Title: Jboggey’s Sandy Pond
Post by: jboggey on May 10, 2021, 06:45 PM
Yo Guys & Gals,

How have you all been since Ice season? Lost touch with most of my hard water buds. Still, I got out with a few of my buds at Kring’s for “ ice out “ and did some perch fishing at Eel Bay just off of Grindstone in the channel. Kept enough to put a few bags in the freezer.

Managed to get the Starcraft in the water @ Godfrey on Sunday. The tilt and trim rebuild did not arrive yet, but thankfully my old bud ,TommyBoy flew up from Virginia and spent a couple of days helping me manually lifting and lowering the motor and , oh yeh fishing too.

Oneida was kind and gave up 3 nice eaters between the 2 of us. Of course I was a gracious host and let TommyBoy catch 2 and I laid back and kept one.😋

Well , you ask, what does that have to do with Sandy Pond? Hold on, hold on , this is my short story and I’m getting to it. After all, you have to frame the picture correctly to get the Proper context.

This does all lead me back to the Pond. I mentioned I got the crippled Starcraft back in the water thanks to Tommy’s strong back. I also finally registered the Otter Stealth so I could place an electric trolling motor on it to cruise the Pond on less windy days. This early morning seemed to be such a day. Not knowing the durability of my fully charged battery , I asked TommyBoy if he wanted to make the long journey from my launch at Blind Creek out to the cut, just to check the status to see if it was still open or not. Reluctantly or not. TommyBoy set out on the quest, not knowing if the battery power was sufficient to get out and back.

Equipped only with my 3 year old back up battery from the Starcraft and my kayak paddle Tommy set out in seemingly calm water. This was about 8 am. I waited two hours for a call as I lost sight of him as the winds picked up and he disappeared around Carl Island.

Did I mention TommyBoy has been working out and is in great cardio condition? Good thing as the battery was fastly waning as he approached the cut. Tommy took a bunch of pictures and checked the depth of the cut and the north and south entry s into the cut from the Pond.

The channel running north into Green Point was extremely shallow. Tommy had to pole his way in . Keeping in mind the Stealth only draws 4 to 5 inches of water, while the South channel exhibited a narrow but 2 to 3 foot depth. The cut out into the lake was open but where he checked was an average of 3 foot depth.

A phone call from Tommy let me know he was ok , but with a much hardier cross wind it took him another hour to get back to the launch.

Keep in mind the water level is still 3 foot lower than average for this time of year. Not knowing what Mother Nature has in store for us, this could be an interesting summer. Thank you TommyBoy for the effort .

Yo Freddy

Thanks for the aerial pictures you posted on Iceshanty showing the cut. Could you post them on this topic page as well.

Dom , are you chasing them brookies my friend?

I am trying to take in all the information I can get effecting the dredging of the cut into the lake. Cathy at Green Point Marina is a store house of knowledge regarding the funding and environmental restrictions to maintain the cut into the lake.

Simplistically, as I am simple, I would encourage a dialogue of the issue or issues of maintaining access to the lake from the Pond on this topic page.

It was a sad spring not being able to fish the pond for crappies due to the water being so low.

Great pictures great fish. You are staying busy my friend. I spent a day Friday drifting on Chaumont trying to dangle worm harnesses and jigs in front of them eyes with no luck. Finally anchored up and brought home enough perch for Friday nite dinner .

I have a feeling Boggey knew the status of that battery, but was having revenge on me for out fishing him for yellow perch the previous day…he was angry I wouldn’t let him keep the six inchers to add to his count!
It was nice being around my good friend, when I wasn’t out fishing him, we played some cribbage, which I let him win of course. Had a fish fry, some apple pie from scratch, are a bunch of venison. I had a really good time, and will be back up this summer to put another session on!
Thanks for a great time Jim!

Yo Guys & Gals

The dredging of the cut will resume shortly according to Cathy at Green Point Marina. The start and stop was caused by a major part breakdown on the long neck excavator.

