thats' a great catch, well done! We all make the same mistakes about C&R so don't sweat it and it sounds like your into learning correct C&R which is good. Anything over 5lbs for carp taste like crap but the small ones taste pretty good especially in ginger and black bean sauce. My son and I may have to come fish with you at Echo.
We caught this baby the other day. 37lbs. Can you chum the water in advance?

nice fish :clapping: a hope to get one that big some day :-\ im heading out early saturday morning in search of pike, walleye then some carp if the bite isnt good cause me and my friends got some new spinners and spoons to try out and then we will go for carp for sure sunday morning through till noon then over to A&W for dinner then might try for some bullheads and rockbass. im not gonna recomend this spot till i catch at least 2 more carp from here but i havent found anywhere where i can get bulk corn for cheap :-X i will let the secret spot out if i catch some more and if ppl dont over fish it. i know that the west end of pasqua lake has some big ones but i dont have a car or a boat...yet 8). the channel connecting echo and pasqua has some good ones too by the bridge and just work the shoreline as much as possible there. i fish alot on the east end of echo and the channel connecting echo and mission and i havent had much luck yet but found some rockbass and perch schools but lost them in the weeds, im gonna go over by mission and try there and if i can get a ride with my parents over by lebret will be good to as well as the east end of pasqua and the river there too. i love my 4 fishing lakes ;D soo close yet so far on a bike :-\

Corn is $8.00 or $7.50 or something for 50 lbs. from Masterfeeds on Park St. You can get field peas and lentils from the bulk terminals where they load the hopper cars. I know Rowatt and Pense, but I'm not sure where the closest terminal to you is. Bring pet food bags or grain sacks and ask permission first. Talk to your farm buddies at school and tell them you want some wheat or barley, soya beans, anything like that. Use 3 scoops of other stuff, one scoop of corn. That way one bag will last all year. Soak 24 hours, cook for one hour. Use the old coleman stove or something outside so your mom doesn't get a bad attitude about fishing.

Beauty fish Big Berk and saskcarp.
I tied into a large carp by accident last year fishing for pike in Echo. It made a number of runs each time almost spooling me. I finally had it close to shore when my barbless hook popped out and it was gone. They are great fighters since then I would like to get into another one.
Will try it again some time. :)

i know it aint secret but cause i was talking to some friends at fort qu'appelle and they told me the direction but they dont carp so its all good i might take the pic off but i got a good carp spot by my cabin to and its a 1-2km bike ride to get there i think its just over 2km but its a good workout while carrying at 50lbs of gear. i work on my grandpa's and uncles farm during the summer for the last 6 years and i know how and where to get any grain but i am goning to go to master feeds sometime soon because i was paying alot for corn at the super market.
