This should be fun...
Each year I get a publication that ranks the most popular freshwater gamefish in America. I have always wondered about their numbers and where they get them. So, let's see how MFF members compare to the published report.
Please pick the category that lists the species that you fish for the MOST!! I know that a lot of us like more than one and that the choice is difficult. Please be as honest with your vote as you can.
If you choose "Other", please reply to this post with the specific fish species that you had in mind.
After this has gone for a few weeks, I will put up the numbers that I have from this year and we will see if they are right or not!!! ;D

In my former life (when I lived in MN) this is the order of time spent for the particular species. Sometimes, like in winter I would be targeting Gills and Pike/Bass.

Now that I live in PA, I am going through an identity crisis. I need to start catching fish and then I will get more serious about which type of fish I really want to get after.

Jumbo Perch are by far the best eating fish!! But a river smallie can't be beat for a great fight!!

Well so far Bass and Crappies/Bluegills are tied for first place. Took the grandson fishing yesterday for the first time this spring. (6yrs. old,made for a good memory) His vote would be bluegills too.

with the crowded conditions on most ny tributarys i would think trout and salmon would be up near the top of the list :-\

Muskie ,Musky , tiger muskie . barred muskie ,clear muskie , spotted muskie and did I mention muskie ?
Every thing else is just bait .

Mike, you are 2 hours away from one of the best smallie rivers in the nation, the Susquehanna. That is where you need to be. And, you can hone your skills for catching then on the Delaware and other local streams which I hear are pretty darn good as well.

He's not kidding! I live right on the North branch of the Susquehanna. If you're not fishin' it, you are missing out! Try it you'll like it!

Salmon, salmon, salmon....trout are good too...but salmon ussually fisht better and are usually bigger. Plus, its easy to catch alot of big fish at once....oh and another thing....

Oh and believe it or not, I fish for salmon and trout more than burbot :P 8)

Bass, Bass Baby ;D ;D I spend more money and time than I can imagine each year on these fish. It's worth every penny!

I really enjoy catching browns and rainbows in my rivers. caught 26 today, 24 browns, 1 rainbow, 1 cutthroat ;D great day!!

a really hard decision because panfish are my choice for the winter, but trout are now that thing sopen up, but until this year since I moved to WNY I haven't targeted much besides bass. Haven't been exceptionally successful, but I will be!!! I voted for bass, but trout will probably be this year...

A hard choice for sure, I love them all! I consider myself a multi-species angler for sure. I figure why limit yourself to one species when there are so many cool fish to be caught. I voted muskie/pickerel because throughout the year I probably put in the most hours after the toothy critters but right now I'm after trout, trolling through May. Then I switch to live bait and go after walleye, hybrid striped bass, and anything else that bites. Then in the late summer and fall I get muskie fever. Once ice comes its pickerel, bass, and panfish on hard water until ice-out. Then I start trolling for pickerel until opening day of trout season and it starts all over again. It's all good! I like fishing for trout in small/medium size streams. Stream fishing is more exciting than fishing in a lake unless you have a boat. Also most of the streams I fish are not crowded by too many other fisherman/people so it makes fishing more enjoyable.

I'll fish for Pike or Bass occasionaly but 90% of my fishing is for Trout & Salmon..

I'm with Troutfishingbear on the Browns and Rainbows. You can't beat them with a flyrod. I occasionally plunk nightcrawlers in the reservoir to fill up the freezer with perch and walleye, but when it comes to sport, nothing beats a trout. My other favorite on a flyrod is Tarpon in FL.

I would say it would be probably salmon and trout. Bass are probably just as popular in America as trout and salmon.
My personal favorites are river trout and ice fishing lakers. But I love bass, walleye, pike, catfish, and panfish fishing. Carp can be a blast too.

Even though I gave up my favorite as Panfish for the survey, I have to side with whatever will bite my sorry presentation, using my favorite rusty hook . . .

My first love, River Smallmouth. When the river is up and dirty I'm into pan fish, or green bass.

i dont think i have a clear cut favorite ill fish for everything and when i go i go just to fish not for one certian species

Now that I look back on this, I am very surprised that walleye got such a high number. Maybe its because they taste so good, it sure can't be for how they fight.

TJ the walleye is at the top of my list as well but if a goldeye bites while I'm fishing for walleye I could really care less.

Well i have fished for Bass , Perch , Trout , Lake Trout , Landlocked Salmon , Bluegills , Sunfish and have caught my share hopefully i can fish more often and cross some more species off my list ...
would like to get a muskie, pike and walleye

Only been going after Largies and smallies the past 2 years, best so far has been a nice 6.4lbs. Hope to top that one this summer.

I mostly go for bass, but won't complain about anything that bites a hook.

If I'm catching fish it really doesn't matter, but If I had to choose right now? I'd pick big ol' trout. Then walleye, pike etc.

I fish for strictly Bass, during the summer, whether its a largemouth or smallmouth...

I love trout and salmon the most but also love fly fishing for bass. I have done some bass fly fishing on a few trips and although i had fun catching largemouth i think a 4 pound smallmouth would tow a 8 pound largemouth across a whole lake.

Trout/Salmon....most colorful and can be found in remote wilderness areas in completely natural settings

I deffinately have to go with Trout/salmon...They're a hard species to figure out, but once you get into them it makes all the hard work worth it... 8)

Steelhead hands down........and i prove their my favorite every november, december, january, february, march, and april when i often find myself on the stream breaking off shelf Ice before sun-up on a sunday morning when i oughtta be sleeping, but instead Im standing in sub zero temps, in the water no less, P.O.'ed that i just snapped a fish, rerigging a float, float stop, swivel, tippet, fly or bait and stacking 7 or 8 mini split shot.......with numb fingers.......throwing the float back in for another drift, watch my line bow completely downstream from a gust of wind that drags my float totally out of sync with the drift and also whips a plume of snow past my face and blows my hood off, and still dont go home cuz i just saw one porpoise lol!! Thats how i know my favorite fish to fish for are steelhead, no doubt.

Walleye are most sought after around here but trout come in close. Our panfishing and bass fishing is very sparse but I do travel to find them sometimes. Just kind of hard to justify a 150 mile trip to catch a perch or bluegill. However my goal this year is to catch 5 species of fish I have never caught before so I do see some traveling in my future!

Walleye,Crappie,LL Salmon in that order,but salmon are
moving up fast for there acrobatic fighting ability!
Just started fishing them 2 years ago.
This spring on my boat we are 14 for 23.
The biggest so far was a 4 pounder.
Oh yeah, Perch,Gills,N.P,Bass are on the list too.

I would say that growing up on a river with some hog smallies made it hard to resist. I guess its bass for me, but I almost could care less, as long as we are hooking them up. ;)