Part should be replaced , hopefully tomorrow or soon. Let’s hope they get a good cut done all the way out into the lake. 👍👍👍

Yo Guys & Gals,
Noticed Friday looking across the Pond from my camp the long neck excavator was still clawing away out there at the cut.

It hopefully will let some of those monster perch to come into the Pond. Looking forward to a few independent reports as I winterized the boat already.

That’s what you get for “reaching out to touch someone”. Some people are just too touchy. Just sayin.

Also Freddy thanks for tipping me off to your boat mechanic. I’m not going to mention his name on this site as he is already so swamped he doesn’t have time to go fishing himself. Great mechanic, great guy.  He works better if you bribe him with a bag of frozen perch fillets.👍 Thanks again

Yo Guys & Gals

Just got in from Iceshanty. Boy, was it a great ice fishing season on the Pond this year. The Starcraft is sitting up on blocks waiting for me to unwrap it, pump some grease in the buddy bearings and wait for that big chunk of ice to disappear before I launch on the Pond.

I will be making status reports on the dredging of the “cut” after I check with Cathy @ Green Point Marina. In the interim, I will be making my annual trek up to Goose today to check the Status of “Ice out” at Kring’s Point.

It would be easier just to call my old buddy Joefish and ask, but that would deny me the opportunity to bring the small poles to fish through the hard water from the municipal launch to truly close my ice fishing season out. I’ll get back to you on that this evening. Maybe get to cut a few holes with Joe.

Yo Guys & Gals

Well the trip up to Goose was not as anticipated. StellaDog and I got to TI bait store just in time to catch Joefish for a quick “howdy”, unfortunately , he put the short poles and ice.fishing equip up yesterday and we didn’t get a chance to cut any ice with him.

Further disappointment, StellaDog and I discovered there wasn’t much of a crowd when we got to Goose. In fact, we had it all to ourselves. After trekking out to midway we quickly found out why. The ice was good, over 10inches. We were marking lots of fish, unfortunately, small ones. I mean really small ones. So small that we weren’t hooking them, they were choking themselves trying to swallow the fat heads that were almost as big as they were. Seriously, after about an hour of choking dinks and giving them mouth to mouth resuscitation before we threw them back through the ice, we got winded, shortness of breath as it were and turned our efforts to reconnoitering the Kring’s Point open water situation as I had promised to do.

From our vantage point we saw 1 truck parked out at the very end of the Point and one fisherman fishing from their. The open water did not extend inland very far, certainly not back to the dock area or the boat ramp. Hence, no boats, canoes or kayaks in the small open water off the Point.

While there, the airboat came ripping across the ice and made a few futile runs along the iced edge to hasten the growth of the  open water area. Pretty much David verses Goliath as the ice is still in access of 8 inches most places.

Sorry to report, it ain’t “ice Out at Kring’s Point” yet. StellaDog and I are going to join Joefish now and put the short poles away and get our boats and long poles out. Gettin ready for “Ice Out”.

Boggey

Post Script: Nice you are back Rusty. Nice to hear from you Doug and Bart.

Thought I would give you an update on the channel “cut” access at the Pond . The dredging is ongoing at this writing and has been so for the last several weeks. The excavation with the longneck excavator according to Cathy Goodnough , President of the Sandy Pond  Channel Maintenance Association will continue right up to the annual appearance of the Sand Plover, at which time all excavations and activities will be terminated at the channel and beach area.

So you can imagine it is a daily race against time to achieve the required work prior to the arrival of the Plover or Plovers as “2” nesting pairs were witnessed last year.

A more detailed explanation of the ongoing channel maintenance can be viewed by accessing the SPCMA website, including pictures at:
www.spcma.homestead.com

The SPCMA also has a mailing address for those of us who use the access channel as well as Friends of the Pond who may want to make a monetary contribution to the ongoing excavation. For further information and contribution levels go to the website.

