First night I went out this year. Got a few, back is shot, hopefully be able to go out tonight. Also hit the stream and got a couple giant oak leaf grubs yesterday. I was surprised how big they were. Really would like a bunch more of them.

Have you ever put red cellophane over the lens of you flashlight to reduce the likelihood of them getting spooked and going underground? I never have, but always wanted to try it.
-
Definitely harder worming as you get older as far as light I now use headlamp instead of flashing far easier and most have a red light on them I am at 1500 feet no holes here yet

As greenside said!!
Get a headlamp and use the red lense...
You'll be amazed on how the crawlers dont scurry away as fast
-
Assuming most people get them on lawns has anyone ever looked in the woods for crawlers
-
turn over leaves and where there is dampness there usually are worms!Oak leaves best!
-
I don't play tug of war anymore. I just walk the streets at night and scoop them up with a credit card. Use the brightest light you got.
-
I tried a red lamp last night. there weren't a lot of worms out as my area was dry with a slight breeze but the ones that were out did not like that red lamp at all . They were gone as fast as with a plain bright light. Tonite will be better, I'll load up tonite.

Went to the park at 5:30 this morning and picked up a good pound in about 20 minutes. Just walked the road and parking lot.
I don’t chase them around in the lawn any more. Use my chef’s tongs to pick them up.
-
I was thinking a small cordless shop vacuum might do the trick! ;)
-
We usually buy ares but when I do pick them I wear rain pants and crawl ,back can't take bending over slot any more
-
When hunting on dirt you must move slow. As soon as you see one keep only the edge of the light on them. If you put them in the center of a bright light it doesn't matter what color it is. I probably got 300-400 last night without much effort and if I was younger I'd have 1000. If we get a good rain tonight and it stayed warmer it would be really easy. Just scoop them up with a credit card and put in a coffee can. Put a sheet of paper or cardboard on the top of the worm bedding and dump them on it. Any that are dead will be on the cardboard and be easy to discard and the live ones will borrow in. Only way I'd ever try getting them in dirt is with the electric rods but for obvious reasons I don't recommend most people do that.

4x4 piece of 1/4 inch chicken wire staked down or make a frame for it and set it out on your lawn or wherever you go for them let it sit for a bit and then go pick it up. You'll have nightcrawlers without straining your spine.

Why does this work? I don’t get it?
-
The nightcrawlers crawl up through the holes and when you pick it up they're stuck on top of it. And then you can get them some will escape but the majority won't.
-
Oh I get it now, I just read chicken wire and thought of the big octagon holes. Was thinking no way they don’t just scoot back down off of it…LOL
-
I shldve put (holes) after the 1/4 inch LoL 😂 it works though 👍🏻

I know what you mean
-
x2! I can't stand up straight for 15 minutes after picking.
-
I rember the first time I got a good haul as a kid. Left them in bedding on the porch and the afternoon sun nuked them. Can never forget the smell of some melty crawlers.

I just found a couple of containers of those in one of my fishing bags from last fall. Didn't dare open them!

that's how i pick up crickets and grasshoppers
-
Yea and when I don't feel like putting rain pants on and crawling on ground b( which is most of time) we by them at a place near harbor in buffalo , I pay about 4$ for 18 it's a good tradeoff for 12 Erie eyes most of time ,and when available there's a kid in my town that sells them and when he has them I'll buy 100 from him and keep in a cooler in bedding in our fridge to use during summer
-
About the last thing in the world world you need to be doing right now is crawling around on the ground chasing worms.
Hire that kid Ben! You want the worms and he can probably use the cash.
Or just let me know and I’ll put up a tote full for you when it rains this week.
-
i personally have been experimenting on a new concept for getting worms ......trained robins! that's right, robins .in China trained cormorants are used to catch fish in rivers. so i got thinking why not trained robins to catch worms ....so far it has worked well accept they often eat the worm and fly away ....i will keep working on it and get back to you all with future reports
-
O it will be a long time before I crawl for worms ! I'll just support the kid or local bait shop
Just leaving Rochester now had another MRI ,going home to eat then probably visit sister ,gotta stay off that couch And move ,!. but taking it slow, thanks for offer bob!

Question for you worm pickers…all the worms I see on my driveway are really small. Very rarely do I see one bigger than a trout worm.
Are you guys finding night crawler sized worms on pavement?
-
Finally my yard has lots of holes open from last night I will be out there tonight

Sure do! The park entrance road and parking lot were littered with them the other morning.
-
Hmmm…I have nightcrawlers in my yard, lots of them. I guess they are happy where they are in the grass and aren’t looking to travel…
-
During the middle of night I get tons of crawlers on the pavement. By morning they mostly disappear leaving the red worms behind. After sun up I look for parking lots with curbs that they can't climb back into the grass. Corners with leaves are hot spots. I don't do it to save cash. I just do it cause I've been doing it since the 1900's and just don't know any better.
-
I'm gonna have to try that. My back is getting too old to bend over for hours.

Well since your 122 years old, I’m not sure your back will make it much longer either way…. :P
-
Most of the park I go to ( a mile away) is soccer fields. Light rain brings up the little ones. A good soaker brings out the big ones.
I only keep them till the end of May or so. Beyond that I’m either carp fishing or have the fly rod in hand.
-
I used to live by Vassar college they had a farm garden area people rented spots that place was incredible for crawlers

Who would have thought a thread on worms would go 4 pages?
My mother is from a city in Germany by the name of Worms. No kidding! It's where Martin Luther was from. Anyway, do you know how many kids got a charge out of that in grade school when we sharing where our parents were from? "My mother is from a city by the name of Worms."
When my mother first came to the states she was a little confused when she saw signs that said, "worms for sale."

Lots of worm info to be shared. Anyone ever catch and use the Asian jumping worms in the fall?
-
Back home in ditches county late summer along the Wappingers creek we would get massive wiglers almost as large as crawlers