Great day Tuesday. Not necessarily on the Pond, but got to fish with my long time MFF contact Bluegillionafly. Long story short, we caught some nice yellow belly perch. Ran into Hinkydo in the process. Thought I’d send you a couple pretty pictures of them yellow bellies. Before and after.

Yo jperch

Yup, the pickerel were out, but luckily John was the only one they were interested in . He got 3 of them as I recall.

Before Bluegillionafly tells on me, I better fess up. We carefully loaded the boat, brought out 2 minnow buckets , minnow scoops , put on our life jackets. Checked to see if we brought out our snacks and water and when we got out to our fishing hole, John asks me “where are your fishing poles”,
Duh! I had left them in the back of my truck. Now we had carefully nestled Our way into the wolf pack ready to pounce on the unwary perch underneath the alumacraft.

The trip out from the launch had cost about 2 gallons of gas and about 20 minutes of careful navigation skills to arrive at the penultimate point of perch predation otherwise, we ain’t about to go back to the ramp to get my poles.

John, somewhat reluctantly, pulls out his brand new crappie combo which he has not yet used and places it gingerly in my hands. Keep in mind, this pole is about 15 foot long (exaggeration) with 10 eyes on it and set up for anything but fat yellow bellied perch. Super sensitive pole. Keep in mind, old Boggey is used to buying the Walmart $39.99 special (on sale) combo. In fact, I buy 2 of them in case one breaks. John hands me his newest pride and joy, probably a $200 fishing combo with the caveat “please use the net if you catch any big ones”.

Wow! Talk about pressure. Well after about 5 minutes of fast and furious fish catching almost all my concerns turned to trying to keep up with Bluegillion and listening to his tutorial and demonstration on fishing with a slip bobber.

Net net, Bluegillionafly and  I had a great day getting to know one another, swapping fish stories, weaving a couple yards of yarn in the process and forming a friendship I am sure will endure a lifetime.

Yo Bluegillionafly, can’t wait till next time my friend. I promise to put fishing poles on my check list.

Fished the Pond yesterday with another new old guy, Bill. He too was giving me lessons on using a slip bobber. He out fished me in my own hot spots, 3 to 1. We caught 20 total so you do the math. We didn’t get a lot for a mornings workout but kept some honest 10s and 11s.

Bill is from Henderson and we plan a lot of home and away friendly competitions. Round #1 goes to the old Navy guy. Stay tuned.

The perch were sparse, we had to go looking for them. They were all egged out and on there way out the cut. All for now.

Yo Guys & Gals

A real windy day on the Pond yesterday. My old friend, jperch came up for a visit. We decided to take the old Starcraft out on the Pond to see if there were any perch left in the basin. With the wind howling about us we just couldn’t hold bottom. Hard to tell if you are getting a bite much less catch a fish. Still we persevered and Pat, again with his sliding bobber managed 4 perch , while I, the ever polite host caught all the dinks so as not to bother him catching the keepers.😁

Sound like an excuse to you? Well anyway, we packed it in early and loaded the boat at Stanley and arrived back at camp only to find the house next to me had been sold to a family of ardent fishermen and fisherwomen. Upon introducing ourselves I was pleasantly surprised, one of the sons was indeed an Iceshanty acquaintance I had PMed many times in the past. Nykonsdream.

Back to the fishing narrative. Inviting jperch up to fishing for the day, and a perch dinner, I was astute enough to pull a small bag of perch from the freezer and place it in a pan of warm water . Luckily as the low or no catch condition I had invisioned proved prophetic.

Amazing how a bag of thawed perch and some baked curly frys can change a dreary day into a celebratory event. Add to that, I had the chance to introduce my old friend to my other passion, cribbage. Well Jperch proved to be a quick learner or I a good teacher. The later I would prefer as Jperch beat me first time out of the chute.
All in all not a bad day. Got to fish, however shortly, a perch dinner with an old fishing buddy, and met my newest neighbors, Nykonsdream and his family.

I slept well last night knowing while all is not well in this world, the Lord is watching over me and at least in my small corner has granted me good friends, good neighbors and peace.

In this Holy weekend when we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, let me wish you all Happy Easter, “He has risen”

Glad the channel “cut” dredging has been completed prior to the return of the birds. Rather than me regurgitating the results of the work completed to date, please go to the Facebook website for the Sandy Pond Channel Maintenance Association. SPCMA.

Yo Nykonsdream. What can I say? “Into each life a little rain must fall.” Sorry about the tick. Welcome to the neighborhood, ticks and all. Pesky and dangerous critters eh?

Can you believe, predicting snow tonight? Had to cover both boats. Raked leaves, had to serve as road commissioner for White Birches Drive, (patching pot holes). Private road not maintained by the town. All in a days work. All worth it in exchange for the BIG block party we are going to have in June eh?

Yo Dom,
Glad you asked that question my friend. I’ve takin a sabbatical from fishing and taking a refresher course on basic economics. I completed that course in record time and am now enrolled in the advanced Joe Biden’s econo301.

Much harder than I thought. First of all there are some tough prerequisites. As I mentioned , I had to take a refresher course and then the other prerequisite was you had to go through the school of (hard knocks) and the final prerequisite is you have to be over 75 years old. No problem so far eh?

In the offering for the course it said “ it would be helpful if your retirement funds had taken a beating, check. Your savings account was actually charging you money to “hold” your money for you, check. Your social security check has to be diminished by 13% of its previous purchasing power, check, and you have to pay twice as much for your gas and propane, check.

Next, you have to go out and get a full time job. You know something like the one you left 10 years ago, check. Now here is the best part. You have to keep track of all that “extra” money you are making. Cause after you make $19,000, the govment wants half of everything you make. I think Joe calls that “pay your fair share”, cause obviously I am rich now, check.

In closing Dom, I’m glad you asked “where’s Boggey “. So I could tie it into my fishin thread. You see , after an eight hour work day , an hour on the road to Syracuse , another hour back, old Boggey ain’t got a lot of fishin in him anymore. All in all things are looking up. My midterm mark for the advanced Joe Biden econo 301 is 100. My boss says I am eligible for the company 401 K plan if I work 5 more years. Praise the Lord for my good health.

Hope you are “keepin keeping on” too Dom.

Well Bogg, it saddens me that the system has let you down. I refuse to get political but want you to know that you sure deserve  more.  Too many in your boomer age group are experiencing the same. You’ve worked hard all your life and done all the right things and this is the return. Scares me to look forward sometimes, can I prepare enough for when my time comes? Keep your chin up and don’t over do it. I’ll find you sometime these first couple weeks in July and we’ll drown some worms. Thanks for Setting an example.

Right now I’m working as many hours as my back will allow which has been 48 to 52 hours a week.... :(

Sorry to vent on this post. I should be grateful the Lord has given me good enough health and mental awareness at 77 years of age to go back to work.

Many my age ,I am sure, do not have that option. Yesterday the glass was half empty. Today , it’s half full. It’s all in your perspective on life I guess. There is dignity in work.

Hello Jim...

...and it was surely good to hear from you last week..!

I finally found the time to log on and register on MFF.  Another Ice Shanty consumer of information (ArkAngel) that has made the summer conversion to MFF.

I LOVED (however sad but true) your "back to work" post and your ECONO 301 lessons.  Like Stu - I prefer to remain non political here - as much as I agree with your position(s) I've seen too many otherwise good relationship and friendships lost or diminished because of it.

No worries on the venting - you certainly have it coming.  And Jim...you are my hero..!  How many people would have stood in the gap and stepped up - and essentially changed the rules of the game..?  You didn't just sit there and let life happen to you - you changed the rules and turned the tables!  Bravo, my friend!

Why is it, Jim...that every time I think of you - I think of egg battered, crumb coated perch fillets and my mouth begins to water?  Pavlov's theory?

Annie and I are leaving for camp at the Pond Friday after work.  On Sunday we plan to fish the SLR in Cape Vincent around Carlton Island, weather and waves permitting...big water out there.
Then hook up with my brothers family on Wellesley Island for Fireworks...then Clayton for a few days...then back to camp for the remainder of the week of the 4th.

Anyone with perch/walleye info on that section of Cape Vincent - I'd love to hear from you.

And JBogg...?  Keep fighting the good fight.

Illegitimi non carborundum  ;)

Alter boys...?

Yo Guys & Gals
Well now, I almost went fishing today. The “almost “ part started in the early am when I checked my battery charger was hooked to the boat battery Saturday evening but I forgot to plug the charger into the outlet. Next , my passenger side tire was really soft from sitting in my yard for 5 weeks without any attention.

Hard to believe, it’s been 5 weeks since the Sea Nymph has felt the gentle caress of the water rushing along its hull. The early start I had envisioned went down the tubes. Left with the nightmare of waiting 10 deep to launch gave me second thoughts as well. I chucked it in and went to pick cherries to can some preserves instead.

Much as I feared, Old Boggey has to compete with all the other weekend warriors. Can’t wait till I reretire so I can get out during the weekdays again.

All that being said, work has not been that bad. My old boss welcomed me back with open arms and I can still make a difference and a contribution to the bottom line. So guys and gals . Next weekend, with proper planning, I will get up extra early. Batteries fully charged and tires fully inflated to fill the freezer with some perch and walleye.

Yo ArkAngel, you can’t throw me with that Latin. I took Latin one semester. Besides that , I got the internet too look it up. I thought you said you weren’t political👍 😁😁😁

How are you all doing? Just a quick catch you up on The new rejuvenated, back to work Jboggey.

Fishing has been scant. Getting reports from my buds and visually can confirm, water in the Pond is low. A lot of boaters are “poling” in and out of the cut.

Planned on getting out on the Pond this weekend. Stu called me Monday. He is helping some of his stranded neighbors getting back to their respective launch.

I’m thinking Henderson may be the better choice. Well all for now. Got to get back to work.😁😁😁👍

Yo Guys & Gals,

Wish I had something more positive to report to you all about the Pond this summer.
The water level has fallen drastically over the summer months. At mid summer most of us were unable to get through the cut with even shallow draft boats.

Now, the water is actually dropping more drastically on a daily basis. I assisted my neighbor remove his boat from the water yesterday. He keeps his boat on its own hoist on the south side of Blind Creek. He had to lower his boat to rest on the now waterless bottom of the  creek. He had to drag, lift and push his boat through the mud and dried up weeds to reach the waters edge.

He then walked his boat across the creek to the Stanley Boat launch channel where he had enough water to run his boat to the ramp.

The water was so low at the ramp, in his attempt to run his boat up on the trailer his prop struck bottom and obliterated the blades. I took some pictures around the waters edge. I
have heard some other scenarios of similar nature.

It will be interesting to see how the water fluctuations will effect the fish populations. All for now.

I did get out yesterday and blew some stink off. Found a big school of perch in Little Sodus, it was a good sign. Had to chase the cormorants of them because they were only 5-7 inches. Action caught over 100 kept 20 to filet and baked them up for dinner.

Yo Guys & Gals,
Haven’t had much time to get back to the Pond Topic. I’m sad, no ashamed I haven’t been back on the water now in over 3 months.

I went back to work don’t you know. Some good has come from it though. I was able to get a new metal roof on the camp on week ends. Bought a new , used car. Paid cash. Caught up on all my bills and sat enviously at the waters edge each evening watching my old buds dragging there boats through the weeds .

Well I guess I don’t miss that much, but I miss wetting the braided line and drowning my worms. The perch in the freezer is down to my last bag. I winterized the old StarCraft and haven’t had the heart to do the same to the Sea Nymph yet in hopes I will get a chance to “get out” one more time before the ice reclaims my fishing holes.

As I said, sorry I have been remiss in my tales of the Pond this summer. Suffice to say, the water is low, really low. The weeds are high and old Boggey is still a working man. Hope to catch up with you all on ice shanty.                                     Boggey out.

Great to hear from you!!!  I'm sorry (although not half as sorry as you are) that you've not been out to fish the Pond in over 3 months...but great new (I suppose) that your new metal roof will keep you and Anne warm and dry this coming winter.  It's always nice to get the bills paid up too :clapping:  Silver Linings.

My Anne and I have closed up our place at the Pond for the season...but looking forward to ice fishing as well.

FYI...I have acquired a used SNOWDOG for this coming season to pull all of my schtuff out on to the ice...they are quite the workhorse.

I like that I don't need a utility trailer - I like that there's no inspections, registrations or insurances...on trailers or SNOWDOG...so BONUS!

Let's catch up real soon, my friend - won't be too long and we'll be making ice again.

Yo Guys & Gals,

First time to quip on the affairs of state on the Pond this year (2023). Haven’t had much boat time since ice out, partly because the boat is still in dry dock, partly because none of my fishing chums have invited me out yet and lastly, just got me a total knee replacement. Taking me a lot of PT (pain & torcher) to get up to snuff.

Will have an update on water conditions. Status of the cut and arrival of the Sand Pipers after this week end. All for now. Drop a quick line or two if you get a chance. Got room on my private message board if you are shy.

Good to be back on the water again. The Sea Nymph is running well. The knee is healing, but of course not fast enough to suit me.
All my seasonal neighbors are coming back for the summer. Big turn over as well. Several new neighbors I am getting to know.

Water levels in the Pond and the lake are very high. Not 2017 or 2019 levels, but with our rainy season behind us, hopefully we can settle into a more normal year on the Pond. I pray it is so.

Yo Guys & Gals,

All is well on the Pond. Catching a lot more pickerel than last year. The perch are not schooling up and much harder to find. Them dang silver bass are also a nuisance. Have caught only one walleye keeper so far, as I said, pickerel are much more prevalent than last year.

Water levels are still high, but I’m not complaining. Boat ramp at Stanley easily accessible. Lots of parking available. Weekends are a little hectic. Easier to get in and out during the week.

Before I spread any disinformation. I would refer you all to the Sandy Pond Channel Maintenance Association web site. They are doing a wonderful job not only maintaining the “cut”, but keeping us all informed of the ongoing maintenance and great aerial pictures of the channel.

The SPCMA has a serious funding problem and a quick visit to their website will direct your contributions to help maintain the ongoing expenses associated with the upkeep of the Pond access. Additionally the aerial photos will give you a better iidea of how to navigate the cut to and from the lake. All for now. Hope to see you all out and about this summer.

Yo Guys & Gals,
Just a quick heads up regarding the next meeting of the Sandy Pond Channel Maintenance Assoc. (SPCMA).it has been announced an informational meeting will be held at the Sandy Pond Sportsman’s club on June 4th at 10 am. Great opportunity for all to familiarize one’s self with all the efforts being taken to maintain our navigational access to and fro from the lake.

Further, big uptake in Sandy Pond traffic. The general quiet of our neighbor hoods are to be warmly awakened by the return of old neighbors and in the case of our street , 5 new neighbors. Be sure to welcome the old neighbors and make the new neighbors feel welcome as well.

I have already given 2 of the new neighbors “The Tour de Pond”. Remember , to have a good neighbor, be a good neighbor.

Yo Guys & Gals,
It’s been pretty sparse perch pickings on the Pond so far this spring . Spent a couple full days out on the Pond this last week. Caught a lot of perch, just no size to them. We (my Annie )I should say hooked a nice 22” + walleye but old Boggey was a little slow getting the net on it and “we” 😩lost it. Catching pickerel and silver Bass, an occasional small mouth and  a blue gill or 2

All for now, Boggey

Yo Guys & Gals

Sorry for the lack of participation on the Sandy Pond thread. Fact is, nothing much has changed since my last post.

Grandkids have come up from New Orleans and Fort Meyers to fish with Poppy and thankfully got a lot of activity catching “dink” perch. To a 5 or 8 year old a perch of any size is still a perch.
Add to that I and my fishing friends have been catching some huge Bowfins on the Pond this year with a greater frequency than I have ever experienced in years past. So much so , I have attached a couple of pictures.

I will note, though I consider them a garbage fish, they sure are fun to catch. That scale in the picture is 24 inches and all the bowfins we have caught were in the 25 to 28 inch range.

As I said , the perch pickings have been slight on the Pond this summer. We have had a couple good outings on Henderson and made several trips up to the St Lawrence between Grindstone and Pitkin Islands to maintain our perch larder to date this summer.

My fishing Buds, TommyBoy and BigBuck are coming up from PA and Virginia next month and both , I am sure are ready to give me a few lessons on catching perch :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie:
:thumbup_smilie:
Till then this is Boggey struggling to find keepers on the Pond.

Sorry to drop out of sight for so long. Really not a lot to update. The Sea Nymph dropped a cylinder on me. Left me standing on the shore the last few weeks. A $1600 rebuild is not in the cards on a social security paycheck so I resurrected the old trusty Starcraft and got it back in running condition.

After transferring some of the electronics from the Sea Nymph, I am ready to recommition the Starcraft this week. My old fishing bud TommyBoy is making the trek up from Virginia to take some of our Perch back home.

Not to sure we can pull any out of the Pond (plentiful but small) but we may take a trip up to Clayton and fish some deeper water. With TommyBoy aboard, I am sure there will be many fish stories to tell on Monday. Stay tuned.

Next, not lastly, Old Boggey is going to tie the knot with my best gal,  Annie this Friday. Not to worry, she is an avid fisherwoman and sure to keep me more honest in my reporting.

Yo Guys & Gals,

Thanks one and all. Yup, she’s got the fishing part down Pat. The filleting is coming along . She cuts the belly bones but leaves the devistatingly fast filleting to the master.

TommyBoy showed up this afternoon and brought about 40#s of beer brats and sausage.
With special instructions to share with Stu & Jigger. I will take that under advisement only if they come over to play a game of cribbage.

Tommy and I plan to hit the Pond this weekend evenings to catch some walleyes. Chaumont latter next week in attempts to send him home with some perch.

Yo Guys & Gals,
Guess my days are numbered
In the boat for this season. I will be putting the boat to bed for the winter which brings about the eager anticipation of hard water fishing. I may get a couple more trips out. So with thoughts of fishing through the ice, dancing in my head, I am checking out my equipment and first on my list is getting the Nils cutting heads sharpened before the season starts. Yes I have 2 of them.
I will most likely be switching over to Iceshanty.com after this post , but felt it important enough to warn you to get your cutting heads sharpened in a timely manner prior to ice season.
For the last 6 seasons I have sent my cutting heads to Frank DeLuca,a master machinist who has refurbished my blades to a
“Like new” condition. Mr DeLuca’s address and Phone number is contained here-in:

Thank me later…….Boggey

Had mine done in April. At that point I was ready for a new season. Might need new batteries in my head lamp.

Yo Guys & Gals,
I am again in that state of limbo twixt fishing from the boat and cutting holes in the ice. Put the boat and trailer up on blocks, covered and winterized it.

Not having much luck shore fishing. A few feeble attempts have left me more prone to raking leaves and winterizing the camp in anticipation of winters onslaught.

While I can’t say the Pond was very productive this summer, I did manage several trips to Henderson , Chaumont, Oneida, Cayuga and Clayton fishing holes to keep the freezer full of perch.

As my large progeny, neighbors and old fishing buds depend on an occasional bag of perch it has been incumbent of me to travel further from the hearth than usual to keep the larder full.

Add to that, the Pond was not too hospital for perch fishing this summer with extremely low water conditions as is the case even now, entering the winter months. I’m curious how this will translate to our fish stock for the coming ice season.

I guess I will have to be content restocking the jigs, finding some of the newest and greatest fishing lures, getting the Polaris tuned and ready for the ice and maybe just maybe look  at a new two man shanty. Ah well, the cycle renews itself again with a few new wrinkles every year. The joy of seeing old fishing friends and making new ones looms with fresh anticipation.

It’s time to put this thread to bed for the winter. Hope you will all join me over on Iceshanty.

Glad to hear your still ticking Jboggey , I have been busy chasing and catching those tiger trout.
Don't know if you will see me on the ice this year.
God willing you catch a lot of perch on top of that hard water and be sure you have your Jesus shoes and stay on top.

Yo Guys & Gals,

Getting back to the Sandy Pond thread again after a shortened ice fishing season on the Pond. The Old Starcraft is waiting it’s turn at my boat mechanic before I can hit the open water.

That’s the problem with old things (boats and people) we need a little more maintenance and attention as we age. Hopefully, the Old Starcraft will stay tuned up for the whole summer this season.

My new knee isn’t the miracle I was expecting . Still, it’s no worse than before the replacement. Through the miracles of modern medicine and seven different pills in my pill box, the good Lord has granted me reasonable mobility to once again match wits with the dumb and not so dumb fish.

All that being said, I’ve managed a couple trips out to the locks and docks to do some shore fishing with varied results. I even managed to hitchhike a trip with my bud Dallas to fish in his boat on Cayuga. We did well.

Lastly, I borrowed my neighbors canoe out on the Pond the last two days and managed mixed results. Day one I kept 18 respectable perch. Day two, I was beset with those pesky pickerel. Caught more pickerel than perch. Also discovered muscles in my shoulder and neck I had not used in many moons.😵‍💫

All in all not a bad transition from ice to open water. Looking to do a little more hitchhiking with my old buds till the Starcraft is proven worthy.

The water level is extremely low on the Pond. The dredging crew is working daily to enhance the cut and the channels to get to the cut.

Post Script: Take a look at the weather forecast for the next 10 days. Looks like a return to winter. Brrrrrr

Yo Rusty,
I’m sure we will be bumping into one another. I can always hear your voice on the water. Surely that is where the hot bite will be . You might want to wait a week before coming up. Cold and windy weather forecast.

I will trade you some of our "high" water for some of your "low". We had "skim" ice yesterday morning, and it looks like about 10" of snow this morning, I haven't been out to move it yet.
Glad you are getting some early boat time in and catching some fish. Pretty sure the Lund will set in the garage until the end of April.....h2l

Yo Doug,

Nice to hear from you my friend. Hopefully, this is the year I finally get to fish with you on the Great Sacandaga. Again I am having boat motor problems, but hope to acquire a new (used) motor for the Starcraft soon. Can’t believe the price of used motors.

Anyway, haven’t let that get in my way of fishing. I am lucky enough to have some great fishing buddies who allow me to hitch a ride and sit second chair. Fortunately I still have enough muscle to drag the canoe out on the Pond as well and scout the new honey holes with my (one man power) kayak paddle.

Got out twice this week and managed to bring a couple of meals back to camp. The perch were all egged out. Caught 3 too many pickerel as well.

Thanks to my buds Hackett and Dallas for sharing their boats on Eel Bay. I got a ton of people looking to find me a reasonably priced motor for the Starcraft and should be back on the water soon. Meantime thanks to old fishing buds.

Hope to see my old friends and meet a few new ones this summer out on the Pond.
